Ragtime Scholarship Today
The Issues
Ragtime research is all over the map. On one side of the map reside an established group of researchers and writers who have made a career of repeating the old clichés, half-truths, and outright fictions. Some newcomers, lacking the insight and imagination to see beyond the bluster, continue the pattern of perpetuating baseless stories.
In another part of the landscape we see resourceful investigators who do the legwork required to illuminate unsuspected facets of a history that is obscured as much by the unthinking repetition of unfounded myths as by the unspoken, forgotten truths. Among the latter are several who are little known and unheralded, but who have been unearthing nuggets of splendor.
One would think these latter researchers would be celebrated and encouraged; in some circles they are. But a significant segment of today’s ragtime community prefers to retain the familiar, prefers the comfortable myths to any upsetting new versions of the ragtime story. At the root of this seemingly perplexing attitude is the pioneering study of ragtime They All Played Ragtime (1950), by Rudi Blesh and Harriet Janis. This remarkable book, often called “the bible of ragtime,” has enthralled, enlightened, and inspired generations of ragtime enthusiasts. The authors had the foresight to locate and capture the words and stories of surviving ragtimers and cast them in a beguiling form that, more than a half-century later, continues to work its magic on new readers. Though a few, isolated articles on ragtime had preceded publication of this book

Ragtime: A Musical and Cultural History (University of California Press, 1980) “This cogent, closely reasoned book is a major contribution to the study and understanding of ragtime and popular music. It would not be an exaggeration to claim that it sets new standards for ragtime scholarship, since, unlike most previous efforts in this field, it is based on meticulous (and meticulously documented) research, interpreted with a keep grasp of the music itself and its historical, cultural, social, and esthetic contexts.” Dan Morgenstern Annual Review of Jazz Studies “Two different kinds of readers will gravitate towards Berlin’s study of ragtime: the scholar will appreciate the refinement of the documentation and the articulate presentation of terminology, and the ragtime player, be he professional or simple hobbyist, will play every rag afterwards with a new sense of the rich vocabulary in this music. Berlin has created a model for further studies in the generic idioms that have appeared in the United States during the past century.”

Series 3: AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC ca. 1828-1980 by: Karen Linn, 1989 Scope and Content
The African-American series contains ca. 7,800 pieces of sheet music and folios dating from the 1820s to the 1980s; most of the material dates from after 1890. Many of the pieces were composed or performed by Afro-American musicians; other pieces were created by white musicians using black musical styles (for example Joseph Lamb's classic ragtime compositions). A large part of the series consists of songs about African-Americans (minstrel show songs, "coon songs"), often written in dialect and usually filled with negative stereotypes. Most, but not all, of the composers of this material were white. Subseries 3.1-3.7 are organized by musical genre and arranged by the chronological first appearance of the genre in American popular culture. The last subseries, 3.8, is a composer/performer aggregation including many musical genres but only African-American musicians. The DeVincent Collection holds a wealth of ragtime material which forms an important part of series 3. There are approximately 530 items of vocal ragtime and approximately 2,800 instrumental ragtime items. The principle composers of ragtime have separate folders and are indexed by name (however, some of their material may be in the general ragtime folders). One of the strengths of the DeVincent ragtime file is its diversity and inclusion of lesser-known figures. Sam DeVincent built the ragtime section with a broad conception of the genre, a conception in keeping with the thinking of the time. Characteristic two-steps, syncopated marches, and some dances from the ragtime dance craze (turkey trots, a few tangos, etc.) are included in the general file indicating the widespread infusion of ragtime rhythms into American popular music during the early 20th century.

Ragtime music first appeared in the early part of the 20th century, rising in the 1890's and fading away by 1920. It is one of the first purely American musical syles and has strong African-American influences.
Originally created by professional performers in honky-tonks and saloons, 'ragtime' evolved as a distinct style through the years as piano players began to compete with each other.
    Scott Joplin
The king of ragtime music writers, Scott Joplin brought ragtime to its classic form. An American composer and pianist, he was one of the most important developers of ragtime music. He elevated the "piano rag" to an artistic level unmatched before or since.
Born in Texarkana, Texas, Joplin taught himself to play the piano as a child, learning mostly classical music from a German neighbour. In his late teens he became an itinerant pianist in the low-life districts that provided the chief employment for many of the local black musicians. He settled in St. Louis in 1885. In 1893 he played at the  World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and in 1894 he moved to Sedalia, Missouri.

As an experiment, I am going to provide some FREE downloadable, GIF format, scanned images of sheet music for some ragtime pieces. The available scores will be EXCLUSIVELY LIMITED TO PUBLIC DOMAIN COMPOSITIONS! Please do NOT ask me to include copies of any compositions published more recently than 1922.
These GIF files can be printed out on your own printer, from your own computer, once you download and unzip the graphic archive file. The quality of these scanned images produces a very good result when printed using a reasonably good graphic program and printer, with 100dpi resolution or better.
One program which works very well for printing the sheet music scans in Windows is a freeware graphics program called IrfanView.
However, it is important that you do not use settings in your graphic program which may reduce the image resolution prior to printing the score. For example, some graphic programs have a setting which reduces the image to fit it entirely within the display screen on your CRT. If this setting is enabled, it generally will reduce the quality of the image, and the printed result will be very poor. Let the image on the computer screen spill outside of the viewable area, and fit the image to a single page when printing from the program.

Since that time we have developed our feature articles and In Search Of articles to a higher level so this month we would like to have an opportunity to share with you more of our Ragtime works and an expanded In Search Of article about Ragtime . If you have read that original article, be sure to revisit it as we have added more in-depth definition of the genre, expanded the history, added some musical examples and refined the Scott Joplin biography information. We have a great deal of tremendous music to present you this month and are expanding our feature to include a lucky thirteen songs rather than our usual ten to accommodate all the wonderful ragtime music. In addition, you will find two others in our Ragtime, In Search Of article. So, sit back, get your Scorch player revved up and enjoy a summer picnic of ragtime music from the past masters of piano rags and rag songs. IMPORTANT NOTICE: WITH LYRICS ! The archive documents early recorded jazz and in particular the lives of notable jazz musicians from the St. Louis area. The John Randolph Collection, with approximately 10,500 78-rpm records, provided the basis of the archive's record collection. Today there are more than 20,000 records in the archive. A group of talented young musicians from the new England Conservatory of Music under the leadership of Gunther Schuller released an album on Angel Records that quickly became the biggest-selling classical album ever. It went on to win a Grammy for Best Chamber Music Performance of the Year A decade and a half later they came back with a collection of compositions spanning the century: classic rags from the pens of Scott Joplin and Joseph Lamb Jr themselves; works from the early days of “jass” by Jelly Roll Morton and Zez Confrey; brand new pieces by band members and other modern devotées. Nearly all of the original players from the group are on hand to bring an incredible seventeen years of dedicated “ragging” to this landmark recording!

King of Ragtime music Scott Joplin, the "King of Ragtime" music, was born near Linden, Texas on November 24, 1868. He moved with his family to Texarkana at the age of about seven. Even at this early age, Joplin demonstrated his extraordinary talent for music. Encouraged by his parents, he was already proficient on the banjo, and was beginning to play the piano. By age eleven and under the tutelage of Julius Weiss, he was learning the finer points of harmony and style. As a teenager, he worked as a dance musician. After several years as an itinerant pianist playing in saloons and brothels throughout the Midwest, he settled in St. Louis about 1890. There he studied and led in the development of a music genre now known as ragtimea unique blend of European classical styles combined with African American harmony and rhythm. In 1893, Joplin played in sporting areas adjacent to the Colombian Exposition in Chicago, and the following year moved to Sedalia, Missouri. From there, he toured with his eight-member Texas Medley Quartette as far east as Syracuse, New York.
