Yet his contemporary Jackie Stewart rated him 'one of the world's foremost drivers' and Jochen Rindt considered him a true rival. John Fitch has led a life that would beggar a scriptwriter. He's been a blue-water sailor, a fighter pilot, a test pilot, a professional racing driver, a team manager, race course director, prolific inventor, highway safety expert, automaker, entrepreneur and dreamer.
He was born John Cooper Fitch in Indianapolis, Indiana, August 4, 1917. He is a descendent of the inventor of the steamboat. His step-father was an executive with the old Stutz car company so Fitch witnessed auto racing at an early age, attending the Indianapolis 500 race in the passenger seat of a Stutz Bearcat at the Brickyard.
In the late thirties, Fitch went from Kentucky Military Institute to Lehigh University to study civil engineering. In 1939 he traveled to Europe and saw the last race at Brooklands just days before Chamberlain's declaration of World War II. Returning to the 'States, he sailed around the Gulf of Mexico in a 32-foot schooner from Sarasota to New Orleans. In the spring of 1941 he volunteered in the Army Air Corps. The Complete

August 1981
(Revised 1990) Section I o The following points are meant primarily as guidelines to members of the racing media. However, they also serve as a guide to promoters concerning the AARWBA position on the points noted. 1. The racing reporter's obligation to report fairly, objectively and completely is to accurately inform the interested race fan (paying public) of the activities before, during, and after a motor sports event and responsibly support the sport, the promoter and the competitors. 2. No responsible member of the media ever will intentionally falsely report or distort. Although mistakes can and do occur, any member found to be intentionally filing misleading, false or grossly biased reports will have his or her AARWBA membership suspended or revoked. 3. An AARWBA membership card is not and has no reason to be Carte Blanche for accreditation at any track. It simply identifies the bearer as a professional motor sports journalist. 4. Requests for special considerations (freebies, extra credentials, special parking) are just thatrequests. There is no obligation on the part of the promoter to grant them and rejection should not affect the media members treatment of the promoter.

It's not easy for screen mega-stars to grow old gracefully and stay on top at the same time. Tied to the action genre, even Clint Eastwood began to look stale and a little frail, his body too old to convince us he was still a genuine tough guy. Robert Redford meanwhile, chained to his sex symbol image, chose to play only ladykillers, employing ever-softer focus to get away with it. Marlon Brando simply ignored the whole process.
There is, though, one old-school superstar who pulled it off without too much of a hitch. Where Eastwood waited for age to make him suitable for Unforgiven, and then slipped back into pretending he was far younger, Paul Newman recognised the passing of time, chose his roles carefully and stuck to his guns. Thus he's the only pretty-boy screen-god to have retained the absolute respect of critics and public alike. This is why he was Sam Mendes' first choice to play gangster John Rooney in Road To Perdition - because he would be wholly on the ball and not the least bit overshadowed by the presence of Tom Hanks or next-generation pretty-boy Jude Law . Indeed, they'd be more concerned that he would blow THEM off the screen.

I was born and raised in Australia and fortunate to witness the 'London to Sydney Marathon' in 1970 which was a rage down-under. After seeing Andrew Cowan charge through the "bush" in his Hillman Hunter, another rally fan was born! Soon after, our family moved to Greece where rally is very popular and I saw my first World Rally event - the 'Acropolis Rally'. The following year I went to college in England which is rally heaven for all. For four years I attended the 'RAC' rally and saw legends at work and in the making. This rally "virus" was consuming me and then, while back in Greece, I met and conversed with Sandro Munari one night during lengthy repairs to his damaged Fiat 131 Abarth. I knew I had to be involved with rally someday. That day came in 1989 when one of my customers told me about Ski-Sawmill Rally School and, unhesitatingly, I was there. Shortly thereafter I had my first rally experience as co-driver at 'Sunriser 400' in Ohio. By 1992 I recorded my first win as Co-driver and in 1993 I won my first rally as a driver in my Audi 200.

Sponsor: GM Goodwrench Service Plus
Manufacturer: Chevrolet There was never any doubt in Dale Earnhardt's mind about what he wanted to be in life. As a young boy watching his father Ralph race and win in Stock car events throughout the Southeast, Dale developed a love for the sport that would ultimately fuel one of the most successful careers in the history of motorsports.
In his late teens, Dale began racing Hobby-class cars in and around his native Kannapolis, NC, working full-time by day, welding and mounting tires, and either racing or working on his cars by night. He financed his own effort, oftentimes having to borrow money to buy parts and pieces to run on the weekends, hoping to win enough to pay back the bank on Monday.
In 1973, Ralph Earnhardt died of heart failure while working on his race car. Crushed by the loss, Dale eventually learned to cope by becoming more determined than ever to be successful as a driver. He continued to compete on the Sportsman circuit, racing at speedways near his home such as Hickory, Concord, and Metrolina Fairgrounds.
Dale made his Winston Cup debut in 1975, finishing 22nd while driving Ed Negre's Dodge in the World 600 at Charlotte in a deal put together by CMS President Richard Howard. Over the next three years, he made a total of eight more starts, the last of which was the 1978 Dixie 500 at Atlanta, when he drove a second car for Rod Osterlund. Earnhardt finished fourth in the race, one spot behind Osterlund's regular driver, Dave Marcis.

The late sixties revolutionised the world in many ways and its ideals were even reflected in Grand Prix racing. The arrival of the Cosworth DFV at the time of the Paris student revolts marked F1's own emancipation as youthful, exhuberant underdog garagistes finally found a powerhorse to match their kit-car machines, enabling them to enjoy unparalleled freedom. Then, in that hippie summer of '69, came three more technical innovations, of which one was to change the face of F1 and two went belly-up within one season. 'Listen...it's a goal!'
The mid-century decades saw an increase in mass participation in sport, the consolidation of many national competitions, and greater achievement at international level.
War and sport
Rugby in the 1950s
Post-war celebrations included the triumphant tour of the New Zealand Army Kiwis, who delighted British crowds with their exhilarating rugby. This was a false dawn: rugby's new style was set by the unsuccessful 1949 tour of South Africa, which led to an emphasis on forward domination that was to blight the sport and have wider social consequences. As manliness was increasingly associated with physical toughness and aggression on the playing field, many baby-boom males became as emotionally hardened as their servicemen fathers had needed to be. Nevertheless, some notable players emerged in the 1950s, including Ron Jarden, one of the greatest All Black wing three-quarters. D (Click on thumbnail for enlargement, caption and reference)

Jack Avery
John Gilman Avery (1873-1927), known as 'Jack', was one of Urban's closest associates, being his friend, brother-in-law and camera operator for many years. Jack Avery and Urban first met when the latter was working in a stationery store in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Urban was becoming interested in Jack's half-sister Julia, whom he later married. Urban made a promise to do for the young Avery what he could, and when he became manager of the Warwick Trading Company in Britain, he invited him to join the company, which Avery did in 1899. He was appointed cameraman and assistant manager, and became one of Urban's most reliable workers, as well as a close friend. He naturally joined Urban at the Charles Urban Trading Company in 1903, and subsequently became manager of Kineto Limited. He later joined the Trans-Atlantic Company before trading under his own name as a film broker. Joseph Baucus
"He had a charming personality and only applied himself to business, when finance had to be procured to pay for his many costly amusements and mode of living"
