T. Sibona. F.A.O Plants Animals Climate Southeast Asian Rainforests The tropical rain forest is a forest of tall trees in a region of year-round warmth. An average of 50 to 260 inches (125 to 660 cm.) of rain falls yearly. Rainforests now cover less than 6% of Earth's land surface. Scientists estimate that more than half of all the world's plant and animal species live in tropical rain forests. Tropical rainforests produce 40% of Earth's oxygen. A tropical rain forest has more kinds of trees than any other area in the world. Scientists have counted about 100 to 300 species in one 2 1/2-acre (1-hectare) area in South America. Seventy percent of the plants in the rainforest are trees. About 1/4 of all the medicines we use come from rainforest plants. Curare comes from a tropical vine, and is used as an anesthetic and to relax muscles during surgery. Quinine, from the cinchona tree, is used to treat malaria. A person with lymphocytic leukemia has a 99% chance that the disease will go into remission because of the rosy periwinkle. More than 1,400 varieties of tropical plants are thought to be potential cures for cancer. All tropical rain forests resemble one another in some ways. Many of the trees have straight trunks that don't branch out for 100 feet or more. There is no sense in growing branches below the canopy where there is little light. The majority of the trees have smooth, thin bark because there is no need to protect the them from water loss and freezing temperatures. It also makes it difficult for

http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/se_asian_rnfrst.htm
Plants Animals Climate Tropical Rainforests The Southeast Asian rainforests are the oldest, consistent rainforests on Earth, dating back to the Pleistocene Epoch 70 million years ago. It has a biological richness and diversity unequaled by that of the Amazon or African rainforests. Yet Southeast Asia is losing its rainforests faster than any equatorial region, and has the fewest remaining primary rainforests. It is projected that most of the primary rainforests of Southeast Asia will be destroyed in the next 10 years. One interesting feature of the lowland rainforests of Malaysia, Borneo and Sumatra is the dominance of one family of trees, the Dipterocarpaceae. Dipterocarp are emergent trees and can reach heights of 120 feet. Their crowns are supported on large straight trunks. Many epiphytes, like orchids and ferns grow on the trees. Lianas, vines and strangler figs cling to the trees as they grow towards the sunlight. The emergent species is the tualang

Rainforest Information Centre Educational Supplement RAINFORESTS OF THE WORLD What Are Rainforests? There are many definitions. In ecological terms, rainforests have been defined as "multi-storied closed, broad leaved forest vegetation with a continuous tree canopy of variable height and with characteristic diversity of species and life forms" . The Importance of Rainforests 1.1 Biodiversity Because of tropical deforestation, it has been estimated that at least 40 species are perishing every day. This is a rate hundreds of times faster than at any period in recent geological time. Tropical forests cover only 12 per cent of the land area of the Earth, yet they are home to between 50 and 90 per cent of the world's species. They contain 90% of non-human primates, 40% of all birds of prey and 80% of the world's insects and over 60% of all known plants. Because one species in a tropical forest may be found in a small area and nowhere else, the destruction of relatively small areas of forest can cause extinctions.

rainforests are a complex balance of plants and animals. This is called an ecosystem. implement laws to protect large areas of rainforests.
http://www.cap.nsw.edu.au/bb_site_intro/stage3_Modules/rainforest_module/
Background
Rainforests are a complex balance of plants and animals. This is called an ecosystem.
In the past, Australian Aboriginals have found food, shelter and medicine within the
rainforest, but have done so, without damage to the ecosystem.
Today human involvement is threatening the rainforest environment.
Question
Why do you think the Australian government should make laws
to protect our rainforests?
Task
Congratulations, your school has chosen you to join a team of scientists who are
going on a dangerous two week expedition into unknown territories of an Australian rainforest. You are to provide evidence which will help support the government's decision to implement laws to protect large areas of rainforests. You are to use your time in the rainforest to study and investigate the plants and animals which live there, and their dependency upon one another. You must also consider the overall effects to the environment of any human involvement, and use this information to explain why the goverment should make

http://www.cap.nsw.edu.au/bb_site_intro/stage3_Modules/wet_dry/rainfore.htm
RAINFORESTS Environment
Rainforests are very dense, warm, wet forests. They are havens for millions of plants and animals. The plants of the rainforest generate much of the Earth's oxygen. These plants are also very important to people in other ways; many are used in new drugs that fight disease and illness.
Climate
It is almost always raining in a rainforest. Rainforests get over 2 m (80 inches) of rain each year. This is about 3.8 cm (11/2 inches) of rain each week. The range of temperature in a tropical rainforest is usually between 24-27° C (75° F and 80° F).
Where are Rainforests?
Tropical rainforests are found in a belt around the equator of the Earth.
Animals of the Rainforests
An incredible number of animals live in rainforests. Millions of insects, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals call them home. Insects are the most numerous animals in rainforests.
Plant Life
Different animals and plants live in different parts of the rainforest. Scientists divide the rainforest into strata (zones) based on the living environment. Starting at the top, the strata are:
EMERGENTS: Giant trees that are much higher than the average canopy height. It houses many birds and insects.

http://www.rain-tree.com/facts.htm
The Disappearing Rainforests
  • We are losing Earth's greatest biological treasures just as we are beginning to appreciate their true value. Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere 6% and experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years. One and one-half acres of rainforest are lost every second with tragic consequences for both developing and industrial countries. Rainforests are being destroyed because the value of rainforest land is percieved as only the value of its timber by short-sighted governments, multi-national logging companies, and land owners. Nearly half of the world's species of plants, animals and microoganisms will be destroyed or severely threatened over the next quarter century due to Rainforest deforestation. Experts estimates that we are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation. That equates to 50,000 species a year. As the rainforest species dissapear, so do many possible cures for life-threatening diseases. Currently, 121 prescription drugs sold worldwide come from plant-derived sources. While 25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients, less that 1% of these tropical trees and plants have been tested by scientists. Most rainforests are cleared by chainsaws, bulldozers and fires for its timber value and then are followed by farming and ranching operations, even by world giants like Mitsubishi Corporation, Gerogia Pacific, Texaco and Unocal.

The Amazon Rainforest has long been a symbol of mystery and power, a sacred link between humans and nature. It is also the richest biological incubator on the planet. It supports millions of plant, animal and insect species - a virtual library of chemical invention. In these archives, drugs like quinine, muscle relaxants, steroids and cancer drugs are found. More importantly, are the new drugs still awaiting discovery - drugs for AIDS, cancer, diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer's. Many secrets and untold treasures await discovery with the medicinal plants used by shamans, healers and the indigenous people of the Rainforest Tribes. So alluring are the mysteries of indigenous medical knowledge that over 100 pharmaceutical companies and even the US government are currently funding projects studying the indigenous plant knowledge and the specific plants used by native shamans and healers.
We hope you will join us and others in supporting rainforest conservation and preservation to stop this tide of destruction. Raising consciousness of the problems is simply not enough. You as a consumer do have power and it can be put to good use. We hope that this website will not only educate you about the problems but show you effective ways in which you as an individual can positively affect your life and health while positively affecting the rainforest.
