Racism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A black man drinks out of a water fountain designated for black people in 1939 at a streetcar terminal. Racism refers to beliefs and practices: (1) that assume inherent and significant differences exist between the genetics of various groups of human beings; (2) that assume these differences can be measured on a scale of "superior" to "inferior"; and (3) that result in the social, political and economic advantage of one group in relation to others. The following discussion identifies racism at the level of individual prejudice, social practice, and institutional structure, depending on the viewpoint of the contributor. In general the racist's own race is considered the most valuable and others less valuable. The belief that the character and abilities of individuals are correlated with their race is not necessarily racism, since this can be asserted without implying an inequality in value. The application of this belief in dealing with members of that race, especially with little regard for variations within "races", is known as racial prejudice . Granting or withholding rights or privileges based on race or refusing to associate with persons based on race is racial discrimination Racism has historically been defined as the belief that race is the primary determinant of human capacities, that a certain race is inherently superior or inferior to others, and/or that individuals should be treated differently according to their racial designation. IN MEMORY OF STANDING DEER WITH EVERLASTING LOVE We have tragic news for all of you who loved Standing Deer. On January 20, 2003, Standing Deer crossed over to the Spirit World. We will miss his laughter, sharp wit and beautiful smile, but for many of us he still remains by our side. I have displayed on this page a compilation of photos he gave me since his release on September 4, 2001. For those of you who did not know him, I know you will come to see his beauty as much as all of us who travelled on the road beside him throughout the years.

Racism delegate: Some progress, but more needed
McDougall DURBAN, South Africa (CNN) Officials representing governments around the world including Cuban leader Fidel Castro and several African heads of state gathered in Durban, South Africa, this week for a United Nations anti-racism conference. Gay McDougall, a human rights advocate and member of the U.N. Committee for the Elimination of Racism, talked Saturday with CNN's Donna Kelley about racism worldwide, the Durban conference and her project, in particular. MCDOUGALL: We have chosen, through a massive outreach operation, 24 individuals from every region of the world to talk about their personal experiences of racial discrimination. They are articulate people who are here to give voice to some very compelling and inspiring stories. KELLEY: Tell us a couple of those stories.
