Almost a half-century ago, Joe Sobek, frustrated that he could not find an indoor racquet sport he liked, designed a new racquet, found a ball of the right size and spring, and invented racquetball. The sport now has 8 million players in the United States, 9 million worldwide, played in 91 nations, with a World professional tour . It is part of the quadrennial Pan American Games , and the international federation is trying to have it added to the 2004 Olympics in Athens. History
During the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, representatives of several Latin-American countries proposed a kind of regional Olympics for all of the Americas. The Central American Games were already in existence, having been hosted by Mexico in 1926 and by Cuba in 1930. In 1938, the Central American Games expanded in scope, becoming the Central American and Caribbean Games, and the idea of international sports competition also embracing North America was revived after being on hold for six years. As a result, the Pan American Sports Congress was founded at Buenos Aires, Argentina, in August of 1940 and delegates agreed that Buenos Aires should host the first Pan American Games in 1942. That didn't happen because of World War II, but the Pan American Sports Congress met again during the 1948 Olympics in London and revived the idea. Buenos Aires finally hosted the first Pan American Games, which opened on February 25, 1951. The 21 countries that took part were represented by 2,513 athletes competing in 18 sports. The organizing body was renamed the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) in 1955, when the games were held in Mexico City. Canada competed for the first time, bringing the total number of countries to 22. There are currently 42 countries from North, South, and Central America and the Caribbean in PASO, which is headquartered in Mexico City. More than 5,000 athletes have participated at each Pan American Games since 1995.

The United States Junior Racquetball Association named Knoth its 2004 male athlete of the year during the national Junior Olympic Racquetball Championships, held June 22-26 at the Multnomah Athletic Club.
Taylor Knoff has certainly earned the honor on the performance side. In 2003 and in 2004 he was part of six national championships in the 12-and-under division: singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
The top two national placers in each age division become members of the United States National Junior Team, and they get to represent the United States at the Junior World Championships. Knoff has already been to the Junior World Championships four times.
Taylor Knoff has a lot going for him in his quest to become a professional.
Taylor plans to play basketball, baseball and racquetball as a freshman at La Salle High School during the next school year.

A complete Summary of the database contents is also available. The Bibliography Project research team credits can be viewed as well. Welcome
from Dr. Louis Grivetti, the project's compiler:
This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.
