Australia's Tropical Rainforests Australia’s Tropical Rainforests cover approximately 900,000 square hectares and are internationally recognised as being one of the most ecologically fascinating natural areas in the world. These forests contain an amazing array and diversity of flora and fauna. Stretching for over 500 kilometres along Tropical North Queensland’s coastline, these rainforests are the oldest continually surviving rainforests on earth and once covered the entire Australian continent. Over millions of years, as the climate and geography changed, the Australian rainforests receded to a small band between the coast and and the Great Dividing Range, and stretching from Cooktown in the north to Townsville in the south. Today these rainforests represent less than one thousandth of the country’s total land mass. Despite their relatively small size, the rainforests are home to an amazing diversity of life and provide a living record of the ecological and evolutionary processes which have shaped Australia’s plants and animals for over 415 million years. To protect these rainforests, and to ensure that they are preserved for future generations, they were placed on the

sland Bike Hikes was founded in 1998 by Bryan Devaux, a native St. Lucian, whose family has lived on the island for over 250 years. Bryan saw a need to provide guests with an active tour getting them out of their hotels and showing them what St. Lucia has to offer.
"Our trails are not man-made and we're not the next best thing to Disney but if you want to see St. Lucia in its raw form we can give you that. The most appealing thing about our tours is that they are real." The Rainforest Cycling Adventure gives you a unique look at St. Lucia's rural and rugged heart. You will learn about our fruits, our trees and see the island's most beautiful waterfall. Unlike the busy roads in the north of the island, you are unlikely to see any traffic here, just miles and miles of unspoiled scenery. The Soufriere 2 in 1 Tour takes you past the majestic pitons to the town of Soufriere by powerboat, you'll see the volcano, The Botanical Gardens, a working estate and cycle the Soufriere area. On the return trip we will stop for snorkeling in Anse Cochon. The 2 in 1 tour is action packed and economical with three of the island's best tours rolled into one.

A Closer Look at Rainforests
Rainforest is a type of tropical forest that is dominated by closely spaced trees forming an unbroken canopy. It is one of the most widespread and important types of forest in the world.
Where the world's rainforests occur
Rainforest occurs in the moist tropics and cooler temperate, high rainfall zones. The three main geographic areas of tropical rainforest are:
  • the Amazon basin and adjacent areas of south and central America west Africa southeast Asia and the islands extending to New Guinea.
Temperate rainforest occurs high on some tropical mountains, in southern South America, New Zealand, south eastern Australia and parts of South Africa. In eastern Australia temperate and tropical rainforest merge together and sometimes can be found growing as distinct communities on different soil types close to each other, for example in the Dorrigo area of northern New South Wales. Basalt soils in this area support a form of tropical rainforest and shale soils support a temperate rainforest dominated by coachwood.

Bill Gates, Buy the Rainforests
View Current Signatures Sign the Petition To: Bill Gates, Microsoft Mr. Gates,
We admire your philanthropy and all that you have done for the world so far. We would like to invite you to make the ultimate move to save the world: buy all of the rainforests to preserve them for our descendants, and so that we may continue to breathe for years to come.
The rainforests of the world are disappearing at an alarming rate. If deforestation continues at its present rate, South America will be a desert by the 2040's. However, you can save us. You can buy the rainforests and turn them into protected land, full of happy monkeys, rainbow-colored parrots, and majestic trees filling our air with clean, pure oxygen.
We estimate that, according to the figures on the Rainforest Action Network's website (http://www.ran.org) that you could buy all of the rainforests in Bolivia, Brazil, Central America, Colombia, Congo, Ecuador, Indonesia, Cote D'Ivoire, Laos, Madagascar, Mexico, Nigeria, the Philippines, and Thailand for $28,891,561,120, assuming an average price of $40 per acre. If that is too much money, you could opt to save the rainforests in South America only, or you could ask your friends to help out.
Thank you for taking the time to consider our plea.

rainforests are forests which grow in areas of high rainfall. Tropical rainforests are found between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
http://www.yptenc.org.uk/docs/factsheets/env_facts/rainforest.html
Rainforest Rainforests are forests which grow in areas of high rainfall. Tropical rainforests are found between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. There are other, temperate rainforests in areas such as the northwest Pacific coast of America. These are much cooler, but experience very high rainfall. Before humans started destroying the rainforests, they covered 15% of the Earth's land area. Today, they cover less than 7% ( See map, right for worldwide distribution of rainforests). In the last 200 years, the total area of rainforest has decreased from 7.1 billion acres to less than 3.5 billion acres. (1) More than 30 million acres of tropical forest are destroyed each year, which means at current rates of destruction there will be no rainforest at all in just 40 years. (2) The disappearance of the forest is called DEFORESTATION. As populations have grown and demands for land and timber have grown greater, so the deforestation has accelerated.

The Mountain Caribou Project
Mountain Caribou are the most endangered large mammal in North America. Photo: J.D. Taylor The Mountain Caribou Project is a new collaborative effort of Canadian and US conservation organizations to reverse the steep decline of mountain caribou and protect their globally unique habitat. Mountain caribou are the most endangered large mammal in North America. Since 1997 their numbers have shrunk by a third, a disturbingly swift decline, reflecting the continuing fragmentation of their habitat by logging, roadbuilding and other human impacts. Fewer than 1700 animals remain in the world.
