Rainforests play an invaluable role in sustaining life on Earth. Extending from the colder climates of Alaska and Chile to the tropics of South America, Africa and Asia, rainforests provide a critical habitat for many of the Earth's plant and animal species. Although people often don't realize it, rainforests also play an important role in sustaining life outside the rainforest by regulating the global climate and the water cycle, absorbing carbion dioxide from the atmosphere, and providing us with medicines, food, and more. WHY WE SHOULD NOT FAIL TO PLANT MORE TREES.

Planet Earth, which safely carries its inhabitants over 2.5 million kilometres each day, at an average speed of around 107,000 kph, can only perform this task with the aid of a very reliable and efficient shield. Its ironic, but its because our shielding atmosphere works so well that most people rarely give much thought to this gargantuan journey through our Solar System. The way that some of the so-called most intelligent inhabitants of this planet are deliberately damaging our atmosphere, can only be described as gross selfishness or ignorance. In one phase of atmospheric vandalism, they are burning the candle at both ends, by clearing rainforest on a grand scale then polluting the atmosphere by burning the very same trees which were filtering the air that you and I breathe. As well as being our natural air purifiers, and the oxygen suppliers to all that breathe, trees play an essential role in the hydrologic cycle. This is the process which releases water molecules to rise up into our atmosphere to form rain bearing clouds. To a great extent our weather is shaped by our vegetation, patchy areas of vegetation will most likely generate patchy weather. In increasingly larger areas around the globe, the prevailing winds are blowing over cleared land or concrete jungles. In the past they were passing over much larger tree-covered areas which were acting as moist sponges, where they would pick up the moisture to form a broader, more even band of rain-bearing clouds. Creating large bodies of water by damming our major waterways can only result in a concentration of water-evaporation, the end result allows the possibility of too much rain creating destructive floods.

The Vanishing Rainforest
It is no secret that our rainforests are quickly becoming an endangered species in and of themselves. It is our commitment to do whatever possible to educate those around us to the extreme importance of the forests and how vulnerable they are to the destructive forces of man. Please take a look at what we have included in our research project. If you have anything you feel should be include on our pages, please drop us a line. In conjunction with our tropical rain forest project, Dale Beasley's sixth grade class of St. Philomena School in Des Moines, Washington, has completed a project entitled, "Rainforests of the Pacific Northwest", examining a different type of rainforest right in our own country.

A Sampling of Tropical Rainforest Animals Rainforests are very dense, warm, wet forests. They are havens for millions of plants and animals. Rainforests are extremely important in the ecology of the Earth. The plants of the rainforest generate much of the Earth's oxygen. These plants are also very important to people in other ways; many are used in new drugs that fight disease and illness. Where are Rainforests? Tropical rainforests are located in a band around the equator Go to a rainforest map printout to color
Strata of the Rainforest

Different animals and plants live in different parts of the rainforest. Scientists divide the rainforest into strata (zones) based on the living environment. Starting at the top, the strata are:
  • EMERGENTS : Giant trees that are much higher than the average canopy height. It houses many birds and insects.

BioEsfera was developed by , of Rice University , as a response to the need to train teachers in Spanish and Conservation Biology, and to provide an opportunity for the acquisition of new cultural perspectives in a society that characterizes itself for its diverse ethnic and cultural composition. The group of teachers that participated in this effort are all members of The Rice School/La Escuela Rice's Teaching staff. This is a new school of the Houston ISD program which is implementing a novel approach to schooling which includes bilingual English/Spanish instruction as part of its teaching method. The project was financed, in its entirety by the school. Teachers paid for the EcoEscuela portion. The Escuela Rice parents group and the community help with the rest of the funds by direct contribution or by helping with fund raising events such as:
  • Bake Sales
  • Garage Sales
  • Car Wash
  • Pizza Sales
BioEsfera was made possible thanks to not only the participants but to the support of all of the Escuela Rice community, including a heavy economic participation from the Parents Group.

CENTRAL AMERICA This region was once entirely covered with rainforest, but large areas have been cleared for cattle ranching and for sugar cane plantations.
Like other major rainforests, the jungles and mangrove swamps of Central America contain many plants and animals found nowhere else. Central America is famous for its large number of tropical birds, including many kinds of parrots. GO TO TOP THE AMAZON The Amazon jungle is the world's largest tropical rainforest. The forest covers the basin of the Amazon, the world's second longest river.
The Amazon is home to the greatest variety of plants and animals on Earth. A of all the world's plants and birds and about of all mammal species are found there.

You can give your children the geographical framework that will help them understand so much else that they study, with free interactive maps. Geography is spatial, why not study it spatially?
The heart of geography, and even the source of its name is the map—a picture of the world which organizes our understanding of places. Manipulating a map, assembling it, is the best way to learn where features are, and how near or far they are to each other. The map is a framework that brings other knowledge together and makes the world understandable.
The "what?" and the "where?" are a necessary beginning to understanding the "who?" and the "why?"
