Birding Adventures: Reflections in an OL' COOT'S EYE
July 12-13-14, 2003 - Ensley Bottoms, Shelby Co. TN
On Sunday morning at the Maxson Waste Water Treatment Plant, I was enjoying the tremendous influx of south bound shorebirds. It was the first big push of the season and had swelled the population of "Wind Birds" to over 2,000 and the species total to 15.
I noticed they had started to pump waste water into a pool that is usually kept dry. I knew that one of the many Black-necked Stilt pairs had a nest on this flat and I went by to check it out. This is a large pool and the water had just started into the end far from the nest so no water had reached it at that point. The nest was typical of the nests built on dry surfaces and was nothing more than a few pieces of debris with the eggs laying at ground level. The following photos document the Life Drama that unfolded. The photo on the left shows the nest on Saturday around noon. In the photo on the right, taken Sunday at noon, the water had reached the nest. The two adults had already brought the nest up

Dave is a struggling restaurateur whose establishment, The Auk , is perched on the lonely and stark cliffs of the coast of Newfoundland. The Auk Dave has a good, albeit very The Auk . His scheme involves a sighting of the titular rare bird, the The story plays out from here, with the introduction of some subplots involving cocaine, a romance and a ground breaking technological discovery. Director Stulla Gunnarson and screenwriter (and writer of the novel upon which the film is based) Edward Riche serve up a movie that is rather cute, in a quirky sort of way. Dave is truly a schmuck. Awkward, dumpy and generally rather dim. He is something of an idiot savant, a brilliant chef who is otherwise pretty much a complete dork. Alphonse is squirrelly and intermittently funny, with manic energy and paranoia to burn. The eventual love interest, Alice (Molly Parker) is cute and likable.

New Brunswick Bird Records Committee
Nouveau-Brunswick
Associated with the New Brunswick Museum The New Brunswick Bird Records Committee was formed to ensure that adequate information is preserved about unusual occurrences of birds in New Brunswick, to provide a process for formal acceptance of bird species to the provincial list , and generally to advance knowledge of birds in New Brunswick. The committee consists of five voting members , who are experienced birders, and a representative of the New Brunswick Museum, the repository for the bird documentation. To assist in preserving the details of unusual bird occurrences, the committee supplies a documentation form (available in both English and French versions) but its use is not mandatory. All written accounts, photos and other evidence will be welcomed. The committee conducts formal votes on the acceptance of the first ten records of a species in New Brunswick. For voting to be held, each such record must be supported by at least two independent written submissions or by tangible evidence, such as a photo or tape recording. Although the committee will be examining in detail only the first ten provincial records of a species, it is also valuable to fill out a documentation form for other records that are also considered very unusual the seventh provincial record, the second breeding record, the first record for the upper St. John valley, the first record in 25 years, etc.

Home Yard List Lake Seminole Birds More Katrina Birds ... Georgia Birds of 2004 I finally got a camera the other day and thought I might post some of the birds I've found recently. The inexpensive camera definitely has serious limitations, but a few shots seem to turn out ok. I have found ducks to be the easiest to photograph and most everything else has been almost impossible, so far. I have used a video camera in the past and have been able to document a handful of rarities with it. Most rare birds though are difficult to find, photograph, and relocate unless you're birding in an area that has many birdwatchers. Many of which know each other, know the area, know the secret spots of that area, etc. I assume the day is coming soon when technology will allow birdwatchers to finally be able to capture on film what they see with their binoculars. Until then, the beautiful curves of a bird will continue to be reduced to a grainy, pixelated blob. Eric Beohm Nov, 2003

Vermont Bird Records Committee Home Committee Members Reporting Rare Sightings VBRC Published Reports ... RSDs (committee only) Welcome to our website!
The Vermont Bird Records Committee is composed of expert birders and ornithologists from Vermont as well as the four seasonal New England editors of North American Birds. The primary purpose is to validate records of birds from the state of Vermont and maintain the Vermont state checklist. Bird records typically originate as written descriptions and/or photographs that are submitted by observers involved with the discovery of a rare bird, rare nesting species, or out-of-season reports. The committee actively solicits reports of any species on the review list as well as any species not currently on the official Vermont state checklist. Each year, the committee publishes an annual report detailing the decisions on all species reviewed during that year.
Nests contain valuable information! If you visited the same nest more than once, please take the time to also fill out a nest record form The last meeting of the Committee was on November 6, 2004. The next meeting is scheduled for November 5, 2005 at VINS Bradgon Preserve in Woodstock.

Mice threat to rare birds LONDON: Supersize mice which are eating chicks alive are threatening the world's most important seabird colony, on the U.K. overseas territory of Gough Island in the South Atlantic. An estimated 700,000 mice working in teams attack defenceless albatross chicks 300 times their size, gnawing away at them from below until they die of wounds. About a million petrel, shearwater and albatross chicks are thought to have been killed this year by a breed of mouse much smaller than the birds it devours. Gough Island is part of the Tristan da Cunha group of islands and a world heritage site with a population of 10 million birds. The mice are believed to have arrived on the boats of whalers or pirates and learned their carnivorous behaviour. - Guardian Newspapers Limited 2005 Printer friendly page

95. New Jersey Bird Records Committee
Evaluates and maintains records of rare birds. State list, review list, photo gallery, and report form.
http://www.princeton.edu/~llarson/njrc.html
New Jersey Bird Records Committee
Welcome!
The New Jersey Bird Records Committee collects records of rare birds reported in the state of New Jersey, and maintains a State List of all species seen in the state. In this context, "rare" means a species which has never appeared in the state before, or has appeared only a few times. Typically, such a bird is not in its normal range or habitat and is not present for a long period. In this usage "rare" doesn't mean endangered species with a wide continental range, or threatened breeding birds. Such species are not monitored by this committee, and should be reported to appropriate governmental or conservation organizations. The goals of the Committee are summarized in an article written by Richard Crossley.
What to report:
Please report only species on the New Jersey Review List or species new to the state; see the New Jersey State List for species which have occurred in the state. Please DO NOT report Federal or State "Threatened and Endangered List" species to the Committee unless they are also shown on the Review List. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/ensphome.htm

The worst part about school is school itself.
After achieving my mastery of one art, I began to pursue another, the library sciences. Actually the last semester of my history degree overlapped with the first semester of my Library Science degree. This is a fact that seems to impress people. I think of it more as a display of my own severe lack of planning skills, but I've always possessed a somewhat pessimistic bent.
Library school is quite a mixed bag. Actually, bag would not be the word I'd choose. Perhaps 'can' is more appropriate than bag really, as in can of mixed nuts.
If one thinks about the sort of people that are attracted to libraries, the diversity is staggering. From the most ardent and studious of scholars who yearn to preserve the wisdom of the ages, to people who long to bring the simple joy of the written word to children, librarianship is a noble tradition that cuts across every segment and strata of intellect.
We also attract, as my Uncle James used to say, some rare birds.
