Lawmakers kill bill to regulate recreational water use

DENVER - In a victory for Colorado's burgeoning river-running business, the state House on Tuesday killed a measure that would have limited the amount of water that can be set aside for kayaking, fishing and swimming.
"This will help save the whitewater industry," said Chaffee County Commissioner Jerry Mallett, spokesman for a coalition that fought the bill.
The bill would have limited future whitewater courses and other river-based recreational parks to 350 cubic feet of water per second when water supplies are low.
Proponents said the measure was necessary to keep whitewater parks in a few small towns from hogging water that agriculture - the state's largest industry - might need. Opponents said the bill was an attempt by farmers and ranchers to squeeze out the whitewater business. "They are the new kid on the block. They need more water than the historical flow. They need two, three or four times the water allowed in that bill," said Kent Vertrees, a Steamboat Springs outfitter who offers fishing, rafting and tubing trips.

Rafting Group Event proves fun for all
Shouts of “YAAAAH-HOOOOO” filled the air during a recent river rafting trip on the Wenatchee River. This Group Event was customized to meet the needs of students with disabilities from New Horizon School. More than two dozen participants with disabilities, family members, SKIFORALL staff and River Riders staff enjoyed the great weather, fellowship and fun that comes from a trip down the Wenatchee River. This Group Event, managed by program directors Randee Young and Noelle Blazevich, was possible in large part due to the terrific support from River Riders, a rafting guide program based from Leavenworth, Washington. The following email exchange captures the meaningful fun that not only the participants had while rafting, but also our partners from River Riders: dave@camstraps.com

White water rafting
Whitewater Rafting can be recreational or competitive, using the same water facilities as Slalom and Wild Water Racing. It is generally a fun activity for 1-2 to 12 person craft and it is an opportunity to give an exciting experience of white water in comparative safety.
The BCU facility development objective for Whitewater Rafting is:
Encourage access for Whitewater Rafting recreation at named facilities.
Whitewater Rafting Facility Framework
No national level facility is required.
Whitewater Rafting is seen largely as a feeder activity for other disciplines in paddle sport and is important to the BCU for that reason.
Whitewater rafting will use the whitewater facility proposed by the other disciplines to serve the London, South East and Southern regions.
