Spirits of the Rainforest

Use our free online Teaching Tools to create custom worksheets, puzzles and quizzes on this topic!
Students will understand the following: Scientists are conducting experiments to verify the powers attached to herbs and other plants by native peoples. A reader must evaluate the accuracy and biases of all so-called scientific studies, especially those reported only on the Web. Materials For this lesson, you will need: Access to the Internet Procedures Discuss with students how they would go about using the Internet to find material about new or potential uses of plants as medicines. Where would they begin? By going straight to Web sites hosted by pharmaceutical companies? By doing keyword searches? You may have students proceed to follow their own instincts to locate sites and articles. Or to save time and focus students on the same sources, you may want to refer groups of students to the following three sites screened for this project:

rainforest tro pical rainforest
Tropical rainforests cover less than 6% of the land on our globe, but house more than half of our world's plant and animal species, and contain 80% of the Earth's land vegetation. It took up to 100 million years for the tropical rainforests to evolve. It has taken only forty years to destroy more than half of them. Every second, a football field sized chunk of lush tropical rainforest is gone forever. Every year, we lose another 20 million acres. Tropical rainforests once covered 14% of the land on our globe. But because of pressure from industry, consumerism, and greed, tropical rainforests now cover less then 6% of the Earth's land. Destroying the rest of our rainforests could be one of the most tragic mistakes in the history of human existence. In every acre of rainforest that's destroyed, huge numbers of plants and animals die too. Any one of them could be the last of its kind. In the last hundred years, our forest practices have caused up to a million species of animals and plants to be extinguished forever. While the extinction of some species is a natural occurrence, it is now happening 10,000 times faster than it did before the appearance of human beings. Steer Clear of Rainforest Beef
Rainforests are often cut down or burned so that cattle can be brought in to graze. As they chew up the grass that tries to grow on the deforested land, their hooves stomp on and wipe out the last of the vegetation. Soon the land is no longer suitable even for grazing cattle. Then the ranchers move further into the rainforest, cut down more trees, and the stomping and chewing starts all over again. This is the process that has already destroyed much of the rainforests in Latin America. In 1960, 130,000 square miles of these thriving forests covered Central America. Today, less than half of that remains.

126. Bryomonitor - A Biomonitoring Program For Neotropical Rainforests
Information about, and software for, a computer program for biomonitoring disturbance and regeneration of neotropical rainforests using bryophytes as indicators.
http://www.drehwald.info/bryomon1.htm
BRYOMONITOR is a computer program for biomonitoring disturbance and regeneration of neotropical rainforests using bryophytes as indicators. It has been developed using field data from Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina and is designed for use in neotropical rainforests at altitudes of up to 2000 m.
The objective was to develope a biomonitoring system that can be applied relatively easily and at a low cost in different parts of the Neotropics and allows the comparison of very different forest types.
The program was developed in the course of the project „ Zonas de amortiguamiento como instrumento para manejar la biodiversidad en los bosques tropicales “ (Buffer zones as an instrument for sustainable use of rainforest biodiversity in three countries on the eastern slope of the Andes) financed by the European Community under the INCO-DC program (Contract number IC18CT980259).
The program may be used and distributed free of any cost as long as it remains absolutely unchanged (see license agreement). All rights of the program are reserved by the author.
Coordinator of the project:

128. Family Scarabaeidae - Introduction
Photos and information on various kinds of scarab beetles, especially those from tropical rainforests.
http://www.naturalworlds.org/scarabaeidae/index.htm
Welcome to Family SCARABAEIDAE , an educational web site dedicated to scarab beetles. Here you will find information and photographs of some of the species of scarab beetles I have worked with or have a special interest in. Some of the information on this site pertains to the maintenance and breeding of scarab beetles in captivity. The family Scarabaeidae is a large and diverse group of beetles with many representatives worldwide. They range in size from diminutive to truly massive. Their colors vary from dull brown to metallic gold. In general, scarabs are bulky insects. Among the largest are the genera Goliathus Megasoma Dynastes , and Chalcosoma . The types of scarab beetles portrayed on these pages will primarily be members of the subfamilies dynastinae and cetoniinae . The dynastine group is comprised of the "rhinoceros beetles", and the cetoniine group contains those species often referred to as the "flower beetles". There are thousands of species of in the family Scarabaeidae, and though I could hardly begin to show you them all, I will do my best to give you some idea of the scope of their diversity by presenting profiles of some of the more famous members of this beetle group. Dynastines Cetoniines are usually characterized by brilliant coloration. Some species are highly iridescent, or are covered with a fine satin-like texture decorated with interesting patterns of stripes, spots and other markings. Some of the heaviest insects in the world, the

Introduction to CERRA
Although rainforests cover only about 0.3 % of Australia, they contain about half of all Australian plant families and about a third of Australia's mammal and bird species. Selected as World Heritage sites for their exceptional biodiversity or rarity, the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves (CERRA) have an extremely high conservation value and provide habitat for more than 200 rare or threatened plant and animal species.

Subtropical Rainforests
Sub-tropical rainforests are generally found where the rainfall is more than 1300mm annually and growing in fertile eutrophic parent rocks (basalt and rich shales), you'll most likely find subtropical rainforest favouring sheltered gullies from sea level to about 900 metres. There is normally a well developed multi layered canopy of between 10 and 60 species of trees, many of which will exhibit the buttressing commonly associated with rainforest trees. Strangler species, including the ubiquitous Strangler Fig, stands of Bangalow Palms, woody vines and large epiphytes such as Orchids, Birdsnest, Elk and Staghorn ferns will be obvious, and the ground cover will consist of ground ferns and large leafed herbs. Despite the huge diversity of species, the more common ones are Booyongs (Argyrodendron spp.), Yellow Carrabeen (Sloanea woollsii), Rosewood (Dysoxylum fraseranum), the Fig (Ficus spp) and Lilly Pillie (Syzygium) families.
