Amateur Radio Propagation Studies Science, research, engineering, operating Double hop sporadic E propagation Editor's notes In recent weeks and months, the VHF ham radio scene was quite active in various aspects. Several sporadic E events have provided attractive band openings, accompanied by Aurora and also by FAI openings, the ping kings were busy with the Perseids meteor shower in August and the community of moonbouncers is active at all times anyway. The 2005 sporadic E season has in particular given another example of 144 MHz long distance propagation between the Canary Islands and central Europe which is analyed here (alternative examples of double hop Es in 2005 are still under investigation). The longest distances, however, result from tropospheric radio propagation from Ireland and England towards the west coast of Africa breaking the IARU Region 1 tropo record which is very impressive. The 'thunderstorm project' is making progress too, see the actual status report. Our results were presented at the CAL conference and we received valuable information from the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK.
Volker (DF5AI)
More examples of 144 MHz QSOs between the Canary Islands and central Europe Since 2003 we keep an eye on 144 MHz long distance QSOs between the Canary Islands and central Europe (path lengths around 3.500 km). Interpreting those QSOs by double hop sporadic E propagation, some sort of ground reflection must exist along the radiowaves' zigzag path between ground and the E region of the ionosphere. Calculating the geographical center of the QSOs, the reflection points are found on the Iberian peninsula. Referring to the latest issue of the

VNA project wins developers the 2004 Doug DeMaw, W1FB, Technical Excellence Award
Three radio amateurs were honored as recipients of the 2004 Doug DeMaw, W1FB, Technical Excellence Award. Created to honor the late Doug DeMaw, W1FBone of the most widely published technical authors in Amateur Radio historythe award is bestowed upon the author or authors of the best QST or QEX technical article during the prior year, as judged by the ARRL Technical Advisor group. DeMaw was the ARRL Technical Department Manager and Senior Technical Editor from 1970 to 1983. For the best of 2004, the voting ended in a tie between the collaboration of Tom McDermott, N5EG, and Karl Ireland for their article "A Low-Cost 100 MHz Vector Network Analyzer with USB Interface," in July/August QEX, and Jack Belrose, VE2CV, for his article "On the Quest for an Ideal Antenna Tuner," in October QST. Accordingly, the ARRL bestowed the Technical Excellence Award on both articles and their authors.
