Hamster care
hamster care is choosing the right housing. This means finding a cage that is easy to take apart, easy to clean, well ventilated and secure. Also, we all know hamsters store food in their pouches, but hamster care means recognising when permanently stuffed cheeks are caused by impacted food. Always seek the advice of a vet in this situation.

RABBIT CARE
WHERE FROM

A reliable breeder is your best source. Visit the breeder if possible to see the young rabbit's parents, which is a good way of seeing how big your rabbit will be on maturity. Usually most breeds of rabbits reach maturity at six months of age. WHICH BREED
Domestic rabbits are divided into two classes, Fur and Fancy. For pets, usually the Fancy type rabbits are chosen, as the are smaller and more patterned. CARING FOR YOUR BABY RABBIT
A rabbit can leave the doe (mother) at eight weeks of age. If the rabbit is to be a child's pet, eight years old is a recommended age to be responsible for a pet rabbit. Baby rabbits in particular are very lively, so help will be needed for the child to look after his/her new pet at first. Grooming and handling soon has your pet manageable. Meal times are a good time for this to be done. HOUSING
Hutches made of wood are the most common form of keeping your rabbit warm and dry. They should be weatherproof and at the same time, well ventilated. If the hutch is outside as opposed to in a shed or lean-to, extra weatherproofing is necessary, such as a cover for the front of the hutch after dark and during wet weather. Rabbits can withstand cold, but wet is not for rabbits.

document.write (""); Feeding
A pet rabbit should be fed fresh hay (oats or alfalfa), pellets, and fresh vegetables. Pellets should make up less than half of the rabbit's diet as they get older. Hay should be available at all times as it makes hairballs and other problems less likely. Your rabbit should have a wide selection of vegetables available, with the exception of rhubarb or beans which should be avoided. And, of course, they should have fresh, clean water available at all times. Baby rabbits should be nursing on their mother's milk until they're three weeks old. Or, if it is a situation where the rabbit is an orphan, they can be fed by milk replacement diets, which are available in our catalog. After the first three weeks, they should be gradually introduced to alfalfa hay and pellets until they're 8 weeks old. They should then be offered free choice of unlimited alfalfa hay and pellets. After the third month they should be given vegetables - also introduced gradually, keeping quantities under an ounce. From 6 months on, start changing over from alfalfa to hay, reduce pellets to 1/4 cup per 3 pounds of your rabbit's weight, gradually add more vegetables, and allow them 1/2 ounce of fruit per 3 pounds of your rabbit's weight. At a year of age and over, they should be offered as much hay as they wish - but not alfalfa, just standard grass hay. They should be given about 1/4 cup of pellets per 3 pounds of their weight, depending on the amount of vegetables you're feeding. You should offer 1-2 cups of vegetables daily, and should offer fruit - about 1-2 oz per 3 pounds of your rabbit's weight.

Taking care of a pet rabbit
Tips for taking care of a pet rabbit including feeding, housing, and handling.
If you are looking for a pet that is friendly, gentle and fun, a rabbit is a good choice. Some things should be prepared for your pet before you bring him home, such as his cage or hutch as it is called. Your Rabbit's New Home A rabbit's hutch should be roomy and allow him plenty of space to move around. For an average size rabbit, a cage which is about four feet long, two feet high, and two feet wide makes a comfortable home for your rabbit. The bottom of the cage should be about half wire and half solid. Rabbits are very clean and will use the wire side for a bathroom and the solid side for sleeping. The waste falls down through the wire where it can be raked up and disposed of easily. Put some hay in the bedding area to make a comfortable little nest for the rabbit. If your cage has an all wire bottom you can put a nest box inside for the rabbit to sleep in. Fill the box with hay and it will work well also. Bedding The best bedding to use in the rabbits hutch is hay. It makes a nice warm bed. Shavings will fall down through the wire and leave the rabbit without a nest to sleep in. Shredded paper can be used as long as you change it every day or two as it can become wet easily and make the rabbit ill.

Most of the elderly rabbits I see are males. This is because unspayed female rabbits that are not bred tend to develop cancers of the reproductive tract. This is why I am a firm believer in neutering all pet rabbits. This is not any more dangerous a procedure than spaying a cat or a dog if it is done by a veterinarian who does them frequently and if it is done before the rabbit passes 6 month of age (older bunnies are often obese). Rabbits are wonderful gentle and inquisitive pets. If you follow these guidelines you and your new pet should enjoy many happy years together. More Articles Home

Rabbits - a bit of background
A female rabbit is called a doe (some call them a dam), the male rabbit is called a buck and the newborn babies are sometimes referred to as kits. There a lots of rabbit breeds, from lop ears to the huge Flemish Giants (some of which grow to 9kg!). There are dwarf rabbits that you will find in your local pet store and these don't generally grow as large as the normal rabbits.

Rabbit care - feeding your pet rabbit
Rabbit care - behavior issues
Most of what pet rabbits do can be traced back to their wild cousins. So if you know how rabbits behave in the wild, it will give you a fair indication of what your pet rabbit is likely to do in the domesticated situation.

Hi there, My name is Miriam and I would like to introduce you to my sweet and wonderful house bunnies. Each bunny has a web page of their own. I used to have a large number of bunnies, due to the rescue work that I was doing with a variety of groups. Once all my bunnies started dying from mycotoxin poisoning, my heart was devastated and I had a hard time recovering, and combined with my medical health condition, I had to stop doing rescue work and taking in new bunnies.

This information sheet explains how to look after long haired rabbits and some of the problems that arise with these animals bred by man without nature's common sense. Long haired rabbits have been prized for hundreds of years. But few people appreciate the effort that will be required to maintain the coat of these very special bunnies and rescue centres are taking in increasing numbers of long haired rabbits with neglected coats.

The Angora has a long, silky coat that can be spun into fine wool.
SWISS FOX
