The world’s tropical rainforests are the richest and most diverse habitats on earth. They represent a vast reservoir of knowledge and contain a wealth of ecosystems and wildlife, with many species yet to be discovered.
Rainforest Concern was established as a registered charity in 1993 to protect the world’s tropical rainforests and the incredible biodiversity they contain, together with the indigenous people who still depend on them for their survival.

Gander Academy's What Are Tropical Rainforests?
The Web pages listed below are great sites to visit to research what tropical rainforests are.
  • What is a Rainforest?
The nutrient-filled soil in the rain forest is only 4 inches deep with red clay beneath it. This causes the trees to have very shallow roots.
  • What is a Rainforest
ropical rainforests are complex ecosystems, which are made up of four distinct environments. These "sub-ecosystems" are referred to as levels. In each level, animals and plants haveadapted to the existing environmental conditions. The different levels are: the emergent level, the canopy, the understory, and forest floor.
  • A Closer Look at Rainforests
Rainforest is a type of tropical forest that is dominated by closely spaced trees forming an unbroken canopy.. It is one of the most widespread and important types of forest in the world.
  • Rainforests
Rain Forest, woodland characterized by lush vegetation and comparatively high temperature and rainfall throughout the year. Rain forests are the world's most biologically diverse ecosystems.
  • Tropical Rainforests The tropical forests occur near the equator where temperature and light levels remain similar all year. Where the rainfall is also spread evenly throughout the year, tropical rainforests occur; where precipitation levels vary and there is a pronounced dry season, tropical moist forests grow, and in areas with less moisture are dry forests and savannas.

About Rainforests by the numbers Rainforests cover 2% of the Earth's surface, or 6% of its land mass, yet they house over half the plant and animal species on Earth. They originally covered at least twice that area. Tropical rainforests are defined primarily by two factors: location (in the tropics) and amount of rainfall they receive. Rainforests receive from 4 to 8 meters of rain a year 5 meters of rain falls on the rainforests of Borneo each year, five times as much as on the state of New York. The heavy vegetation blocks the rainfall, and water reaches the forest floor by rolling down branches and trunks or as a fine spray. Another distinctive characteristic is that rainforests have no "seasonality" no dry or cold season of slower growth. (Myers, Norman, The Primary Source) Tropical rainforests are the Earth's oldest living ecosystems. Fossil records show that the forests of Southeast Asia have existed in more or less their present form for 70 to 100 million years. (Myers, Norman, The Primary Source)

    Home: El Bosque Nuevo
About El Bosque Nuevo Our Advisors Contact El Bosque Nuevo ... Deutsche Version About 14 million hectares of tropical rain forest have been lost each year-that's each year, every year-since 1980. El Bosque Nuevo is working hard to reverse this appalling trend. Our efforts prove that biology and economics can be combined in behalf of human and biological needs. Too often, they are represented as being at odds or at war. The value of tropical rain forests can't be calculated in dollars or measured in biological terms. Their value is priceless on one hand as well as beyond full understanding on the other…but most experts can agree that losing rain forests to single-minded development is a devastating blight. The danger is, can humans survive if the rain forests don't? Rain forests are intimately bound up with the larger, subtle, absolutely vital rhythms and cycles of life on Planet Earth. They are as fundamental to our collective lives at this scale as cell division is to our individual lives at that scale. We cannot do without the unique range and depth of flora and fauna they nourish in their natural state. But that natural state is being torn apart by a short-term focus on profit that remains blind to the harmonious merging of economic desires with biological needs. There is a middle path that serves both priorities in a sustainable way. El Bosque Neuvo has found-and is moving with growing success up along-that ignored but sustainable "middle path."

    Rainforest
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Rainforest on Fatu-Hiva, Marquesas Islands A rainforest is a forested biome with high annual rainfall due to the Intertropical convergence zone . Some cite a minimum normal annual rainfall of 2000 mm (about 100 inches or 200 centimetres), with normal rainfall at least 60 mm during each of the twelve months of the year. Others set the minimum annual rainfall barrier as low as 1700 mm (about 67 inches). The soil can be poor because high rainfall tends to leach out soluble nutrients . This type of biome is found in both temperate and tropical climates . As well as prodigious rainfall, many rainforests are characterised by a high number of resident species and tremendous biodiversity Rain forests are home to two-thirds of all the living animal and plant species on the planet. It has been estimated that many hundreds of millions of new species of plants, insects, and microorganisms are still undiscovered and have no names yet. Tropical rain forests are called the "jewel of the earth", the "Earth's lungs", and the "world's largest pharmacy" because of the large amount of natural medicines discovered there. Despite the growth of flora in a rainforest, the actual quality of the soil is quite poor.

  • Why study the rainforest? Though we often take the plants and trees around us for granted, almost every aspect of our lives depends upon them. They feed us, clothe us, absorb carbon dioxide, provide us with oxygen, and give us building materials and medications. Drastic changes to the vegetation around us affect our health, economy, and environment. Wondrous in their diversity of species, prolific in their plant growth rates, rainforests are particularly important ecosystems. Scientists observe that both natural climate changes and human activities are stressing tropical rainforests in some regions, and so scientists are collecting the data they need to predict how these important ecosystems will respond. Terra Aqua , and Landsat
About 3 million years ago the Isthmus of Panama formed a land bridge between the continents of North and South America. Situated just north of the equator, Panama enjoys a warm climate year round and is mostly covered by lush tropical rainforests.
