Rabbits as Pets Guide to a Happy, Healthy Rabbit!
Rabbits make wonderful pets! Being inexpensive to keep and very quiet makes them the perfect pet in many types of homes!
Rabbits have been around for at least 3 to 4 million years and were first domesticated in Spain. Later, they were widely distributed by the seafaring Phoenicians. Rabbits were domesticated and used (and still are) for many different purposes. They have a great capacity to multiply themselves, and can therefore be raised readily for meat, fur, and testing in laboratories. Animal-World Recommends!

Their fur can be soft or rough, long or short. Behavior Rabbits can be litter boxed trained. Rabbits have scent glands under their chin that they use to mark territory. Rabbits stand on their hind legs which allows them to see better. Thumping the ground with the hind legs warns of danger nearby. Rabbits will lick fingers or sit comfortably in the lap when showing affection. Licking or grooming is a sign of affection. Nudging or huddling is a sign of affection or an attempt to get attention. Rabbits are very intelligent. They enjoy playing with toys, such as wood blocks, plastic toys and other assorted toys. Diet Do not give them salty or sugary snacks. Treat foods such as papaya, pineapple, berries, apple, melon, and pear are best provided in small amounts ; no more than one tablespoon per five pounds of body weight per day.

Dog Care: Exercising Your Pet

More Pet Resources More Dog Care Tips More Cat Care Tips Flea Activity Dog Walking Calculator ... Talk with Pet Owners You know it's good for you. You know that exercise can give you energy, help you maintain a healthy weight, keep your muscles and joints flexible, help you live longer, and above all, make you feel better. For all the same reasons, your pets need to get up and get moving. Not only can exercise extend your furry friends' lives; it may also expend some of their nervous energy and make them a little less likely to chew on the living room drapes. The thing is, nobody's filled pets in on all of these benefits of exercise. Without someone to lead the way, they're not going to run laps or do leg lifts in their spare time. So as a wonderful pet parent, part of your job is ensuring your animal family members get safe, enjoyable exercise on a regular basiswhether they're cats, dogs, turtles, or ferrets! All pets need some physical activity to live a happy, healthy life.

Newsletter Archives happypets.org RABBITS A hunny bunny can be a wonderful addition to your household if properly cared for. They are very mild mannered and enjoy being handled, but please, don’t buy one as an Easter gift. Through my volunteer work at animal shelters I have seen countless rabbits become homeless during the months following Easter because people got them as gifts and didn’t want the responsibility after the thrill of a new pet was over. Nutrition Commercial rabbit pellets are available in most pet stores. Contrary to popular belief, they can not survive on a diet of lettuce and carrots, however, these can be offered as healthy tasty treats and make your rabbit a happypet. You can also treat your rabbit to sunflower seeds (it’s fun to watch them spit the shells out) nuts and fruits, but don’t overdo it. They might come to prefer these items and refuse their regular diet. You may be shocked, one day, to find your rabbit eating it’s own feces. This practice is called coprophagy. While disgusting to humans, coprophagy is a perfectly normal practice for rabbits that helps aid in digestion, and increases nutrient absorption within the body. As with any pet, fresh water should be readily available at all times. Housing Rabbits can allowed free run of the house if they are litter trained, but if your rabbit is to be kept in a cage, it should be housed individually in an enclosure no smaller than 5 square feet, 16 inches high and have smooth flooring. Wire mesh can be hard on the feet.

Another Chance Outdoor Pet Care Information Cold Weather Hot Weather Although this information is written about rabbits, there are useful tips that can be applied to many other pets! Cold Weather Tips Hi, I saw the section on outdoor animals, and just hoped I could help by adding a few tips on keeping outdoor rabbits in the winter. Ours live outside by their choice, we tried to bring them inside last winter and they were miserable, didn't eat well and just stayed in one place most of the day. We had several instances of GI problems, so we decided to make them the best home we could outside, and they are sooo much happier. Now they have large pens in a custom built shed that they share with our pet ducks. (They are separated from the ducks however.) They have their toys and chew baskets, they also have a large fenced area to play in. They take turns playing outside anyday that the weather is cooperative. I realize not everyone is able to do this for their rabbits, but I wanted to offer some tips that anyone can do, with just a small amount of money. We bought heated water bowls for them, which are WONDERFUL. They are just under $20.00 and worth every cent. They are available at www.petvetsupply.com

Cats and dogs may be two of the most popular pets around, but small animals like hamsters are considered to be some of the best pets for first-time pet owners.
    Small Pets - Rabbits
The domestic rabbit comes from the Oryctotagus cuniculus species, and is a descendant of wild rabbits from western Europe and northern Africa . Rabbits are herbivores (plant-eating), have a high reproductive rate and are most active at dawn and dusk. When threatened, rabbits won't stand their ground, but will use their lightning speed to run away from harm. This unaggressive behavior makes them popular pets. If you're a rabbit owner, you may have noticed that rabbits will eat their own poop directly from the anus . To help avoid this behavior, you should make rabbit pellet food available for your pet 24 hours a day (keep a small dish in the cage full at all times). These pellets are rich in protein, fiber vitamins and minerals and is the best way for them to obtain these nutrients. You should also feed your bunny lots of fresh veggies like carrots, lettuce and

Pets love us unconditionally. They're also great for our health - mentally and physically. Caring for pets can boost self-esteem , prevent loneliness, and even lower heart rate and blood pressure in some people. Growing up with a pet can be a wonderful experience for children. But keep in mind that although the experience gives kids a sense of responsibility, only adults can be truly responsible for a pet. Selecting the right pet is a serious decision that your family members should make together. Before You Select a Pet
A common mistake is bringing home a pet on an impulse without fully understanding the level of commitment involved. For instance, lots of people buy bunnies at Easter time without giving a thought to the 5- to 10-year commitment their family will be making to the animal. Moms and dads also often flock to the pet stores and shelters to find a dog or cat for a surprise Christmas or birthday present for their kids. But many shelters and pet stores actually don't allow purchases or adoptions of pets around the holidays because, far too often, animals are returned when families haven't thought through all of the responsibilities of taking care of the pet. If you're adamant about getting your child a pet for a birthday or the holidays, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) suggests that you buy and wrap some pet supplies (pet bowls, pet bed, leash, carrier, etc.), then pick out the pet as a family. That way, you and your child will have a chance to really think about whether you're ready for a pet.

Practical Pet Care Greetings, Practical Pet Care is outgrowing its current home! With over 8,000 pages of pet information and pictures, and almost 300,000 visitors a month, we've started overloading the server during very-high traffic periods. Within two weeks, we'll be snug in our new habitat, a dedicated server which has 10 times as much space and processing power! I'm also taking advantage of the move to freshen up the look of the site, so you'll see a cool new look very soon. The main site will remain the same, though, so you won't have to learn anything new... it will just look a bit different. We're also adding a Pet Mall, so if you have pet products you want to sell, we can set you up as a vendor, and you can sell right from Practical Pet Care! The Mall has really cool features, and you can add as many or as few products you want, set the price, set shipping, upload pictures, everything you can think of! If you need online credit card processing, we can even do that. If you'd like a personal email when the Mall is ready to open, let me know you're interested at steph@practical-pet-care.com
