Edward "Eddie" Vernon Rickenbacker
Eddie Rickenbacker was born October 8, 1890, in Columbus, Ohio. With little formal schooling and a succession of jobs behind that, he began working for a railroad car manufacturing firm in 1905. There he developed a deep interest in internal-combustion engines and engine-powered vehicles. He began driving racing cars at sixteen (he became a regular at the Indianapolis 500 from its first year, 1911). By the time the United States entered World War I he was internationally famous as a daredevil speed driver and held a world speed record of 134 miles per hour. His Fighting the Flying Circus From Webster's American Military Biographies *An interesting item about his ordeal in the Pacific after his plane was ditchedat the time, a newspaper account mentioned that a gull landed on his head while he and his men were afloat. He grabbed its legs and the men were provided an addition to their meager diet.

Fast Women: The Ladies Of Auto Racing Racerchicks.com Remember those old history movies you'd watch in school? You know the ones that whined and skipped letting you catch a quick nap before biology class. Well THIS ISN'T ONE of them. Who would of thought the adjective entertaining can be said about a educational film! Well FAST WOMEN a documentary about women in racing stands on the podium in first place. It’s wonderful to hear from the mentors of yesterday and the racerchicks of today on their triumphs and tribulations. Heros such as Janet Guthrie, Shawna Robinson, Lyn St. James share their experiences - what draws them to this addicting sport. Rachel Belofsky’s production is excellent. What separates this film from any other documentary is as follows: 1) You will learn something.
2) Excellent footage – both historical and recent.
3) The women interviewed – including my hero Janet Guthrie have wonderful
tales to tell. They are genuine, intelligent, and fast driving women. They
speak from the heart.

DESIGN OF THIS SITE
OBJECT OF THIS SITE:
I have found that while there are lots of books about post war Grand Prix racing, there are, except for the hard to obtain Sheldon series, hardly any books nor any Internet sites that give a race by race account of the pre war Grand Prix races. Therefore I decided to make such a list myself for the benefit of all those who are interested in the era. The format of this site was influenced by Mike Lang's excellent book series: Grand Prix!
When I started making this home page my aim was to keep as high quality as I could. That has proved to be the right decision as some of the greatest experts of the Golden Era found the site interesting enough to make them spend their time assisting me with suggestions, corrections and further information. This contribution enabled me to develop this page to a quality that was beyond my wildest imagination when I started off with this home page.
The main object of this site was to give the reader a race-by-race account of Grand Prix and Voiturette racing during the period 1934-1940. Now I can add another object: To have the most correct information that can be found anywhere about the races from the era.
The site includes:
  • Starting lists, grids, race accounts and results for 65 major Grands Prix.

Background Honorary Member of the CMHF, despite his F1 drives Formula One is a very different kettle of fish these days compared to what it used to be like. Nowadays, it's a mega-professional, highly-organised sport (business?) with massive media coverage, where even backmarkers can be household names in their own countries. Gone are the days of one-off local entrants and weekend hacks, which is a shame, because many of them have provided some of the most interesting stories in Grand Prix history. Take Al Pease, for example. A Canadian from Darlington in England, on paper his Grand Prix career seemed more than pathetic, to the point some have dubbed him the 'worst ever' F1 driver. But they do not know the whole story: to the Canadian motorsport fraternity Pease is nothing short of a living legend, inducted as an Honorary Member of the 'Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame' in 1998. Joins British Motor Corp, driving MGs and minis with much success

Only now, with the FIA still embroiled in a war of words with the European Commission over their supposed F1 monopoly, is the world motorsport authority comtemplating to abandon Europe for sunnier regions of the world that possess more common sense and healthier wallets. It would be a drastic move that would create a stark contrast with the emphasis on Europe the leading championships of the world have had ever since the dawn of motor sports. Before the war the greatest championship up until that time was the AIACR European Championship that ran between 1935 and 1939 while after the war the World Championship has always concentrated around a long European summer season. By and large, what is called the FIA F1 World Championship has been a northern-hemisphere plaything.

IRVING, Texas (May 7, 2002) Exxon Mobil Corporation recently announced the reformulation of Mobil 1, the world's leading synthetic motor oil to include the new SuperSyn anti-wear system. Designed to give exceptional protection for engines in new, high performance cars as well as car engines with many years and miles of service, Mobil 1 with SuperSyn excels under extreme high-stress, high-temperature conditions, providing additional wear protection.
SuperSyn was developed by ExxonMobil researchers several years ago. It started on the race track, in response to requests from the drag-racing community where pressures and strains on an engine's moving parts are tremendous and engine failure is common. Using an experimental Mobil 1 SuperSyn formulation, the drag racers found that engine bearings and other lubricated parts were lasting longer.
Realizing that SuperSyn could add an extra element of protection to road-going passenger cars, ExxonMobil developed a new formulation of Mobil 1 which combines SuperSyn with a proprietary additive system. This is the 5th generation of Mobil 1 in its history.

This incredibly detailed study of the 'Silver Arrows' was originally published in Japan in 1997 but is now available in Europe. It tells the story of all of the factory Mercedes racers from W25 to 300SLR with a very informative text (if you read German!) and plenty of illustrations. Period photography is used throughout, some images being quite familiar, others less so but it is the huge quantity of excellent scale drawings that really make this interesting. All significant race variations are clearly shown and the detail includes different windscreen configurations for specific drivers. Most of these drawings are in profile, but where there are major nose or tail changes these too are clearly indicated. A must for the serious Mercedes modeller. German Text.
There appears to be no logic in the way that this series of very good driver biographies is released, it seems that their numbering of the series (Ascari is #2 and Lauda #9) is rather pointless but this may just be that they are being translated from their original French publications out of sequence.

    You just can't get enough!
Testing, that is. We're a fickle breed, race drivers. One minute I was feeling really overworked on the testing front last season, then come January I was getting withdrawal symptoms after being out of the cockpit for a few weeks... Testing is the vital key to your performance in an Fl car, and the pace of development is quite astonishing to people outside the sport. In a top team there is always something new. As Osamu Goto, head of Sauber Petronas Engineering says: "In Fl if you are not developing, you are standing still." And because of that you simply have to keep driving the car, to learn as much about it as you can, to discover its secrets, and to find new ways of making it go quickly. The time to do all this is during testing. You cannot do that sort of intensive experimental work at a race meeting, because then you've only got two days in which to prepare for a grand prix. Your tyres and laps are restricted, so you've really got to be focused. Testing is where you develop the car; by the time you get to a race meeting you are concentrating totally on setting it up for that specific track. On Friday you're really trying to find out what the track is like, and looking for a balance to the handling. On Friday morning the track is always "green". You usually aim to find a reasonable balance, something you can work with, by Friday afternoon. Then on Saturday morning, provided you've done reasonable times on Friday afternoon, you'll probably do a couple of runs with a reasonable fuel load, to find a datum for a race set-up, then towards the end you'll take the fuel out and hone your qualifying set-up. By then the track condition is usually about as good as it's going to get, and you have a better idea which tyres to opt for. On Sunday morning you work more on the race set-up, checking that you still have the balance.

    http://www.porsche964.co.uk/history/964bio.htm
By Adrian Streather – www.adrianstreather.com Aug 2003 This web site created by John Miles in May 2001 was the first exclusively devoted to the 964 series of Porsche 911s built between 1989 and 1994. It not only covers the 964 series but also 964 owners and their charges from around the world. John will happily acknowledge that this web site would not be anything like it is without the huge personal contribution of 964 owners around the world. I am very pleased to contribute this 964 Biography.
    The Porsche 911 (964 Series)
In the early years, the motoring press enthusiasm for this car was very positive and many times the 964 was proclaimed to be the best 911 ever, especially the revolutionary Carrera 4. As time passed however, praise began to turn to criticism, some of which still exists. One purpose and major driver behind John’s creation of this web site is to help overcome some of these myths and misconceptions of the 964. It must also be remembered that the 964 was born into a period of great stress and uncertainty at Zuffenhausen. Despite this over 57,000 964s were produced.
