Whitewater rafting can be a dangerous activity if the proper precautions are not taken. Below is a generally accepted classification system used to classify rivers for rafting and boating difficulty:
  • Class I - Easy. Fast moving water with riffles and small waves. Class II – Novice. Straightforward rapids with wide, clear channels. Class III - Intermediate. Strong eddies and current, requiring skilled maneuvering. Class IV - Advanced. Powerful but predictable rapids requiring precise boat handling in turbulent water. Class V - Expert. Long, obstructed, or violent rapids which expose paddlers to a high degree of danger, requiring expertise and reliable equipment for safe passage. Class VI - Unrunnable. Likelihood of death, or destruction of equipment in attempting class 6 runs.
As expertise increases, and equipment becomes more durable, or reliable, what was once considered class 6 becomes class "5 plus", and eventually class five. The

Background of the Sport
These are the human-powered versions of water sports. Kayaking is popular on both whitewater and lakes, and in coastal areas, sea kayaking is popular. Canoeing is popular on lakes, rivers, even on whitewater. Whitewater slalom kayaking and canoeing have been Olympic sports for several years. Rafting is usually reserved for fast-flowing rivers and whitewater experiences, where the raft provides an extra measure of safety and control, expecially for beginning watersport enthusiasts.
With a kayak, uou move using a double-bladed paddle. You reach forward with each blade and pull, twist your torso to reach and pull with the opposite blade, to balance the forces and keep your kayak moving forward. Kayaking is an excellent sport for building leg, abdominal, chest and back muscles. Rookies need to learn to moves: the "eskimo roll" to right the craft when you are inverted and submerged, and a "wet exit" to get out of the skirt while inverted.
Canoeing has evolved from the main means of transportation for Indians and early explorers and fur traders. Canoeing is a low-noise way to explore the area's beautiful and rugged geography, letting you get surprisingly close to wildlife on land, water or in the air. Canoeing is a great form of exercise, whether canoeing on a lake or canoeing downstream.

Public Lands and Recreation Areas
in Colorado
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administers some 8 million plus acres of public land in Colorado, governed by multi-use principles. Not part of any national forest or park, these federally owned lands offer unlimited recreation opportunities. The BLM divides Colorado into 11 Extensive Recreation Management Areas (RMAs). Most of these public lands are offered for use by recreationists with few restrictions. A limited number of more heavily used areas are identified by the BLM as Special RMAs (SRMAs). These areas of significant natural or historical resources are managed more intensively for the protection of those resources. Information about a particular SRMA can be obtained by contacting the Extensive RMA in which it falls. Special RMA's

Recreation on Dinosaur Diamond Prehistoric Byway
Send as postcard Out of Colorado National Monument (CO) Encompassing more than 500 miles of Byway, it is no wonder that Dinosaur Diamond is home to a wide variety of recreational opportunities. Along much of the route, you travel through desert; however, arresting mountain ranges are never far away. The mighty Green and Colorado Rivers run through the area of southeastern Utah and western Colorado, providing excellent rapids for rafters or spots for a morning or afternoon of fishing. Hiking, biking, hunting, and other activities are also available. Winter sports such as snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing are popular with visitors. Some anglers seek out Dinosaur Diamond's high country for a bit of ice fishing. Rafting on the Green River River rafting is one of the most popular recreational pursuits along the Byway. Both calm water and whitewater river trips are available through rafting companies based in Vernal, UT, Moab, UT, Green River, UT, and Grand Junction, CO. The whitewater rapids of the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument or the Colorado River in Cataract Canyons challenge and frighten even the most experienced of river runners during the high water levels of spring melt. Some stretched along the Green and the Colorado Rivers have flatwater where visitors can enjoy exploring the river in canoes.

Reservations and Access to the Launch Site
Thank you for inquiring about Paddle Craft Reservations. There is a site just below the Hoover Dam where paddle craft such as, canoes, kayaks or personal rafts can be launched for an enjoyable trip down the river. The road leading to the launch site is in a sensitive security zone and access is limited to Bureau of Reclamation employees and their contractors. Therefore, if you have personal paddle craft that you want to take down the river, you must make arrangements with one of the authorized livery services to transport your craft to the launch site. Most livery services can also provide rental craft if desired. Reservations for launch permits are now handled by Black Canyon/Willow Beach River Adventures (BC/WBRA), a National Park Service concessioner. They maintain an office within the Hacienda Hotel and can be contacted between 10:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The phone number is (702) 494-2204 for paddle craft reservations only. Their fax number is (702) 294-4464. BC/WBRA also provides raft trips down the river. The phone number for raft trips and other administrative information is (702) 294-1414.
