If King County Council member Ron Sims has his way, the 47 mile right of way owned by BNSF and operated on by the Spirit of Washington Dinner Train is in danger of becomming a trail, with little or no chance of ever seeing rail service again. Sims has announced that the King County Council is negotiating with BNSF for ownership of the line to make it a trail, "and maybe" years from now, make a joint use out of it. Currently there are freight customer on that line, and it's used by the Spirit of Washington dinner train. It would also make a perfect eventual light rail line, but Sims does not seem to care. The Underground Railroad
Michigan was a strong anti-slavery state.
These are the general routes that escaping slaves took
through Michigan to reach Canada where slavery was illegal.
Before the war many Michigan citizens helped slaves escape from the South, via the Underground Railroad, a secret, often informal, organization of safe hiding places and people willing to provide transportation between them. By day, runaway slaves hid in buildings or underground cellars called stations. At night, they traveled north. Station operators gave the slaves food, warm clothing and a place to sleep. They then gave them directions or transportation to the next station, ten to fifteen miles away. The Underground Railroad operated primarily between 1830 and 1861. Sometime after the Civil War began, a woman in Bowling Green, Kentucky, used this chain to keep her slave in her barn. The slave sawed through the chain and walked to the camp of the 23rd Michigan Infantry. Soldiers took the man to a blacksmith who removed the chain. Colonel Spaulding kept the chain and presented it to the Michigan state librarian upon his return to Michigan. Michigan has many Civil War heroines. Among them were Quakers who worked in the Underground Railroad. Born a Quaker, Laura Smith Haviland lived in Adrian and led escaped slaves to freedom in Canada. She was so effective in her abolitionist activities and her work for the Underground Railroad that Southern slave owners offered a $3,000 reward for her capture. She and her family opened one of the first schools in Michigan to admit black boys and girls. A historical marker stands at the Raisin Valley Friends Church in Adrian where her father was the first pastor. Laura Haviland is buried in the church cemetery.

Pressroom October 6, 2004 Castle Introduces The Railroad Security and Public Awareness Act of 2004 "Our rails are still vulnerable" Castle says WASHINGTON, D.C. In response to the transportation security recommendations laid out by the 9/11 Commission, Delaware Congressman Michael N. Castle today introduced his Railroad Security and Public Awareness Act of 2004. Castle's bill would enhance rail worker security training; fund station, train and infrastructure security projects and increase public awareness of rail security. "Public transit systems have been the target of terrorist attacks around the world and many experts report on the urgent need for a significant investment in transit security improvements. The terrorist attacks earlier this year in Madrid only highlight the need to expand security on our rail systems. We must ensure that our nation's rail workers and passengers are protected and trained to the best of our ability to prevent a similar attack in the U.S. from occurring and have a well trained incident response in place," said Castle. "Not enough is being invested in improving rail and transit security. We have seen massive efforts to shore up security in our skies and even on our roads, but efforts to boost rail security have not received the same federal commitment. Our national homeland security strategy is only as strong as our weakest link," said Castle.

hile the pioneering railroad in the Littleton area was the , which arrived in 1871, the behemoth would become the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe. During the last decade of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th, it was not unusual for thirty or more Santa Fe trains to pass through town each day. As reported by one wag in 1889, "...we counted twelve trains as they passed to and fro inside an hour. No one has any idea of the monster traffic on these two roads until they go and look for themselves." Most of these belonged to the AT&SF.
Depot, 1970. The Santa Fe built its depot in Littleton after about one year of service, in 1888. It stood just north of the D&RG depot, and was a wooden frame building in the "railroad style" popular in the late 19th century. The exterior walls had a board and batten treatment and there was a bay ticket window facing the tracks. The design emphasis was toward function over aesthetics. The gabled and overhanging roof of asphalt shingles was meant to shelter passengers on the platform. The Depot Art Center, c. 1997.
