The history of Blacks and Black communities in Guelph and Wellington County dates back to the earliest years of settlement by non First Nations peoples. It is a history of courage against great odds - of escapes to freedom from slavery in the United States, of attempts at both segregated and integrated communities, of achievements in education, agriculture, the arts, military, politics, and sports. This exhibition follows that history from the establishment of two settlements in Wellington County - Pierpoint and Queen's Bush - to the starting of a Black community in Guelph geographically centred on the British Methodist Episcopal Church. The exhibition has been organized cooperatively between the Wellington County Museum and Archives, and Guelph Museums. Funding support was received from the Canadian Image Project of the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canadian Museums Association. This exhibition is one of eleven such projects across Canada. The Guelph and Wellington project was guided by a community advisory committee consisting of participants from the Guelph and District Multicultural Centre, the Wellington County Board of Education, the University of Guelph History Department, the Wellington County Historical Society and volunteers of Guelph Museums.

This uplifting documentary features the tireless efforts of individuals in the Edmonton Muslim community who rallied together to save the Al-Rashid mosque. The first mosque to be built in Canada, it was slated for demolition in the year of its 50th anniversary. Organizers who took on the enormous task of restoring and relocating the mosque talk about the project and its significance. They provide insight into the controversy that emerged when it was decided to move the mosque to Edmonton's living history museum, Fort Edmonton Park. Al Tasmim celebrates the pride of the Muslim community when, in May 1992, they had secured a place for the mosque in Edmonton's history.

Canada's wild northern frontier, which has etched itself into the national psyche, and its distinct patchwork of peoples have created a country that is decidedly different from its brash neighbour. It's the edginess between Canada's indigenous, French and British traditions that gives the nation its complex three-dimensional character. Add to this a constant infusion of US culture and a plethora of traditions brought by migrants, and you have a thriving multicultural society.

This area began, as did most of Ontario, as a wild and wooded region, best traveled by water. The first known settler in the Brighton area arrived in 1796; a gentleman named Obediah Simpson. By 1831 there were 19 official families in the area, as well as a number of unregistered settlers. By 1851 the population had increased to 500 people and 10 mills in Brighton. As did most small towns of the area, Brighton reached its peak in population and prosperity between 1830 and 1875. This impressive pair of books that will provide elementary-age children with solid factual information about different subject areas. The books' creators are to be credited not only for wanting to document events, but also for dealing frankly with historical injustices caused by encroachment of European civilization. The books are organized by subject area, with indexes and tables of contents. The layout on each page is appealing, with text interspersed by accurate illustrations. One note of complaint: original photographs would convey the hardships faced by the railway workers far better than an illustration can. Similarly, people who live in the North are more tangible to children through a photograph than a drawn illustration. The two forms could have been combined for a more realistic and educational presentation. The Kids Book of Canada's Railway and How the CPR Was Built.

to be Published in England
Reporter: Robert Burnet
The book, 'Canadian Railway Telegraph History,' has had a successful first year of publication. It is the first book in Canada to cover the historical development and use of the telegraph with the railway. Copies of the CRTH have gone to 20 US States, nine Canadian provinces, England, Scotland, and Uruguay. As a result, a publisher in England was quite thrilled with the book and is now currently preparing it for independent publication in England. It will be offered for sale in the U.K., and Europe sometime later this year through the RPM Historical Society, Kent, England. The book details the history of Canada's telegraph with the first public demonstration on 24 May 1846 at Toronto's City Hall and Canada's first commercial telegraph company, until 1956 with the Canadian National Railways Telegraph Company. Also covered is the CPR Telegraph Company, early telegraph laws, Morse equipment, the people behind the telegraph, forms, and social aspects. The CRTH also points out the historical marriage of the telegraph beginning with the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada in 1856 between Toronto and Montreal. Interestingly, the United States developed their railroads first and the telegraph lines followed the right-of-ways after 1844; in Canada, the telegraph came first (24 May 1846) and the railways followed the telegraph circuits (1856), in fact, the telegraph united Canada at least ten years before the Canadian Pacific Railway!

    Cultivating the Garden
    Railway Station Gardening
Influenced by the social reform ideas of the period, public institutions began to take responsibility for improving the property within their management. For the Canadian Pacific Railway this coincided with the desire to promote the fertility of the prairies, in order to encourage immigration. They started with a simple program in 1908 to provide seeds as an encouragement to station agents to cultivate small gardens on station property. The idea was enthusiastically adopted across the country. A forestry department was established to formalize the program. Greenhouses were built to give plants an early start before they were distributed to the individual stations. Teams of experts crossed the country inspecting the gardens. Other railway lines, not to be outdone, started their own programs. As the station agents gained expertise, it was often they who helped to create local horticultural societies and garden clubs.
