22. GABBF-Ragtime May Be First American Music
The unevenness of the syncopation in ragtime music is what gives it its name, Berlin said. It is ``ragged music, hence, ragtime.

Ragtime may be first American music
By Jennifer Brummett
Staff Writer ``I learned so much about circus music last year, I thought I would come and learn about ragtime this year,'' said Edward Berlin, a speaker at the conference on American band history as he began the symposium. The remark was met with much laughter as author/scholar Berlin is recognized as an expert on ragtime music, the theme this year. Berlin, of New York, gave an overview of the musical genre. He has written a number of books about it and lectures extensively all over the country. Distilling it, ragtime is ``march music played in a special way,'' Berlin said. He said it was the ``purest manifestation of American music,'' and likely the first American music. It is punctuated by syncopated off beats that, in its heyday from 1896 to 1917, were associated with black American musicians. ``It's always connected with the march, even on piano,'' Berlin said. ``The typical rag is a close cousin of the march.'' America was undergoing a cultural inferiority complex when ragtime was popular, so newspapers would run stories saying the king of England or the czar of Russia liked ragtime music. Pianist Scott Kirby of New Orleans underscored Berlin's talk with musical accompaniment and illustration. His renditions of ``Maple Leaf Rag,'' ``My Coal Black Lady,'' a medley of John Philip Sousa marches, and ``American Beauty Rag'' were definitely crowd pleasers, all followed by emphatic rounds of applause.

Ragtime groupies in for a treat at conference
By Jennifer Brummett
Staff Writer All you ragtime junkies are in for a raggedy good time at this year's Great American Brass Band Festival Conference on American Band History. ``The Ragtime Era'' was chosen as this year's topic. An entertaining mood will dominate, explained program chair Frank Cipolla. ``They can enjoy it. They're not coming to take exams on turn-of-the-century bands. They are going to enjoy themselves and they are going to learn something.'' The topics for the band conference are carefully chosen each year and presented in a lively fashion, Cipolla said. ``Ragtime is such a listenable kind of music. They're not going to fall asleep when Dick Zimmerman (a conference performer/speaker) plays.'' Cipolla said ragtime is a very important segment of American music. ``Some people have called it one of the first (genres) of American music. It's a forerunner of jazz because it is a syncopated kind of music.'' The name ragtime describes the beat of the music. ``The time (of the music) was ragged. It's not even. It has this certain rhythm to it that is unique.'' Ragtime music began its rise to popularity before the turn of the century, around 1896, and continued its glory days through World War I, or about the time entertainer Scott Joplin died in 1917, Cipolla said. It faded into obscurity early in this century ``because jazz idioms really took over.''

Ragtime is an American musical genre, enjoying its peak popularity around the years . Ragtime is a dance form written in 2/4 or 4/4 time, and utilizing a walking bass , that is, the bass note played legato on the 1-3 beats with a staccato chord played on the 2-4 beats. Much ragtime is written in Sonata form , with four distinct themes and a modified first theme appearing in the work. Ragtime music is syncopated , with the melodic notes landing largely on the off-beats. The etymology of the word ragtime is not known with certainty. One theory is that the "ragged time" associated with the walking bass set against the melodic line gives the genre its name.
Historical context
Ragtime originated in African-American musical communities, in the late 19th century , and descended from the jigs and marches played by all-black bands common in all Northern cities with black populations (van der Merwe 1989, p.63). By the start of the

In 1894 he moved to Sedalia, Mo., and played second cornet in a local band. For the next two years Joplin toured with a vocal ensemble he had formed and made his first efforts at composing ragtime. When the group disbanded (1896), he returned to Sedalia, where he stayed about four years. During this time he studied music at George Smith College, an educational institution for blacks sponsored by the Methodist Church. In 1899, Joplin published the “Maple Leaf Rag,” and its success was instantaneous. However, his next two major efforts, a folk ballet titled

History 426, History of the United States, 1877-1916 An Introduction to American Cultural Expression during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era These pages are intended primarily to provide links to websites that present major patterns in cultural expression during the years from the end of the Civil War to the beginning of World War I. Each category begins with a brief overview of developments, followed by links. Music Just as with painting, many aspects of American music derived from European influences. In music, some of the European models then in vogue dictated attention to the music of the common people. Antonin Dvorz¡k, a prominent Czech composer, lived in New York City in the mid-1890s as director of the National Conservatory of Music. He urged his pupils to express the spirit of liberty and to draw upon folk music in their work, and he incorporated some African-American themes along with other American folk music into his ninth symphony, From the New World (1893), perhaps the most popular symphony composed in the United States. Charles Ives drew upon American folk themes in his early compositions, dating to the first years of the 20th century even though they were not performed until much later. Better known at the turn-of-the-century was a black composer who drew directly upon African American themes: Scott Joplin. Joplin, more than any other single person, is associated with ragtime, which became popular during the late 1890s and early 20th century. Born in Texarkana, Texas, in 1869, Joplin piano with a local German music teacher and traveled through the African-American communities from New Orleans to Chicago. As he traveled, he came into contact with ragtime music and he began to write his own. In 1899, he published

Precis You can click here for a sample (file is 19 Kb) of what the spreadsheet looks like. More detail We've come a long way since we started on this database project 5 years ago and posted our first version in 2001 ! This update contains 1,168 new titles gleaned from various sources and collections. A few (15) titles have been dropped out (duplications or we decided they didn't qualify after all). There are over 2,572 corrections (spellings, added dates or publishers, etc) and over 819 references (probably more like 1,100) to new MIDI renditions. We believe this is the most comprehensive "ragtime" listing available. Everything here is free; it is just data with no Nonsense (MIDI courtesy Rob Crausaz who, for all our benefits, has sequenced many less common tunes). There are no catches. It is our contribution to the ragtime community that has given, and continues to give, each of the contributors so much enjoyment. We hope this material will aid other interested parties to find tunes they would like to hear and that it will encourage players/sequencers to address some of the currently unpresented tunes. It is hopefully also a lead to sources of scores for performers. From this page you can download three files - the spreadsheet, the notes and the Watanabe folio list.

Ragtime music has several categories within the genre. According to John Edward Hasse in his book Ragtime: From the Top: "There are four main types of ragtime: (1) instrumental rags, (2) ragtime songs, (3) ragtime or syncopated waltzes, and (4) 'ragging' of classics and other preexisting pieces." Our online collection contains primarily instrumental rags and ragtime songs. We have included at least one example of each of the other types. For an example of a ragtime waltz, see Mandy's Ragtime Waltz . To view a classic that was "ragged," view Paderewski Rag : a travesty on Paderewski's celebrated menuet Many modern music critics consider only the piano rags to be true ragtime music but, in the contemporary days of ragtime music, much of the public preferred the ragtime song. In fact, many instrumental rags had words added to them and were republished as ragtime songs, and ragtime songs were also republished in instrumental versions. We have many examples of both the instrumental version and the song of the same title and have included both in this collection. For example
