Racquetball Time Line
The game of racquetball evolved from other racket sports such as French Court Tennis and Spanish Jai Alai in the 17th century, the British game of Rackets played in the early 1800s, English Squash in the 1850s, and Irish immigrants’ introduction of Handball to the United States in the 1900s. The evolution of these various racket sports lead inevitably to Racquetball in the 1950s. Joe Sobek invents racquetball in Greenwich, Connecticut.
He designs a ‘strung paddle racket,’ combines the rules of handball and squash
and calls his variation ‘paddle rackets.’ The sport gains a following among cross over handball enthusiasts.
Robert Kendler
, president of the U.S. Handball Association,
takes an interest in the game, both as a player and a promoter. Increasing popularity of the game attracts new players in all age groups.
Administrative structure begins to evolve. The First Gut Strung Paddle Rackets National Championship
held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

History
During the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, representatives of several Latin-American countries proposed a kind of regional Olympics for all of the Americas. The Central American Games were already in existence, having been hosted by Mexico in 1926 and by Cuba in 1930. In 1938, the Central American Games expanded in scope, becoming the Central American and Caribbean Games, and the idea of international sports competition also embracing North America was revived after being on hold for six years. As a result, the Pan American Sports Congress was founded at Buenos Aires, Argentina, in August of 1940 and delegates agreed that Buenos Aires should host the first Pan American Games in 1942. That didn't happen because of World War II, but the Pan American Sports Congress met again during the 1948 Olympics in London and revived the idea. Buenos Aires finally hosted the first Pan American Games, which opened on February 25, 1951. The 21 countries that took part were represented by 2,513 athletes competing in 18 sports. The organizing body was renamed the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) in 1955, when the games were held in Mexico City. Canada competed for the first time, bringing the total number of countries to 22. There are currently 42 countries from North, South, and Central America and the Caribbean in PASO, which is headquartered in Mexico City. More than 5,000 athletes have participated at each Pan American Games since 1995.

Unlike many other racquet sports, the walls, floor, and even ceiling of the racquetball court are considered in-bounds. The game is normally played by two players, though there are variations with three or even four (which can get very crowded). Two player games are called singles, three player games are typically called trips or cut-throat, and four player games are called doubles.
History
Joe Sobek is credited with invented racquetball, though not naming the sport. Sobeck, a tennis pro and handball player was looking for a fast paced sport that was easy to learn and play. He designed the first strung paddle, devised a set of rules based on those from squash and handball and named his game, "paddle rackets". In 1952, Sobek founded the National Paddle Rackets Association, codified the rules, and had rules booklets printed.

A few years back, I posted an article about how racquetball will eventually
move from "racquetball clubs" with many courts to "Multi-Fitness Mega-Clubs"
facilities with just a few courts, but lots of different activities and
thousands of memberships. I also mentioned that the trend for many clubs may be towards "programs" and
"family programs", including pre-school and youth programs, which allows
members more reasons to join and renew their memberships. Like a cross between

Karch Kiraly is to the sport of volleyball what these modern-day icons represent in their respective sports. “Having Karch Kiraly join the advisory staff of the Association of United Wallyball Players (AUWP), the official governing body of the sport of wallyball, is one of the crowning moments in the history of the sport,” states Joe Garcia, inventor of wallyball and executive eirector of the AUWP. “One of our primary goals is to develop a grass roots program to grow the sport. Karch also understands that the similarities the two sports enjoy - such as basic volleyball rules, ball handling techniques and the availability of wallyball/racquetball courts - can help both sports work together more effectively to attract new players and help them improve their skills.” Wallyball is a version of volleyball played on a racquetball court with two, three or four players per team. Play and scoring are similar to volleyball; however, the side walls become part of the playing area and contacting two or more walls constitutes a fault or side-out. There are several million players worldwide who play wallyball in health clubs, YMCAs, and college intramural programs.

It's hard to believe that when Kimpton Hotels bought the property in 1989, the building included 400 rooms with bunk beds and one shared bath per floor (the hotel now offers 131 guestrooms - all with private baths). It's also hard to believe the stunning difference a day makes: Three months after Kimpton Hotels bought the building, the Loma Prieta earthquake sent the elevated freeway behind the hotel tumbling. The resulting demolition and removal gave the hotel the best views of the Bay in the city.

In 1985, Representative William Mullins of Ludlow, then the Vice Chairmen of the House Ways and Means Committee, concluded that UMass Amherst, as the flagship campus of the University system, lacked an indoor facility of sufficient size for major sports and other events. After studying the needs of the region and the campus, Representative Mullins believed that a multi-purpose sports and convocation center was essential to the University’s growth. He enlisted the support of campus officials and legislative leaders and began building the momentum to fund the construction of this type of facility. Representative Mullins Died in 1986. Several of his colleagues in the legislature, as well as other supporters, carried on his commitment to this project. As a tribute to Representative Mullins’ dedication to higher education and his deep interest in athletics in general and the UMass sports program in particular, the facility was named in his memory.
