23. Pet Care Tips - Rabbits
SPCA Logo. pet care Tips HOME care rabbits need lots of living space to keep them happy and healthy. They need a large weatherproof house at least 150cm
http://www.spca-ct.co.za/petcare/rabbits.shtml
ow would you feel if you were locked up all alone in a tiny hutch, forgotten at the bottom of the garden? Sadly, all too many rabbits are kept like this because of the thoughtless actions of their owners.
HAPPY FAMILIES
If you own a rabbit there are some very important. things you should know. Rabbits are social animals and like to live in groups in the wild, so it's not fair to keep just one on its own. Two males can live happily together but they must come from the same litter and be neutered to stop them fighting. Females from the same litter can also live together. Rabbits and guinea pigs make good house-mates too, providing they have been introduced at an early age.
It's best to keep the sexes apart, but if you are going to put males and females together they must be neutered and from the same litter. It is extremely important to get your rabbits neutered. Female rabbits can have as many as eight babies in one litter and up to three litters a year. It would be very hard to find good homes for all of them!
HOME CARE
Rabbits need lots of living space to keep them happy and healthy. They need a large weatherproof house at least 150cm long, 60cm wide and 60cm high, with a ramp going down into an enclosed grassy area. The enclosure should be at least one metre high so the rabbits can hop about with ease and it needs to be covered in wire mesh to stop other animals attacking them. It should also be sunk into the ground to stop the rabbits burrowing out.

28. Pet Care Advice For Rabbit Lovers From Petplanet.co.uk
the british rabbit councils advice on pet rabbits and how to choose a healthy happy rabbit.
http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplanet/health/choosing_rabbit.htm
Choosing a healthy, happy rabbit from the British Rabbit Council Always buy your pet from a British Rabbit Council breeder or a reputable pet shop. Consider giving an older rabbit a good home from a charity such as the RSPCA. Never buy a rabbit which is less than eight weeks old; it is too young to be away from its mother. Check the rabbit over to make sure it is in tip top health - the following points will help you: EYES: Should be bright and clear and not runny or closing. NOSE: Check the nose is clean with no dried deposits or mucus present. CHEST: Breathing should be quiet with no 'rattles' if you gently put your ear against the rabbit's chest. Take care not to startle the rabbit when you do this! EARS: The rabbit's ears should be clean inside. BODY: Rabbits should be 'well fleshed'; the backbone should not be prominent. Run your hands gently over the rabbit in the direction of the fur and see if the rabbit feels 'nourished'. COAT: This should be clean and healthy-looking with no tiny white dandruff-like flakes present - unfortunately a sign of mites! TEETH: The top teeth should slightly overlap the bottom but take care when examining the rabbit's mouth so not to startle him. There should be no sign of decay.

30. Rabbit Care Neutering Bunny Rabbits Pet Health From Petplanet.co.uk
neutering rabbits promoting better rabbit health and pet behaviour at petplanet.co.uk.
http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplanet/health/rabbit_neuter.htm
It's Nicer to Neuter By Carina Norris If they don't want to breed from their pets, responsible dog and cat owners have their pets neutered. But rabbit owners? Far too few rabbit owners know that their pets would be far happier and healthier if they had this simple operation. In the past, many female rabbits which were assumed to have died from 'old age' were actually killed by reproductive cancers, such as breast, uterus and ovarian cancer. Unless they are spayed (the neutering operation for female animals), up to 80% of female rabbits naturally develop these cancers by the age of five years. As soon as they are old enough to breed - at around four to six months - they will start having repeated pregnancies, or false pregnancies, and will probably become moody and aggressive. However, spaying eliminates or reduces the behavioural problems, and prevents the possibility of your pet developing these fatal cancers. Male rabbits benefit from being neutered, too. Boy bunnies have gained a somewhat unfortunate reputation for being 'bruisers', but if they are neutered, they will be less likely to fight. Neither will the operation affect your rabbit's personality - except for perhaps making them calmer and easier to live with, both for you, and any rabbit companions they may have. Neutered rabbits have a much more laid-back attitude, and are much less likely to bite or scratch their owners, or attack even when a hand is put inside their cage or hutch, or be destructive in the home.

Rescued rats, mice, hamsters, chinchillas, and guinea pigs need permanent and foster homes. Click this banner for more information! First, let us state that for the record, we use the term "pocket pet" in a very loving way. We in no way feel that they are toys or are less than living pets who deserve as much care as larger pets. They are not throw away pets, or impulse buys or "great first pets for kids". The term pocket pets is used now in our name instead of small animals because to many people, small animals mean any animal other than farm animals or horses. Changing the name has helped to change the perception of the types of pets we have for adoption. Good homes are far and few between. Only when a rabbit or small pet is adopted into a forever home, can another be rescued and brought into one of the foster homes. We get far more requests asking us to take in unwanted pets than requests from people seeking adoptable pets. Because of this, we are unable to take in most of the pets we are asked to help.

Rabbits Rabbit Care
Cages And Equipment Housing Preparing the Cage or Hutch Feeding ... Health and Illnesses
As with any pet, keeping a rabbit requires a commitment to care for it during its life which could be 5-10 years or longer. The commitment required includes not only routine feeding, care and time spent with the rabbit but also the provision of veterinary treatment if the rabbit becomes ill which can be costly. Although proper care will go a long way to ensuring that any rabbit remains happy and healthy there may still be times when prompt veterinary treatment is needed and once a rabbit is ill it can deteriorate quickly. However, some insurance companies do offer veterinary insurance cover for pet rabbits. Rabbits should also be vaccinated against Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) and Myxomatosis annually. A common cause of death in female rabbits (does) is uterine cancer which can often spread to other organs before it is diagnosed. This can be prevented by spaying if the rabbit is not intended for breeding and is best done when the rabbit is between 6 months and 2 years of age. Rabbits can be kept outside or indoors as they make good house pets , being easily litter trained . The decision as to where the rabbit is to be kept will affect the type of Cage or Hutch required for the rabbit.
