Railroad and Locomotive Career and Job Description
During the 19th century, the railroad transportation system was the unifying force of the United States and the key to the nation’s economic strength. Rail transportation continues to play a very important role in the transportation and economic systems of the U.S. Passenger and freight trains provide massive transportation services throughout the nation, and light-rail systems and subways form the basis of mass passenger transport in many large cities.
Locomotive engineers are some of the rail industry’s most able and experienced workers. Their work involves the inter-station operation of large passenger and freight trains. Although some engineers operate electrically powered locomotives, the majority run diesel locomotives.

EDITORIAL RAILROAD TRANSPORTATION SUPPORTS GROWING TRADE FLOWS IN NORTH AMERICA Home Railroad activity has become a competitive means for shipping merchandise in North America. Rail transport offers the possibility of inter-modal transportation throughout the NAFTA region. Mexico revitalized its railroad system through a privatization process that has attracted new investors into the sector. Privatization started in 1995 when the Mexican government amended the Constitution to allow private investment in railroads, and Congress passed the new Railway Service Regulatory Law, which establishes procedures for granting concessions and permits for private participation and foreign direct investment. The Mexican railroad system network was divided into three main regions: Northeast, Pacific-North, and Southeast. In June 1997 the 50-year concession for the Northeast Region, which connects Mexico and the U.S. at the Laredo-Nuevo Laredo border crossing, was awarded to Transportación Ferroviaria Mexicana (TFM), a joint venture between Mexico's Transportación Marítima Mexicana (TMM) and U.S. Kansas City Southern Industries (KCSI). Southbound, the Northeast railroad reaches the manufacturing centers of Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Mexico City, and connects to the port of Lázaro Cárdenas in the Pacific coast, and with the ports of Altamira and Veracruz in the Gulf of Mexico. Northbound, the Northeast system interconnects with the Kansas City Southern Railway, the Gateway Western Railway, the Texas Mexican Railway, as well as with the Canadian National and the Illinois Central Railway.

Railroad Maps, 1828-1900 provides students an opportunity to study a form of transportation and its documentation while also improving their historical thinking skills. Using the collection's maps in comparative exercises, students will develop their chronological thinking and historical comprehension, while other activities draw on research and role playing to develop analysis, interpretation, and judgment. Chronological Thinking To look for change over time, students can compare the oldest map in the collection to the ones more recently created. Have students choose a geographic region from the Geographic Location Index . Then view the maps in chronological order. Considering maps as reflections of the railroad during the time periods in which they were created, students can look for and analyze evidence of how railroad transportation changed.

The primary source materials of Railroad Maps, 1828-1900 provide students with first-hand evidence of several important aspects of nineteenth-century American history. Students can explore the development of railroad transportation, military campaigns, the growth of the nation, industrialism, and tourism. Because students can find evidence of these historical topics for themselves in the collection's maps, they will gain a lasting comprehension of what they discover. 1) Railroad Transportation For a good introduction to the collection, students can study the introduction of railroads to the United States and its impact, from its most fundamental significance to its more sophisticated meaning. Trains introduced new innovations in the continuing search for the easiest way to move large loads of passengers and goods quickly and efficiently from one place to another. The train linked together several cars or vehicles into one long caravan. This linking was made possible by the use of tracks or roads of rail to guide the train behind the pulling engine. The locomotive was thought of as concentrating the pulling power of many horses into one entity, and thus rated by degree of "horse power". Students can better appreciate these and other changes introduced by the railroad, by examining maps of their choice from the collection's

Second Central Appalachian railroad transportation case settled
    ERIK SCHELZIG
    Associated Press
A second federal railroad rate case over Central Appalachian coal transportation costs has been settled, Duke Power announced Wednesday. The agreement between the subsidiary of Charlotte, N.C.-based Duke Energy Corp. and CSX Corp. comes less than a week after a similar agreement with Norfolk Southern Corp. Duke filed the 2001 complaint with the Surface Transportation Board after the two railroads raised rates from about $10 to $15 per carload of coal from West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky, costing the utility an extra $45 million to $50 million, spokesman Tom Williams said. Wednesday's agreement involves a multiyear transportation contract with Jacksonville, Fla.-based CSX Corp. at levels comparable to 2002 rates, and provides for better access to new coal suppliers. Unlike last week's settlement with Norfolk Southern, the CSX agreement does not involve a cash payment, Williams said.
