US cyclist who, just eighteen months after returning to competition following a life-threatening battle against cancer, won the 1999 Tour de France. In 2002 he won his fourth consecutive Tour.
Career highlights
Tour de France: World Road Race Championship: Olympic Games: bronze 2000 Tour DuPont: Born in Plano, Texas, he showed early promise as a swimmer and triathlete, although when he left high school he was already a member of the US national cycling squad. He turned professional shortly after competing for the USA in the 1992 Olympic Games. In 1993, his first full season on the professional circuit, he gained his first stage victory in the Tour de France, and became only the second US cyclist after Greg LeMond to win the World Road Race title. Diagnosed as suffering from testicular cancer in October 1996, and given only a 50% chance of survival, he underwent chemotherapy and several operations before returning to racing early in 1998. In his 1998 comeback season he proved that he was still able to compete at the highest level, winning four races and achieving a top five finish in the Tour of Spain. His autobiography, It's Not About the Bike (2000), detailed his illness and subsequent recovery.

Died: February 18, 2001 Car Number: Team: Richard Childress Racing Sponsor: GM Goodwrench Service Plus Manufacturer: Chevrolet Biograph y There was never any doubt in Dale Earnhardt's mind about what he wanted to be in life. As a young boy watching his father Ralph race and win in Stock car events throughout the Southeast, Dale developed a love for the sport that would ultimately fuel one of the most successful careers in the history of motorsports. In his late teens, Dale began racing Hobby-class cars in and around his native Kannapolis, NC, working full-time by day, welding and mounting tires, and either racing or working on his cars by night. He financed his own effort, oftentimes having to borrow money to buy parts and pieces to run on the weekends, hoping to win enough to pay back the bank on Monday. In 1973, Ralph Earnhardt died of heart failure while working on his race car. Crushed by the loss, Dale eventually learned to cope by becoming more determined than ever to be successful as a driver. He continued to compete on the Sportsman circuit, racing at speedways near his home such as Hickory, Concord, and Metrolina Fairgrounds.

XIII Targa Florio (2 April 1922) Why? By 1922 motor racing had recovered from the effects of the first world war. In an effort to limit speed a new international formula had been introduced that changed the engine volume to 2 litres (from the earlier 3-litre formula). The French Grand Prix at Strasbourg and the Italian Grand Prix at Monza were both raced to the new formula and won by FIATs, the former by Felice Nazzaro and the latter by Pietro Bordino. However, it was the Targa Florio race in April, run to the free formula (Formula Libre), that perhaps proved to be the most interesting event of the year. It was the event that had the largest entry field of the year, it was the event where the German works teams and drivers made their definitive comeback to motor racing after the war, it was also the event where for the first time a supercharged engine was seen in Grand Prix racing and finally it was the event where two of the greatest legends of international motor racing met for the first time: Enzo Ferrari and Alfred Neubauer.

90. Rindt
Grand Prix drivers, at least the successful ones among them, The technologyof Grand Prix racing always penetrates into regions nearly no man has ever
http://www.research-racing.de/rindt.htm
JOCHEN LIVES The Legend of Jochen Rindt Tacitus (55-117 A.D.) Yes indeed, he had a dream. He had a dream of the overcoming of time and space, of the penetration into absolutely new spheres, of the development of different dimensions, and in 1970, one year after men had entered another planet for the first time, absolutely everything seemed to be possible. "I will possibly not reach the age of 40, but I will have experienced more things than any other man until that time," he once expressed both self-critical and self-confident, at the same time wise and with the regard of the future. And this life at the limits of human imagination ended after only 28 years. Within a fraction of a second. That was never unusual in this kind of sport, because there is a potential danger everywhere. This competition is based on speed and by that on the naked , cold elemental force - we have forgotten this fact when modern safety technology reduced this danger so dramatically. Later, when the Grand Prix became the home for Jochen Rindt, when he had married the Finnish model Nina Lincoln (whose ancestors come from Russia and Sweden and her father had been a well-known racing driver) and Rindt entered his last domicile at the Lake Geneva, his identity became a European one. The man with the intensive Graz dialect, founder of the Austrian glory in Formula One, only spoke English in his small family of his own. Indeed, Rindt was ever in demand for a lot of teams, he dominated Formula 2, this second great battle field for the world`s elite (where they met many highly qualified newcomers), only comparable to Fangio and Clark in Grand Prix racing. But he had got, absolutely wrong, the image of dealing extremely tough with the equipment, especially with the engines, and therefore being himself responsible for many retirements, as it was in the belief in some people and parts of the press. Roy Winkelmann, the Formula 2 boss, and Ron Dennis, Rindts mechanic at the Cooper and Brabham facilities, never shared this opinion, but they often had a lot to do with convincing certain journalists of the real facts.

95. Grand Prix Hall Of Fame - Bernd Rosemeyer - Biography
Rosemeyer was only the fourth man on the team but with the other drivers hobbled by After the race, Dr. Porsche went to the scene of Rosemeyer s drive
http://www.ddavid.com/formula1/rose_bio.htm
On the Frankfurt-Darmstadt autobahn, just beyond the Langen-Morfelden crossing and set back amongst the trees stands a monument to the great Rosemeyer. On the morning of the test Rosemeyer showed up wearing a suit! Asked by Walb why he was not wearing overalls Rosemeyer answered that "Well this is a special occasion for me - my premiere in a racing car - so I thought I'd dress for it." Walb did not know what to make of this impetuous driver but soon had an answer. The trial was at the daunting Nurburgring The 1935 season began but Rosemeyer had still not driven the car in battle. Walb considered him too inexperienced to drive at the Avus GP near Berlin. Caracciola , the greatest German driver in history, fought back to beat his new rival by 1.8 seconds. On the basis of this drive Rosemeyer was promoted to full time duty behind Stuck and Varzi. His next major race saw him involved in a duel with the greatest of them all, Tazio Nuvolari . At Pescara in Italy, he attempted to pass the Mantuan on the second lap but skidded off-course and burst both rear tires. He limped back to the pit but rather than being humbled by this he returned to the race to continue the attack. On the eighth lap his brakes sized before entering a corner and the car slid of the road, jumped a ditch and passed between a telegraph pole and the parapet of a bridge before re-emerging onto the circuit and back into the race. Rosemeyer eventually finished second behind his teammate Varzi on this most eventful afternoon.

96. Grand Prix Hall Of Fame - Colin Chapman - Biography
Several Lotus drivers won races only because they were in a Chapman car. But manyLotuses won races only because Clark was driving them.
http://www.ddavid.com/formula1/chap_bio.htm
Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman was born on 9 May, 1928 in a suburb of London. He grew up living at the Railway Hotel, Hornsey, which his father managed. One of the first significant events of Chapman's life occurred in March of 1944 when he met his future wife, Hazel Williams, at a dance. Even prior to their marriage ten years later she was to be instrumental in helping Chapman make a name for himself in racing and car building, among other things putting up the initial 25 pounds sterling to get Lotus Engineering Co., Ltd., started in 1952. Lotus cars, though intentionally built sparingly, were not gimcracks. Chapman, above all, wanted his cars to win. Their notorious frailty was no accident. Chapman was unswerving in his devotion to minimalist design philosophy. Each part had to do as many jobs as it was possible to squeeze out of it. Although this trade-off was not always adequate, when it did pay off it was dynamite. Chapman's motivation for this approach was apparently not parsimony, but something more deeply-seated in his personality. It is tempting to relate it to his tendency to treat superficially many of the people he had dealings with, but more likely it was just a manifestation of his extraordinary talents. What Chapman left out in material substance he replaced with cleverness. It was as if automobiles were to him ephemeral things, spirits of his own creation, or rather spirits formed by the act of their creation. Their physical existence seemed to have little importance. Only their performance was meaningful. It took great urging from friends and family before, late in life, he would make even belated efforts to preserve examples of some of his historically significant machines.

The extraordinary life of a motor racing legend who dominated the sport he loved for fifteen years until his near fatal crash...
Sir Stirling Craufurd Moss raced professionally over 500 times until his near fatal crash in 1962. At the end of his racing career he was the most famous Briton of his era - no footballer, jockey, boxer or pop star approached the national adulation that Moss received. Stirling Moss's tally of wins was proportionally higher than any other driver, ever. He was, during his colourful racing career, an extraordinarily gifted man.
For this book he has talked about his life in intimate detail to Robert Edwards: the bullying at school which helped him forge his early competitive spirit; the inheritance from both his parents of an uncanny ability to win; the personalities and momentous achievements of his racing ife; the crash and its agonising aftermath as he rebuilt his physical and mental health; the attempt to return to racing and his acknowledgement that his almost superhuman powers had been impaired; and the eventful ife he has led since then, never far from newspaper headlines and always held in the greatest affection.
