187. Fergus Ragtime Weekend
The only annual ragtime event in Canada starts on the last Friday in September, and continues through Sunday with live performances at The Theatre on the Grand.
http://www.rtpress.com/ferg.htm
Fergus Ragtime Weekend
Once again, Ragtime Weekend comes to the country town of Fergus, Ontario. Starting the last Friday in September, and continuing through Sunday, this small Canadian town has a habit of going off-beat. It gets syncopated. The 300-capacity concert hall, known as The Theater on the Grand, is the centerpiece of the town. Here we see the main stage, equipped with a pair of concert grands, manned by Bob Milne and Sue Keller , who appeared solo, in duet, as well as with the ragtime quartet in a stage within the stage. Friday and Saturday night concerts were both sold out. The Royal City Saxophone Quartet features Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone saxophones. Band members Tim Hoher, Bradley Moggach, Peter Wendell, and Ernie Kalwa regularly appear in Guelph, Kitchener's Center in the Square, Ontario Place, as well as the duMaurier Downtown Jazz Festival in Toronto. Fergus Ragtime Weekend organizer, John Snowdon , is the artistic director of the Theater on the Grand. He relocated to Fergus from the bustling city of Toronto some 15 years ago and brought a little bit of culture with him. Sue and Bob at the Fergus Market. Somebody looks like they're just having too much fun!

190. The King Of Ragtime Guitar: Blind Blake & His Piano-Sounding Guitar
Article about life and work of the ragtime blues fingerpicker. By Jas Obrecht.
http://www.garlic.com/~tgracyk/blake1.htm
By Jas Obrecht During the mid 1920s, the unexpectedly strong sales of Blind Lemon Jefferson's Paramount 78s sent record scouts scrambling to sign male blues artists. One of their best discoveries was Blind Blake, a swinging, sophisticated guitarist whose warm, relaxed voice was a far cry from harsh country blues. Some of Blake's 78s cast him as swinging jazzman or jivey hipster, while others walked the long, lonely road to the gallows. The man with the "famous piano-sounding guitar" is still regarded as the unrivaled master of ragtime blues fingerpicking. "Lord have mercy, was he sophisticated!" says Jorma Kaukonen, who helped introduce Blake's guitar style to rock audiences during the '70s. "He would have been sophisticated in any era. I really like the completeness of his piano-style playing, his left- and right-hand moves. He could play a complete band arrangement by himself. That appealed to the lone-wolf mentality that I aspired to when I was learning his songs. Later on, it gave me depth for playing double-guitar and piano-guitar stuff with other people. It taught me a lot about putting music together." "Blind Blake is a great player, a great musical figure," echoes Ry Cooder. "In the years where he was on top, he was fabulous. Blind Blake just had a good touch. He played quietly, and he didn't hit the guitar too hard. He had a nice feeling for syncopation. He's from down there in the Geechie country, and all those people have a real nice roll to what they do. He was a hell of a good player, and he had a lick that was great. And Blind Blake played all over the place, with all kinds of people, including Johnny Dodds, which is just way too much for me."

191. Scott Joplin King Of Ragtime
Detailed biography of America's first great AfricanAmerican composer written by Charles K. Moss includes chronology of his piano compositions and many sound files.
http://www.carolinaclassical.com/joplin/index.html
by Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
Many details in the life of America's first great black composer remain uncertain. He was born in November of 1868, but the place of his birth in east Texas is a matter of some debate. However, regarding his ingenious piano works in the style known as Ragtime, it is undisputed that Scott Joplin created a place for himself among the great composers of piano music in Western culture. Joplin's syncopated musical style found expression in the popular idiom of piano Ragtime, a style that flourished along the Mississippi river in the closing decade of the Nineteenth Century and which endured as a prominent piano style until the end of World War I.
To this improvisational genre Joplin brought great artistry, craftsmanship, and elegance. His piano works influenced such great composers as Claude Debussy, and Joplin is claimed as an important contributor in both serious music and as an innovator in the development of piano Jazz. However, it is clear that Joplin himself considered his music to be in the classical tradition of Western art music since this was the music of his background and education.
Scott Joplin was the child of a former slave and a free-born black woman, Giles and Florence Givens Joplin, and he grew up in the town of Texarkana on the Texas-Arkansas border. He had few early educational opportunities, but his mother took an active interest in his education, and most members of his family played musical instruments. Julius Weiss, a German immigrant musician, taught the young Joplin and played a significant role in the formation of Joplin's artistic aspirations.
