Description
  • Biography of the most colourful racing driver to emerge from Australia onto the international scene to become a works driver for Ford, Ferrari and Porsche all in the same season.
  • Australia has produced some outstanding racing drivers who have performed with great distinction on the world stage. But none has hit the headlines quite like Paul Hawkins, whose exploits on the race track were matched by his prowess for causing social mayhem out of the car and his often outrageous use of the English language, liberally seasoned with the Great Australian Adjective.
  • Hawkeye had an all-too-short yet highly successful driving career, his talent and versatility taking him from club racing in production cars through briefly into Formula One, but his exceptional speed and stamina brought him his greatest rewards in endurance and sports car racing, earning him factory drives with Ford, Ferrari and Porsche as well as international fame in his own or shared cars, before his career was cruelly brought to an end in a fiery accident at Oulton Park in 1969.

The Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race - biggest long-distance race of the year in Fairbanks.
[Yukon Quest 2000 Poster is by Illinois artist Susan T. Patton, whose family lives in Fairbanks. T-shirts and other items with it available at the Yukon Quest Store]
This over 1,000 mile race generally alternates directions each year between Fairbanks and Whitehorse, Canada (even numbered years leaving from Fairbanks, odd years from Whitehorse).
However, in 1998, the race went in the same direction as in 1997, starting in Whitehorse and finishing in Fairbanks approximately 10 to 12 days later. The direction, from Canada-to-Alaska, was chosen to commemorate the 1898 Gold Rush. In 1999 and 2000, 2002, and 2004 the race began in Fairbanks. The first race was in February of 1984 when 26 teams competed. Click hyperlink to go to information on the current year's race The Yukon Quest sells tickets to a raffle (prize, $10,000 in 2000). In 2004, the purse for the race itself was $125,000 to be shared by the top 15 finishers ($30,000 for the winner).

Jeff Green, Driver #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge Birth Date: September 6, 1962 Height: Weight: 190 lbs. Birthplace: Owensboro, Ky. Resides: Davidson, N.C. Wife: Michelle Growing up the youngest in an established racing family in an established racing town, Jeff Green was born with the genes and surroundings of what it takes to become a championship driver. Green, 41, is today one of the most successful drivers in NASCAR history. In 2005, Green again teams up with the most successful organization ever, Petty Enterprises, to drive the famed #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge. It will be his second full year driving for legendary owner, “The King” Richard Petty. Green has had racing on his mind, and in his blood, since birth. The youngest of three racing brothers, Green watched and learned from his siblings Mark and David. He was tutored by two of the best as both David and Mark’s careers are some of the most competitive the NASCAR Busch series has ever seen. Green, however, knew that watching was just not enough. At an early age, knowing that he wanted to become a championship driver himself, he stepped behind the wheel of a race machine. Beginning with go-karts, he sought to become the next great driver to come out of Owensboro, Kentucky. His older brothers have enjoyed success at the upper levels of NASCAR. Other Owensboro natives; Darrell and Michael Waltrip along with Jeremy Mayfield, also became stars of the NASCAR Nextel Cup series. Green became determined to have his name added to the list of the greatest drivers to come out of the small Southeastern town.

The brand honors a great racing driver 1955: Record victory in the Mille Miglia Memories of successes kept alive
Brief biography of Stirling Moss Daimler-Benz signed on Stirling Moss for the 1955 racing season, and things went extremely well for him. On May 2, he won the Mille Miglia in the record time of ten hours, seven minutes and 48 seconds at the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, together with navigator Denis Jenkinson. On July 16, 1955, he was the first to cross the finishing line in the British Grand Prix in Aintree, driving a Mercedes-Benz Formula One racing car, type W 196. Other successes during the 1955 season were a second place in the Belgian Grand Prix, second place in the Dutch Grand Prix, first place in the Tourist Trophy in Dundrod, Northern Ireland, and first place in the Targa Florio. In October 1955, Mercedes-Benz retired from active racing to transfer the technical capacity hitherto used for motor sport to passenger car development. In the following years, Moss drove different cars and proved in each season anew that he was a world-class driver. A day in April 1962 at Goodwood was to be fateful for Stirling Moss: his Lotus racing car skidded off course at high speed for reasons never clarified and crashed into an earth bank. Moss sustained serious injuries and after several months of recovery, he decided to retire from active racing.

The 'General Lee' may be only a car, but it runs rings around the other stars of 'The Dukes of Hazzard' - and even gives autographs TV Guide, May 1, 1982, by David Barry
A flatbed truck is hauling a wrecked 1969 Dodge Charger eastbound on the Hollywood Freeway, headed for a wrecking yard in Burbank. As a car pulls by for a close look at the wreck chained to the truck bed, the truck driver anticipates the anguished expressions that soon form on the faces of the children staring out at his cargo. He knows that mangled wreck, en route to the automotive equivalent of the glue factory, is likely to draw tears of mourning. This has happened before and it's not surprising. The wreck is more than a 13-year-old car. It's a wrecked TV star - undoubtedly the most famous car in the history of automobiles. A car seen weekly by an audience of more than 18 million households; a car whose likeness in kits, models, posters and games helps generate more than $100 million a year to Warner Bros. TV.
We're talking, of course, about the famous "General Lee," the bright-orange, Southern dirt-road express with the Confederate flag on the roof and racing numbers on the doors. The children on the freeway are miserable seeing the wreck because they think the one and only General Lee is finished forever. They don't know that at any given time, several General Lees are ready for the sacrificial altar of

graduated 3rd in his class at West Point, was a jet fighter pilot in Korea, and earned his Doctor of Astronautics from MIT. Each of those accomplishments helped to prepare Buzz Aldrin for the historic event when he and Neil Armstrong landed on the moon and took "One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for Mankind."
When the Eagle Landed on July 20, 1969 Buzz Aldrin completed an American mission, and his feat is widely remembered as the greatest achievement of the 20th century, and the most memorable event in television history. Mr. Aldrin also piloted the Gemini 12 rendezvous space flight in 1966, during which he set a new 5.5 hour record for extended spacewalking.
Buzz Aldrin voices his concepts of space travel to tourism conferences, Congressional leaders and the corporate world. His nonprofit ShareSpace Foundation, under a grant from NASA, is developing a study on just how long-range space exploration can benefit from opening the doors to space tourism; meanwhile his think-tank Starcraft Boosters, Inc. works on the rocket designs that can get us there. Dr. Aldrin chairs both the National Space Society and the ShareSpace Foundation.

Article by C.V. Glines for Aviation History Magazine
He was called America's Ace of Aces during World War I, the highest scorer of American aerial victories over the Germans. He could just as easily have been labeled the "luckiest man alive," however, since he survivedby his own count135 brushes with death during his exciting lifetime. Edward Vernon Rickenbacker was born in Columbus, Ohio, on October 8, 1890. The son of Swiss immigrants, he was the third of eight children. His parents christened him Edward Rickenbacher, but he later added Vernon as a middle name "because it sounded classy" and changed the spelling of his last name to Rickenbacker so it would be less Germanic. He answered mostly to "Rick" but would be best known during later years as "Captain Eddie." His father was a day laborer, and life was not easy for a lad who spoke with an accent that reflected his parents' household language.
