Radio Communication
In contrast to conventional combat radios with fixed architecture, our new digital software defined radio generation - like (Multimode Multirole Multiband radio and Tactical Radio) - feature maximum flexibility in terms of frequency bands, waveforms and functions.
As solution for multiband radio the M3TR transceiver family covers the whole spectrum from shortwave through to the UHF band. "Multimode" means, that thanks to optimized protocols and waveforms M3TR can achieve high data rates of up to 64 kbit/s in the VHF, UHF band. This digital software defined radio offers comprehensive multirole features allowing its easy integration into tactical radio and communication networks.
M3TR (Multimode Multirole Multiband radio and Tactical Radio) is not restricted to use in strictly military networks: by loading the appropriate software the transceivers can be used as terminals in civilian PMR networks.

Overview In this section you'll find information about Radio Communication and the Phonetic Alphabet
Radio Communication
The single, most important thought in pilot-controller communications is understanding. Radio communication is part of the flight training for FAA pilot certificates and it is also examined during the practical phase of your flight check. The FAA does not require an additional license for radio communication as other countries do.
However some foreign countries do issue a restricted radio license to persons holding a FAA pilot certificate.
You'll get more detailed information from your local aviation administration office or from the agency regulating radio communications in your country where you reside. Read also the article Talking on the Radio
Phonetic Alphabet
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) phonetic alphabet is used by Air Traffic Control (ATC) and pilots through out the world for radio communications.

Spectrum Shift Threatens Radio Communication
Area Emergency Workers Seek Fixes for Cross-Border Contact
By Jonathan Abel Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, July 11, 2005; Page B07 Emergency responders cross county lines every day in the greater Washington region, and their radios go along, too. But some emergency communications officials fear that a reshuffling of the radio spectrum will threaten their ability to communicate across borders. In the late 1990s, police and fire agencies started to notice interference on their radio channels from such commercial users as Nextel. In response, the Federal Communications Commission decided last year to authorize a nationwide swap in which public safety frequencies would move to the lower end of the 800-megahertz band and commercial users would move to the higher end. This three-year, $4.9 billion project began June 27 and will be paid for by Nextel.
Free E-mail Newsletters
The project involves moving thousands of police and fire radio systems to new frequencies, and Tony Rose, Charles County's emergency communication chief, worries that in the short term it will cripple the ability of emergency responders to talk across borders.

Outback Communications
Contents of this page The vastness of Australia's outback requires particular long distance communications suitable for four-wheel drivers who may wish to have radio contact for emergency/safety use. The page provides a general introduction to the aspects of communication for fourwheel drivers and travellers in remote parts of Australia. Please note the at the bottom of the page. Further information sources can be found at the bottom of this page.
Citizen Band radios
While CB (citizen band radio service) radios, either UHF or 27Mhz are suitable for convoy use they are unreliable for long distance. Non-marine CB's do not require a licence for use in Australia, but conditions for use do apply, for example covering maximum power output. Refer to ACA Fact Sheet FSC20 Citizen Band Radio Ref UHF is generally suitable to about 8 kilometres, often line of site only. UHF radios are the most common used amongst farmers, truckers, and fourwheel drivers these days. For UHF, the truckie channel is 40, while 4WD Association members have agreed on 10. General call channel is 11 - move to another channel once contact is established. UHF channels 5/35 are restricted for emergency calls only - there are organisations that voluntarily monitor the emergency channels. While there are many repeater stations around Australia for UHF CB radios, this does not extend to the remote outback areas.

Bayonne, NJ Dedicated May 1987 - IEEE North Jersey Section In 1933, the police department in Bayonne, New Jersey initiated regular two-way communications with its patrol cars, a major advance over previous one-way systems. The very high frequency system developed by radio engineer Frank A. Gunther and station operator Vincent J. Doyle placed transmitters in patrol cars to enable patrolmen to communicate with headquarters and other cars instead of just receiving calls. Two-way police radio became standard throughout the country following the success of the Bayonne system. In March 1933, the first two-way AM mobile radio was installed in a patrol car of the Bayonne Police Department. The system was designed by Lieutenant Vincent J. Doyle of the Bayonne Police and radio engineer Frank Gunther. Through the use of a combined transmitter and receiver in the patrol car, the two-way system allowed communication between patrol cars and with the police station. The Bayonne system was developed less than five years after the deployment of the one-way AM mobile-radio system by the Detroit Police Department. On April 7, 1928, the Detroit Police commenced regular one-way radio communication with its patrol cars, using a system developed by Patrolman Kenneth Cox and Robert L. Batts, an engineering student. This system proved the practicality of land-mobile radio for police work and led to its adoption throughout the county.

Hartford, CT Dedicated June 1987 - IEEE Connecticut Section A major advance in police radio occurred in 1940 when the Connecticut state police began operating a two-way, frequency modulated (FM) system in Hartford. The statewide system developed by Daniel E. Noble of the University of Connecticut and engineers at the Fred M. Link Company greatly reduced static, the main problem of the amplitude modulated (AM) system. FM mobile radio became standard throughout the country following the success of the Connecticut system.
