n. A game played on a four-walled handball court by two or four players with short-handled rackets and a hollow rubber ball 2 inches (5.7 centimeters) in diameter.
var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia racquetball, sport played indoors by two or four players, combining elements of court handball and such racket games as squash racquets . It is played on a standard handball court 40 ft (12.2 m) long, 20 ft (6.1 m) wide, and 20 ft high, with a back wall at least 12 ft (3.6 m) high. The fiber-strung racket is attached to the player's wrist with a thong, and the ball is slightly larger and lighter than that used in handball. Racquetball was developed in the early 1950s and enjoyed a boom in popularity throughout the United States in the 1970s. The United States Racquetball Association holds annual singles and doubles championships. WordNet Note: click on a word meaning below to see its connections and related words.

Billiards and others lobby for spot at 2004 Olympics
Click here for more on this story Posted: Friday December 10, 1999 12:58 PM LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) An Olympic gold medal for parachuting? That's one of the scenarios being contemplated by the International Olympic Committee as it considers possible new sports for the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece. The IOC said Thursday it has received requests from more than a dozen recognized sports federations to be added to the Olympic program in Athens. The list includes parachuting, billiards, underwater swimming, roller skating and surfing. There are also several sports that have been lobbying for years: golf, ballroom dancing, bowling, rugby, squash and racquetball. And then there's the sport that is considered the favorite for becoming a new medal event in Athens: water skiing.

Unlike many other racquet sports, the walls, floor, and even ceiling of the racquetball court are considered in-bounds. The game is normally played by two players, though there are variations with three or even four (which can get very crowded). Two player games are called singles, three player games are typically called trips or cut-throat, and four player games are called doubles.
History
Joe Sobek is credited with invented racquetball, though not naming the sport. Sobeck, a tennis pro and handball player was looking for a fast paced sport that was easy to learn and play. He designed the first strung paddle, devised a set of rules based on those from squash and handball and named his game, "paddle rackets". In 1952, Sobek founded the National Paddle Rackets Association, codified the rules, and had rules booklets printed.
