Rabies is a serious infection of the nervous system , which controls everything you do - from breathing to walking. A person can get rabies if he or she is bitten or scratched by an animal that carries the rabies virus. Fortunately, very few people get rabies and most cases today are found in wild animals. If someone gets bitten by an animal that has rabies, quick treatment can prevent the illness. Animal Bites
Rabies is very serious and can make a person very sick. The person's brain may swell and the person can die. That's why it's so important to see a doctor if a person gets bitten by an animal. This is especially important if bitten by a wild animal, such as a squirrel or a bat. But any mammal can get rabies, including household pets, such as dogs, cats, and even ferrets. Household pets can get a rabies vaccine to protect them and their owners. Animals who are not mammals, such as birds, fish, turtles, and snakes, cannot carry rabies. An animal infected with rabies carries the virus in its saliva, so if it bites a person, the virus has a way into the person's body. It's possible to get rabies from an animal scratch, too. People sometimes describe animals that have rabies as "foaming at the mouth." This happens because the animal's nerves no longer work properly and it can't swallow its own

Parents Infections
Although rabies infections in people are rare, they can cause serious health problems. So it's a good idea to know how to recognize the signs that your child has been bitten by a rabid animal and what to do about it.
Rabies is a virus that is usually transmitted by a bite from a wild infected animal, such as a bat, raccoon, skunk, or fox. If a rabid animal bite goes untreated, an infection can develop and lead to brain damage or even death. But if you recognize the warning signs of a rabies infection early, and get medical help, your child can make a full recovery. After a bite by a rabid animal, a child may develop a fever, headache, and general malaise. A twitching around the animal bite, a trademark symptom of rabies, may appear, in addition to a fever above 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40.5 degrees Celsius), agitation, and hallucinations. If you suspect that your child has been bitten by a rabid animal, even if there are no rabies symptoms, it is important to take your child to the emergency department immediately.
Any animal bites - even those that don't involve rabies - can lead to infections and other medical problems. As a precaution, you may want to call your child's doctor any time your child has been bitten.

The diagnosis of rabies in animals is performed on specimens submitted for examination following a bite or other possible exposure to a human or domestic animal, when the confinement and observation of the offending animal is not appropriate or possible. The results of these examinations are generally used by physicians and local health authorities to decide if rabies postexposure treatment is necessary, and therefore require the highest standards of sensitivity and specificity. The results of these tests also serve to produce rabies surveillance data. The test for rabies is performed by a microscopic examination of brain tissue samples using an immunofluorescence staining technique. Results are confirmed by virus isolation in a cell culture system.

Rabies History in New York State
Rabies Annual Summaries
Rabies in New York State was initially a disease carried by domestic dogs, a problem brought to all of North America by European settlers in the 1700s. With the advent of record keeping in the 1930s, reported cases of animal rabies fluctuated between 20 and 600 annually. Most cases were recorded in domestic dogs although there was also some spillover to livestock. From 1925 until 1944 there were 10 human rabies fatalities, all linked to domestic dog contact. Postwar compulsory canine vaccination programs in New York controlled the rabies cycle in domestic dogs by the early 1950s, but rabies in foxes spread concomitantly into the state from the south. Wildlife rabies has cycled in terrestrial carnivores in some areas of the state since the 1950s, mainly in red foxes, skunks and raccoons. The most persistent problems until 1990 were periodic rabies incursions into red fox populations in northern New York counties. The disease found its way to northern New York from the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec, Canada, where rabies was enzootic. See attached map A rabies outbreak of unprecedented proportions spread into New York State raccoon populations from the south in 1990, spreading northward across the

What is rabies?
Rabies is a severe viral disease that affects the central nervous system. It is almost always fatal. All warm-blooded mammals including humans are susceptible to rabies. What mammals carry rabies? Bats are the only rabies reservoir in the Pacific Northwest. In Washington, rabies has not been found in raccoons, skunks, foxes or coyotes. These species may carry the virus in other regions of the United States. Worldwide in developing countries dogs are the principal rabies reservoir. How common is human rabies and what is the source of the rabies virus? Human rabies is an extremely rare disease. Since 1990 the number of reported cases in the United States has ranged from 1 to 6 cases annually. Almost all human rabies cases acquired in the United States since 1980 have been due to bat rabies virus. When human rabies occurs due to exposure outside of the United States it is usually the result of the bite of a rabid dog. Has human rabies occurred in Washington?

Since 1939, only two human cases of rabies have occurred in Washington; one in 1995 and one in 1997. Bats are the primary reservoir for rabies in Washington State. Bats carrying rabies have been found in almost every county in Washington State. In other parts of the United States, Canada and Mexico, reservoirs include foxes, coyotes, skunks, raccoons, and dogs. Rabies is almost invariably fatal despite treatment; post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) should be considered for exposed individuals.

Currently, this species occurs only in localised areas of this range. African wild dogs are nomadic, highly social canids and form packs of up to 28 individuals with an average of around 8 - 12 members (Fig. 1). The main prey consists of antelope, which they mostly hunt down co-operatively. Packs are strictly hierarchical, each with a dominant (alpha) male and female. Usually only the alpha individuals breed, although the other members help to raise the young by bringing them food and by defending them. The average litter sizes is 7 - 10, although up to 19 may be born.

What is rabies?
In Europe rabies is mainly carried by the fox. Rabies, or 'hydrophobia', is known as a disease that makes dogs sick and mad. Consequently, all dogs in many northern European countries are vaccinated against it. However, it can affect all warm-blooded creatures, including man.
Rabies is caused by a virus, which, among other things, attacks the nervous system and is excreted later in the saliva. When an animal gets sick, it may start to bite.
People are most often infected by the bite of a dog, bat or monkey. In Europe the virus is mainly carried by the fox.
Rabies is rightly feared. By the time the symptoms appear, the disease can no longer be cured and almost always ends in death.

(CNN) A vaccine maker is recalling thousands of doses of rabies vaccine after discovering through routine testing that one lot contained live virus that could potentially harm human health. The lot had not been distributed, Aventis Pasteur spokesman Len Lavenda said in a telephone interview with CNN from the company's U.S. headquarters in Swiftwater, Pennsylvania. As a precaution, Aventis Pasteur is also recalling three other batches of Imovax that were made at the same time, the Lyon, France-based company said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement that the lots being recalled were distributed between September 23 and April 2, and "had passed all FDA-approved release tests, including testing to confirm the absence of live virus," suggesting the risk to anyone who may have received the vaccine is small. Still, anyone who received rabies vaccine between those dates should contact their health care provider, the CDC dispatch said. No unusual events associated with the recalled vaccine have been reported, it added.

Please note the addition of “prevention” to the title, a change that the Compendium Committee members and consultants believe is a more accurate reflection of the purpose for the document. This preface points out other changes that were made in the document this year and summarizes some of the discussions that took place during the Compendium meeting.
Compendium Changes
In Part I: B. Vaccine Selection, a change was made to address the issue of vaccines licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) between Compendium meetings. The Compendium document lists all rabies vaccines licensed by USDA and marketed in the United States so by default any vaccines licensed between meeting of the Compendium Committee should be considered part of the list. In Part I: C. Route of Inoculation, the reference to one site in the thigh was removed and replaced with the generic statement, “in accordance with the specifications of the product label or package insert” because each vaccine has its own recommendation. Information regarding where to report adverse reactions or vaccine failures was added to this section. The Compendium members and consultants believe that these data are critical to assessing vaccine efficacy and safety in the field and urge practitioners to be conscientious about reporting.

BEIJING, China (Reuters) Rabies cases have leapt nearly 63 percent in China in the first nine months of the year as the people's mad affair with pet dogs deepened, the China Daily reports. Rabies, "mad dog disease" in Chinese, killed 1,297 people up to the end of September, far exceeding the 1,003 deaths the Health Ministry reported for all of 2002, the newspaper said. This is the fifth straight year that China has seen a big jump in rabies infections. "Experts from the China Centre for Disease Control and Prevention are blaming the trend in pet ownership, the shaky quality of vaccinations, the public's weak awareness of vigilance and the low vaccination rate among the dogs as the major causes of the rapid rise in cases," the newspaper said. Another factor was stray dogs running wild on the outskirts of cities and in rural areas.

Rabies Overview
Rabies is a disease humans may get from being bitten by an animal infected with the rabies virus. Rabies has been recognized for over 4,000 years. Yet, despite great advances in diagnosing and preventing it, today rabies is almost always deadly in humans who contract it and do not receive treatment. Rabies can be totally prevented. You must recognize the exposure and promptly get appropriate medical care before you develop the symptoms of rabies.
  • Where rabies is found: Human rabies is quite rare in the United States. Only 27 cases have been reported in people in the United States since 1990. Yet in some areas of the world (for example, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America), human rabies is much more common. The incidence of rabies in people parallels the incidence in the animal kingdom. The great strides that have been made in controlling the disease in animals in the United States and in other developed countries is directly responsible for this decline in human rabies.
    • Although rabies in humans is very rare in the United States, between 16,000 and 39,000 people receive preventive medical treatment each year after being exposed to a potentially rabid animal.
