Undoing Racism
Training conducted at W. Palm Bch, Florida April 4-6, 2000 by
People United for Survial and Beyond

Notes taken by John Little
Society is built on a race construct. There is no quick fix. We have to find a support base for change. Part of the answer is to recognize it and say it.
The neighborhoods where poor people live are called by different names: ghetto, "hood", trailer park, the "projects". The people who live here have to interface with numerous institutions based outside their neighborhoods each and every day including employers, social service agencies, the police, schools, financial institutions, etc. These are the gatekeepers. Many of these are institutions built on a subtle racist construct. Working Definition of "Racism". The language used for the definitions of racism in the dictionaries will not allow us a way to undo it. We need a self-serving working definition so that we can have a meaningful discussion. Here is our working definition racism = race prejudice plus power In other words, we are not talking about mere prejudice. Our working definition makes clear that our core institutions in American society (i.e. "power") were built on a subtle yet real racial construct that results in giving people with white skin an inherent advantage over people of color.

10 Quick Ways to Analyze Children's Books
for Racism and Sexism
from The Council on Interracial Books for Children
Both in school and out children are exposed to racist and sexist attitudes. These attitudes - expressed over and over in books and other media - gradually distort their perceptions until stereotypes and myths about minorities and women are accepted as reality. It is difficult for a librarian or teacher to convince children to question society's attitudes. But if a child can be shown how to detect racism and sexism in a book, the child can proceed to transfer the perception to wider areas. The following ten guidelines are offered as a starting point in evaluation children's books from this perspective. 1. Check the Illustrations Look for Stereotypes . A stereotype is an over-simplified generalization about a particular group, race or sex, which usually carries derogatory implications. Some infamous (overt) stereotypes of blacks are the happy-go-lucky, watermelon-eating Sambo and the fat, eye-rolling "mammy"; of Chicanos, the sombrero-wearing peon or fiesta-loving, macho bandito; of Asian Americans, the inscrutable, slant-eyed "Oriental"; of Native Americans, the naked savage or "primitive brave" and his "squaw"; of Puerto Ricans, the switchblade-toting teenage gang member; of women, the completely domesticated mother, the demure, doll-loving little girl or the wicked stepmother. While you may not always find stereotypes in the blatant forms described, look for variations which in any way demean or ridicule characters because of their race or sex.

E-Journal Why Zionism Is Racism Zionism is a racist and irredeemable movement, like Bolshevism, Nazism, and Apartheid. By Rabee' Sahyoun
Posted: 11 Rabi-u-Thani 1422, 3 July 2001 (Note: This article is a direct response, using the same format, on a line by line basis, to an editorial that appeared in the Montreal Gazette on April 26, 2001, written by Gil Troy, a Professor of History at McGill University.) On this, the 53rd anniversary of the Nakbe' (the Catastrophe of the Palestinian people), it is all too tempting for friend and foe alike to define Israel, and zionism, solely by the Americans' proclamations of its enlightened democracy. To do so is to miss the normal atrocities that occur in Israel daily, the millions who are under curfew and blockade, starving and brutalized, in the Middle East's only colonized state. To do so is to feign the reality of zionism, a racist and irredeemable movement, that survived the twentieth centuries' other genocidal and seemingly passing revolutions such as Bolshevism, Nazism, and Apartheid.

Irish Travellers
In Ireland Travellers bare the brunt of both state racism and individual racism. This article explains who Travellers are and how racism against them can be fought while this one looks at Travellers demands for decent halting sites . Racism against Travellers is not even recognised as such, here we look at a particularly extreme example of media racism by Ireland largest circulation paper.
Fascism
The first years of the 1990's saw an apparent resurgence of European fascism . This article surveys this and looks at its causes. But in looking at the 90's resurgence it is important to see how it differs from the 1930's and to recognise that it is state backed racism rather then big business that's fuelling the fascists this time around. In the aftermath of forcing fascist organiser and Holocaust denier David Irving to cancel an Irish speaking tour this talk looks at tactics that can be used to defeat the fascists.

"The Jews have a self-chosen ghetto in Berlin around Grenadier and Dragoner Streets. Only the height of its buildings separate it from his Eastern models. It's the genuine article: the same unpleasant creatures, the same Hebraic shop signs, the same masses of playing children, the same bad smells and piles of filth." German Newspaper - 1930's "Newham, in the East End of London, is the tuberculosis capital of the western world. Its TB rate is double that of India. How, you might ask could this be allowed to happen when the deadly disease had been all but eradicated in this country? The increase of asylum seeking and immigration into our already overcrowded cities has reintroduced a disease commonly known as 'the white plague' endangering the lives of thousands in the process." 192. Racism, Intelligence And The Working Class
It is no exaggeration to say that racism is the cutting edge of a very sharp attack on the racism like this divides and weakens the whole working class!
http://www.plp.org/pamphlets/riwc.html
Racism, Intelligence and the Working Class
(4th Edition, February 1995) published by the PROGRESSIVE LABOR PARTY In the fall of 1994, the newsletter of the Los Angeles chapter of Mensa (an organization for people with high IQs) published an article calling for the sterilization of individuals with low IQs. This open advocacy of Nazi-style fascism coincided with the outrageous anti-immigrant racism centered on California's notorious Proposition 187. In the wake of Prop. 187, organizers had also begun to push the so-called "California Civil Rights Initiative." This would bar affirmative action programs for women and minorities in all state government jobs, contracts, and schools. Nationally, Democrats and Republicans alike were converging on a plan for "welfare reform." This campaign justified brutal cutbacks in vital services by using vile racist and sexist stereotypes of black women having "too many babies." The pending welfare bill would make recipients work 35 hours per week for their checks, at a median wage of $2.43 an hour. In the wake of Prop. 187, employers slashed wages in garment and other California industries based on immigrant labor. Prisoners in the US are increasingly serving as virtually slave labor, sometimes even for private enterprises. "Three strikes and you're out" will swell their ranks. These measures all justified by racism drive down wages across the board. It is no exaggeration to say that racism is the cutting edge of a very sharp attack on the lives and livelihoods of the entire working class

Battle for racism talks compromise
DURBAN, South Africa Delegates to a U.N. conference were continuing to battle to meet a deadline to resolve a row over the Middle East that could trigger an EU walk-out. Belgium, which has the European Union presidency, denied at the conference that the deadline set by the EU was an ultimatum. But a French government official warned in Paris on Wednesday that the 15 states could pull out within hours if wording branding Israel as a racist state were not removed from draft documents. The EU had given hosts South Africa until Wednesday night to broker a deal with Arab states demanding Israel be condemned for its treatment of Palestinians in the occupied territories the issue that has already prompted a pull-out by the United States and Israel.
