Taken by Will Cook (except for the miscellaneous section). Most of these were digiscoped using a Nikon CoolPix 995 through a Kowa TSN-824 spotting scope with 20-60x zoom. All shots were hand held until I built a simple but effective adapter out of a spice jar lid in January 2004. Some recent shots (April 2005- ) are taken with a Nikon CoolPix 8800, which has a 10x zoom but cannot be used for digiscoping - the lens diameter is too great. I got a 1.7x teleconverter to use it effectively for bird photography. Bird ID books Plants for attracting birds Birds of Panama Bird links ... Welcome to the website of the Iowa Ornithologists' Union. Our state is a land of many surprises. Sure, there are endless fields of corn and soybeans, but tucked away in the gently sloping valleys one finds streams and rivers, lakes and ponds, and hardwood timber that all provide homes to a host of different species. Dickcissel, Sedge Wren, Smith's Longspur, and even Eurasian Tree Sparrow may be found within our borders. Wander through this website and discover for yourself the wonders of our state. © David J. L'Hoste Northern Parula Warbler Parula pitiayumi The Northern Parula Warbler is an extremely abundant summer resident throughout the hardwood forests of the state, except in the northwest corner, where it is only fairly common. It nest even on the narrow oak-lined chenieres adjacent to the Gulf. Its weak, lisping trill that “kicks up” on the end can be heard wherever there are large trees, from early March until late summer, when the song period of nearly all birds terminates. The Northern Parula is not only one of the first migrants to arrive, reaching southern Louisiana in late February or the first days of March, but it is also one of the last to complete its exodus in fall. Although an occasional individual winters in the southern part of the state, this is the exception rather than the rule, for most Northern Parulas are gone by the first part of November.

    • Notes on the occurance of selected species in NM:
    • Records of migrant solitarius vireos by number of birds or number of reports in NM through 2000.
    • Colonization timeline for Eurasian Collared Doves in NM through Summer, 2003.
    • Thick-billed Parrot at Engle, NM, in mid May, 2003 The bird was seen by several hundred birders from across the U.S. Also shown is a pine cone that had been dismantled by the parrot. If accepted, this would be a first NM (and U.S.) record since 1938. A primary feather of the bird was obtained and, to assist the NMBRC in it's deliberations, is undergoing isotope analysis to determine what the bird was eating (commercial versus natural), what kind of water it was drinking (rain water versus processed/bottled water), and an approximate location of where the bird was located when the feather was formed.
