164. Loving Light Amazon Lodge
Located near Iquitos, Peru, is the newest, most exciting Amazon vacation destination. Stay at the lodge or join in guided expeditions to see the beauty of the Amazon rainforests.

Welcome to the Loving Light Amazon Lodge! Opened in 1998, it is one of the newest and most spacious lodges within the Peruvian rainforest. The Loving Light Amazon Lodge offers spectacular, untamed jungle which you can freely explore under the guidance of our multilingual naturalist escorts. Located on the Yanayacu River, a tributary of the upper Amazon River, approximately 100 kilometers southwest of the town of Iquitos (1000 kilometers northeast of Lima), the Loving Light Amazon Lodge is a perfect blend between total wilderness experience and personal safety and comfort.
The last human settlement on the upper Yanayacu River, Loving Light Amazon Lodge is surrounded by an exotic jungle alive with monkeys, tapir, boars, iguana, fish, alligators, and birds of every imaginable color and song. After a day of exploration, you can retire to your private thatched-roof hut with comfortable beds, shower, flush toilet, basin, and kerosene lighting. There is no electricity, only the glow of the moon, stars, and fireflies which seemingly pulsate to the music of the jungle night life. And in the morning you awaken to the beautiful chorus of a thousands birds, each singing their own unique song. If you've never meditated before, these birds will take you there.
Mosquito netting surrounds all structures including private huts, welcome bar, dining room, kitchen, hammock room, and the shaman ceremony cottage so as to provide you with pest-free relaxation. Some of the lodge activities include fishing (piranha, tuna, bass, catfish), jungle trekking, canoeing, down river village exploration, bird watching, alligator gazing, shaman ceremonies, ethnobotany, and swimming with the pink river dolphins.

    Magical Rainforests
Wild Places Wildlife in Tropical Forests
For biologists, tropical rainforests are some of the richest, most exciting areas on earth! They are home to gigantic trees, colourful birds, millions of brightly hued insects, and a variety of fascinating mammals. There are three main regions of tropical rainforest: in Central and South America, in West and Central Africa, and in Southeast Asia. The Amazon Basin forest is the largest, covering six million sq.km.
Although rainforests are such important centres of biodiversity, they cover only about 6% of the earth's land surface, less than half the area they covered not so very long ago.

Rainforests are the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, as well as being the home to an estimated 50 million indigenous forest people.
However, millions of hectares of these forests are being destroyed every year.
As a result, rainforest people are being displaced, their rights abused and their cultures lost forever.
It is believed that thousands of species of wildlife could become extinct as a result of the destruction. Amongst the species that are disappearing are those that could potentially be of great benefit to humanity, such as in the discovery of new medicines.
The destruction of rainforests is also one of major contributors to global climate change, as many rainforests are burned, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Rainforest clearance can also disrupt local weather patterns, as well as increasing soil erosion, floods and droughts.

    Rainforest Field Trip
Trailhead Teacher's Resources Start Field Trip Rainforests have been around for millions of years, and yet in the very brief span of half a century, mankind has destoyed a huge portion of the world's rainforests. On a daily basis, acres and acres more disappear. This field trip takes a look at what a rainforest is and why it is an important ecosystem, the animals and peoples of the rainforest, what types of rainforests there are, and provides some ideas that students can do to actively participate in protecting the remaining rainforests. Objectives
  • Students will learn about what defines a rainforest. Students will learn about the environmental impact of eliminating rainforests. Students will learn about what animals live in the rainforest. Students will learn about the Inidigenous people of the rainforest.
  • Concepts
    • What makes a rainforest a rainforest?

    175. Tropical Rain Forests

OVERALL OBJECTIVES Students will understand that: a) Knowledge Objectives (MU = Main understanding)
  • Climate has a dramatic effect on people's lives. Tropical rainforests are biologically diverse. Economic progress may lead to environmental destruction. Vegetation is affected by location. Deforestation impacts globally. Wildlife is diverse in the rainforest from different regions of the world. Changes in one part of the environment results in changes in another part of the environment. Deforestation has parallels in our local environment.
  • b) Skills Objectives (S = skill)
  • The importance of cooperative group work.
  • c) Values Objectives (V = values)
  • To what extent should we exploit our natural resources? Which is the best approach in co-operating with people on a global scale? What is the best way to manage wildlife in the rainforest?
  • Objectives Procedures Introduction
  • Write the word 'rainforest' on the board. Ask students what they know about rainforests?

LAST UPDATE: 01-Sep-2004 Western Cameroon - During the Ice Age, forests that could not survive the drought elsewhere in Africa found refuge in this rugged mountainous region. Now the rich forests of western Cameroon harbor an extraordinary 4,000 species in 10,000 square kilometers, a legacy of that Ice Age refuge. But in the past century, village agriculture and encroaching plantations have eliminated most of these luxuriant forests, leaving only islands of biodiversity at higher elevations. To better manage the remaining forest refuges, local conservation projects need data on plant diversity and the distribution of endangered plants. Drs. Martin Cheek

    The 'Wet Tropics'
    North-eastern Australia is very diverse because it is jam packed full of very close, but very different, ecosystems and their smaller vegetation communities; coral reefs, sea grass communities, mangroves, beaches, rocky shores, wet schlerophyll forest, tropical open forests and woodlands. The terrestrial part of north-eastern Queensland is known as the 'Wet Tropics', with one of Australia's most beautiful towns, Cairns, at it's centre. The 'Wet Tropics' has, as the name suggests, Australia's highest rainfall and thus supports the continent's main tropical rainforest. At 0.1% of the countries' land mass, however, tropical rainforest covers only a tiny area in the driest inhabited continent on the planet. But for it's small size the 'Wet Tropics' contains a ridiculously large proportion of Australia's biodiversity within in it's boundaries. For example, it has;
