    by Ron "Keeper" O'Dell Level 3 2 August 2004
NOTE: This is an orchestral/choral file with portamento controls on the voices and so forth which probably will not play properly on anything but another Yamaha XG SoftSynthesizer, with which I composed it. Angelina is a cartoon series concept with a 36-episode storyline by an extremely talented Italian animator friend of mine, Federica Giulietti. Between jobs on various TV shows and at graphics arts studios, she has been working on this concept for close to 10 years, and finished the animated title sequence in 2003. I decided that it should have an original theme, so I wrote this music. It's my first attempt at writing for orchestra. You can view the animation matched with the theme by clicking here then choosing on the left side which size file to download. Because of the compression, the sound quality isn't so great. You can hear a clear MP3 of this music the way it should sound and with most sound effects removed by clicking

Mimi Blais & John Petley - "Once Upon a Ragtime"
Bio Quotes Program Home Week 2 ... Week 6
January 2005 marks the 15th anniversary of the very first ragtime concert that Mimi Blais gave at "La Place des Arts" in Montreal, Qc. Canada (01-14-1990). Six months later she was going to the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival. She felt then that this music would change her life... and it did! She really fell in love with ragtime and its story. A lot of Mimi's fans don't know that her "goal" with Ragtime had always been to write a show, a great show on ragtime music and play it around the world. That way, she can tell everybody that this music is the most important music in America. "RAGTIME IS THE TRUNK OF A BIG TREE!!" Her recent union with pianist John Petley , made her realize that, between both of them, they now have all the Branches of the ragtime tree: ONCE UPON A RAG TIME was born (January 2005).This is the title of the show as well as Mimi's new CD. Composer, comedian and stage director as well, last May, Mimi emceed a show at Le Spectrum in Montreal called Ladies of Jazz and performed beside famous NY modern-jazz pianist, JoAnne Brackeen. She was featuring women composers of ragtime and her own compositions as well.

Popular Music in the 1890s by Vicki Ohl Popular music in the American 1890s covered a variety of scenes which reflected both continued traditions as well as innovations. The town band provided entertainment for many functions, and was an institution in nearly every community. It played waltzes and two-steps for local dances and for concerts. Concerts, often outdoors, also featured marches, popular songs and program music. The most legendary bandleader of the era was John Philip Sousa, director of the U.S. Marine Band from 1880-1892. After that he toured America with his own band. Between 1879 and 1915 he wrote 140 military marches, such as Stars and Stripes Forever (1896). The piano became the central entertainment center of the home in the 1890s, a symbol of culture and prestige. Generally, women and girls played the instrument for the enjoyment of other family members, friends, or suitors. Popular songs reflected every aspect of American culture, and were often based on religious and ethnic themes and current fads, as well as courtship. The wave of sentimentality which swept the latter part of the nineteenth century in literature manifested itself in music which was ideal for the parlor. Lyrics frequently told tearful tales ending in death or a lover's departure. Many of the songs were written in waltz time. One of the first hits in the popular music field was After the Ball, written in 1892 by Charles K. Harris.X Other popular songs of the decade included The Band Played On, On the Banks of the Wabash, and Bicycle Built for Two.

Irene and Vernon Castle: Dancers
"The public of the nineties had asked for tunes to sing. The public of the turn of the century had been content to whistle. But the public from 1910 on demanded tunes to dance to." - Edward B. Marks, noted music publisher. Our great-grandparents simply loved to dance to ragtime music. In fact, the high-water mark of popularity for ragtime coincided with the fabled "Dance Craze" of the 1910s. During this period the link between dancing and popular music became stronger than ever before, and more than a hundred new steps appeared between just 1912 and 1914. It was no longer enough to just sing, play, or sit and listen to a piece of music; for a tune to be a big "hit," you had to be able to dance to it. And at the core of this mania whirled the celebrated Irene and Vernon Castle. Irene and Vernon Castle were undoubtedly the most famous ballroom dancers of their day, and while they did not invent social dancing, they were among the first to make a career of it. The Castles popularized many innovative dances, and their talents and public attitudes made them perfect symbols for the new generation. The public, accustomed to well-padded and stiff standards of personal appearance and carriage, found them exotically slim and "chic." Both were fine athletes. Vernon was tall and slightly built, and Irene willowy, boyish, and yet thoroughly feminine. Together they were a breath of air for a world stuck in the stodgy Edwardian mode. And their brief, almost incandescent career stands as a metaphor of an entire glittering, fragile world soon to be shattered by the horror of world war.

BARRELHOUSE/BOOGIE-WOOGIE (late 1800s) In the drinking houses, pianists began to play music known as Barrelhouse or Boogie-Woogie. This form of music was strongly rhythmic. It contained repeated bass patterns played by the left hand - this gave it its drive. The bass part was overlayed by the tunes/phrases played in the right hand. It contained simple harmonies and could be improvised. Barrelhouse/Boogie-Woogie remained popular into the 1930s and can still be heard today. THE CAKEWALK The Cakewalk was the first syncopated music to become popular in America. It was considered to be high society pasttime. Among African Americans it was considered to be less respectable. The Cakewalk was often passed off as Ragtime to those who could not tell the difference between the two. As a matter of fact, the first three published "Rags" were in truth Cakewalks. These were: Mississippi Rag by William Krell (1897) Ragtime March by William Bebe (1897) Ragtime Patrol by RJ Hamilton The first true Rag

Joplin's ragtime plays on in his old St. Louis home

A tour of the Joplin House takes visitors through exhibit rooms and a reproduced-turn-of-the-century flat. Hours:
Scott Joplin House State Historic Site is open Monday-Saturday 10-3:30 in summer and Sunday 12-5. Tours are given on the hour and half hour. Admission: $2 for adults and $1.25 for ages 6-12. Information: Dining: Union Station, a train station turned shopping/dining complex, includes: Hard Rock Cafe; Landry's Seafood; Houlihan's (American cuisine); and a politically incorrect Hooters. Laclede's Landing, between the Gateway Arch and the Mississippi River, includes boats and warehouses-turned restaurants such as: The Old Spaghetti Factory; Jake's Steaks (barbecue); and Royal Dumpe Dinner Theatre (Elizabethan musical comedy). ON THE WEB It might seem ironic, or it might seem typical, that it took a wealthy white musician to give a mostly undiscovered African-American composer his due.

    Arrangements of Beethoven's Fur Elise
"Fur Elise" by Beethoven is one of our most popular piece of Sheet Music. Although the original work is for Piano Solo we are now able to present a number of arrangements by Andy Ralls for other instruments, all with piano accompaniment: Mark Isham's Crash
The soundtracks of Mark Isham have been based on a wide variety of instrumental forces, from small intimate groups through jazz ensembles to full orchestras. His film music has included "The Net", "Blade", "The Cooler" and his oscar-nominated score for "A River Runs Through It". This sonic variety has been increased even further with his score to Crash which consists almost entirely of computer-based sounds with a dash of solo vocals. Isham describes this method of music creation as "returning to the bedroom" and, in additional to the domestic location of the composer's equipment, the resulting music is also somehow intimate and personal. Isham demonstrates his versatility by moving us with raw sound. The film will be released in the UK on 12th August and the soundtrack is available now. More...

The recordings of Viridiana Productions, L.L.C. represent a grass roots movement designed to promote the new music Terra Verde , as well as various traditions from which it draws. Terra Verde is an adult contemporary music, distinctly American which fuses elements of European romanticism with New World ethnic styles, such as ragtime, jazz, Latin-American, country and pop. The result is a rich and vital language for our time, a new stage in the evolution of piano-based composition. Viridiana exists to champion the composers and performers of Terra Verde , and to pay tribute to the innovative and sometimes unheralded forerunners to this exciting new realm of American music.

    Ragtime Music :
Ragtime sprung up as a music form towards the end of the 19th century, and this was one of a number of forms which had their roots in this time period. This increasing diversity resulted from the fusion of African and European musical ideas in the Southern States of the U.S. It wasn't so much a deliberate crafting by music scholars, but more the result of experimentation and informal learning by example, often by self-taught musicians who played in streets and bars. This informal folk music became formalised into Ragtime by composers like Harvey and Joplin who played the music to large audiences and published it so that its popularity was able to spread. Ragtime was played usually on a solo piano, an instrument which most honkytonk bars and saloons possessed. The word Ragtime means "syncopated time", the main characteristic of these pieces being the Right Hand playing a syncopated tune while the Left Hand plays a simple regular line of alternating bass notes and simple chords, often called a "two-step" and not unlike the "Alberti Bass" used in classical music by the likes of Mozart and Haydn . Despite the fact that the Right Hand syncopations were far in excess of anything produced in classical music, the structure of these pieces was nevertheless quite strict in a classical sense. They consisted of a number of contrasting 16 bar sections (usually in 2/4 time) with repetitions and returns to previous sections or a "Da Capo" (return to the begining). This structure is very similar to various march or dance forms or the classical Rondo. Towards the end of each section or phrase there might be rising bass lines, changing harmonies or accidentals to give colour and emphasis to the cadences (phrase endings).
