Welcome to Julian Sortland's HomePage!
Velkommen! Hilsen fra Hornsby Heights i Australia. Yep, it's me. This was taken by Kris P , at Asquith Boys', using a digital camera. Greetings from sunny downtown Hornsby Heights, in northern Sydney, NSW, Australia. I enjoy Electronics, Amateur Radio, Photography and playing around with computers / Internet. My amateur callsign is VK2YJS. My main interests are 6m, 2m, 70 cm and 23cm FM voice. I occasionally use 2m SSB. The all-important "smoke" got out of my 10m set, so might be a while before I am back to 10m FM. I should do more packet . For this I use Baycom and a home-built modem on 2m. I am a member of NZART , New Zealand Association of Radio Transmitters; the ARRL , The American Radio Relay League; and HADARC , the Hornsby and Districts Amateur Radio Club. I'm a member of WICEN NSW Inc , previously called the Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network. This is an organisation of trained volunteers who use amateur radio and other resources to provide communications support to other emergency services during disasters. WICEN also provides communications for many community and sporting events. WICEN has been activated for a number of recent disasters. I've written a guide to Broadcasts in English which can be heard in Europe using an "ordinary" mediumwave or "AM" radio.

Don Cassel VE3BUC Welcome to the Mediumwave (MW) and Shortwave Listeners (SWL) DX page. DX refers to listening to distant signals and many who follow this hobby find it challenging, exciting, and rewarding. Initially this page will introduce newcomers to the hobby so if you have been thinking about starting into DXing then you are in for a treat. DXing is easy to begin and need not be expensive. In fact you can begin with just about any radio that you have around the house or in the car. Unlike Amateur (Ham) Radio you don't need a license, no test is required and you can start at any age. In fact many Hams (including the author, VE3BUC) started with Mediumwave or Shortwave listening. In this section we will give you listening tips, how to find the rare ones, and how to submit reception reports and receive QSL cards from stations you have heard. So read on and have fun! Click the navigation arrow buttons on each page to proceed through each topic.

The Hallicrafters SX-111 was built from 1959-1962. This near mint condition unit came from the TRW ham swapmeet in the Los Angeles area and included an R-46A speaker. The Hallicrafters SX-62A General Coverage Receiver was introduced in 1950 and continued production until 1955. This unit including R-46B speaker was found wrapped in plastic in the garage of a former SWL. After alignment and dial cord restringing it works and looks like new. The SX-122 by The Hallicrafters Co. arrived on the SWL scene in 1955. This single conversion receiver covers 538kc-54mc and has bandspread tuning on the 80m - 10m amateur bands. An example of Hallicrafters distinctive Double Half Moon design, this unit came from the January 1999 SCARF meet in Valencia, CA. The NC-300 by the National Radio CO. was built from 1955-1958.Coverage is provided for the 160m thru 10m HF bands as well as 6m, 2m, and 1 1/4m bands when optional transverters are used. This very clean unit came from the SCARF antique radio swapmeet in Valencia, CA. in August, 1998.
