Now the rich forests of western Cameroon harbor an extraordinary 4,000 species in 10,000 square kilometers, a legacy of that Ice Age refuge. But in the past century, village agriculture and encroaching plantations have eliminated most of these luxuriant forests, leaving only islands of biodiversity at higher elevations.
