natural sights.
Kaieteur Falls,
where the 400-foot
wide Potaro River
plunges 822 feet
downward from the Pakaraima Plateau, is the world's longest single-drop waterfalls.
Guyana, a country of exceptional natural beauty, is a splendid combination of the Caribbean and South America, with fascinating touches of a sometimes turbulent past. Perched on the north-east corner of the South American continent, Guyana stretches 450 miles from its long Atlantic coastline into dense equatorial forest and the broad savannah of the Rupununi. The picturesque capital and primary port is Georgetown, a city of comfortable, modern hotels, fine colonial buildings, and broad, tree-lined boulevards. The striking wooden architecture is reminiscent of Guyana's centuries as a Dutch, and then a British colony. Georgetown offers an evocative introduction to the land of Guyana. Don't miss the imposing St. George's Cathedral, reputed to be the tallest wooden building in the world. Life in Guyana is dominated by mighty rivers, including the Demerara, the Berbice and the Essequibo, which provide essential highways into the rain forests and jungles of the interior. Mankind has made little impact here, and today Guyana remains one of the world's most exciting destinations for adventuresome travel and exploration.

What do you picture when you hear the term rainforests? Do you think of a hot, steamy, wet area with lots of trees? Let's learn about rainforests! What is a rainforest? There are two types of rainforests, tropical and temperate. Tropical rainforests are forests that receive more than 80 inches of rain a year. Some rainforests receive as much as 200-400 inches of rain a year! Rainforests also have large amounts of humidity, or water vapor in the air.
Temperate rainforests are forests that have distinct seasons and moderate climate. The rain occurs evenly throughout the year.
Look at the chart below to compare tropical and temperate rainforests. Rainforests Tropical Temperate Amount of rain About 200" - 400" rain per year About 100" of rain per year Types of leaves Broadleaf Needle Number of tree species Many (hundreds of species) Few (10 - 20 species) Temperature ºC to 25 ºC (stays constant) Ranges -30 ºC to 30 ºC Endangered YES!

RAINFORESTS
Did you know the Strangler Fig is one of the best known of all rainforest plants. It actually grows around another tree - and may eventually kill its host. A FEMALE FIG-BIRD FEASTS ON RAINFOREST FIGS
A strangler fig starts to grow when a bird or possum dropping, containing the strangler fig seed, lodges somewhere high in the host tree. If nutrients, water and sunlight are present, the seed germinates and soon sends long, thin roots down the trunk of the host tree to the forest floor.
Once the roots reach the nutrient-rich leaf litter below, the strangler fig grows quickly. A network of roots envelops the host, and up in the canopy, the strangler fig begins to compete with the host tree for the precious light. In time, the strangler fig can grow to over 45 metres, and the host tree can be overwhelmed, and die. LARGE UPRIGHT LEAVES OF THE 'BIRD-NEST' FERN
The bird's nest fern is another plant that attaches itself to a host, though, unlike the strangler fig, it doesn't present a threat to its host. The bird's nest fern is an epiphyte, a plant that grows on another plant, or a rockface, or even a solid enough vine, without taking nutrients from its host.

Should rainforests be cut down?
Many rainforests around the world are being destroyed to make way for farms or mining. In Becky's report she discusses whether this is a good thing or not.
"Our rainforests are home to millions of species of plants and animals. But many big companies chop down the trees in the rainforests to use them for furniture and mining for oil and metals, like gold and copper. Cure diseases However, doing this is killing thousands of animals and plants that haven't even been discovered. Some of these plants may be able to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS. Cutting down the trees also speeds up global warming, which will melt the ice in the Arctic. This could then flood lots of countries, and destroy homes and even people. Big impact On the other hand, cutting down the rainforests will provide jobs for people who need money. And will also provide furniture for people.

Rainforest Basics
Rainforest Experiences What is a Rainforest? Is there a difference between a rainforest and a jungle? ... Amazon Quick Facts WHAT IS A RAINFOREST?
From "The Neotropical Companion" by John Kricher: A rainforest is essentially a non-seasonal forest, where rainfall is both abundant and constant. IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A JUNGLE AND A RAINFOREST?
From "The Neotropical Companion" by John Kricher: When a rainforest is disturbed, such as by hurricane, lightning strikes or human activity,
the disturbed area is opened, permitting the penetration of large amounts of light. Fast growing plan species intolerant of shade are temporarily favored
and a tangle of thin-boled trees, shrubs and vines result. Like a huge, dense pile carpet, a mass of greenery, or "jungle",
soon covers the gap created by the disturbance. Another explanation: A tropical rainforest has more kinds of trees and other plant life than any other area of the world. Most trees in the tropical rainforest are broad leaf trees that grow closely together. The tallest trees may grow as tall as 200 feet. The tops, called crowns, form a covering of leaves about 100-150 feet above the ground. This cover is called the upper canopy. The crowns of the smaller trees form one or two lower canopies. These canopies share the forest floor so that it receives less than one percent as much sunlight as does the upper canopy. As a result, only ferns and other plants requiring little sunlight grown on the forest floor. This makes it possible for a person to easily walk through most parts of a tropical rainforest.
