CONTACTS INTRODUCTION The Saskatchewan Specialty Livestock Marketing Study was undertaken for the Agri-Food Investment Fund by PPD Technologies Inc. The study was completed over the months of June to October 1997, was limited to the specialty livestock sectors currently produced in Saskatchewan. This project was sponsored by the Canada-Saskatchewan Agri-Food Innovation Fund. The specialty livestock sectors covered by this study include: bison, ostrich, emu, rhea, rabbit, game birds, horses, elk, white tailed deer, fallow deer, wild boar and sheep. However during the course of the study, some of the specialty livestock groups either elected not to participate (elk) or, more often the case, were in organizational turmoil as commodity groups and were not capable of continued participation (emu, rhea, game birds). The study is aimed primarily at marketing specialty livestock, but discusses when necessary, production and organizational issues.

The following is lightly edited, forwarded from a post to
Alt.Sustainable.Agriculture two months ago. At that time it was posed there
as a question. It was offered because I got the feeling that some
participants defined sustainable as "Yes doctor, we can SUSTAIN this patient
on life support equipment until their medical insurance runs out".
Now I am offering it here as a statement of my own definition, which was
included as my answer to my own group question. (I do not fit the definition
of a Yuppie forever defining the word sustainable. I like compost more than
computers.)

The new Maryland Goat Directory will contain a listing of producers that routinely have goats (market and breeding) for sale. The directory will be searchable by breed or type and county. There will also be listings for goat products, such as club goats, cheese, soap, and fiber. The directory will be available on the Internet and in printed form. Producers in nearby states are eligible to have listings in the directory if they conduct business in Maryland. To be included in the directory, please fill out and return the enclosed survey (self-mailer). Feel free to make copies of the survey and give it to other producers. If you have goats, but do not sell goats or goat products, there is no reason for you to fill out the and be included in the directory. If the goat directory is successful, a similar directory can be developed for sheep, lambs, and wool. Download a PDF copy (294 K) of the directory survey.

Pest Control for the Vegetable Garden
    by Karen Gross
One of the biggest challenges for vegetable gardeners is pest control. Anyone who has tried to keep a determined deer from eating the sweet corn knows how difficult it can be to deter animals, including insects, birds, rabbits and other wildlife from what, for them is a natural smorgasbord. From their perspective, there sit these wonderful veggies, all neat and weeded, almost as if you placed the plants there just for them. And so animals that we might otherwise enjoy can become a nuisance when it comes to the garden. While avoiding wildlife is nearly impossible, chemical pesticides are often an effective means of deterring unwanted insects. However, many gardeners are uncomfortable using these harsh chemicals that can leak into water supplies and harm the environment. They also have concerns about using chemicals in the foods they feed their families. Here are some ideas for more organic pest control. Crop Rotation Practicing crop rotation every year in your vegetable garden and using companion plants will improve your soil and keep the pests under control. Most insects need time to become established in the soil. They may take two to three seasons to get their life cycle established. By practicing vegetable rotation and varying the type of plants grown in a particular area from year to year, you can avoid establishing plant specific types of garden pests.

The governorship of Hamad¢n had a total population of 695,283, of which 178,949 lived in eight cities (Zanj¢ni and Rahm¢ni, p. 23). It was upgraded to the general governorship ( farm¢n-d¢ri-e koll ) of Hama-d¢n in 1966, but in the following censuses it was promoted to the province ( ost¢n ) of Hamad¢n and its area underwent minor modifications: 20,172 km2 in 1966 and 1976, 19,445 km2 in 1986, and 19,493 km2 in 1996 (Zanj¢ni and Rahm¢ni, p. 6). The internal division of this province within its present boundaries is shown in Table 1 (Zanj¢ni et al., p. 7).

    Coastal Heritage
An introduction to the history of the Sefton Coast
Early settlement would have occurred in an environment very different to today's landscape. It is likely that what dunes did exist formed barriers with lagoons behind them. The coast throughout Mesolithic, Neolithic, bronze age and iron age times was constantly changing with probably at least four transgressions and retreats of the coast. This article looks at more recent history and on the landscape that we see today. How did it form, how has it changed and how have we changed it. There have probably been two major periods of dune building on the Sefton Coast. In the Netherlands old dunes and new dunes have been identified. The older dunes were formed prior to Roman times and subsequently were much eroded. On the Sefton Coast the present dune system probably began to form about 800-900AD in a period of rising sea-levels. High, actively mobile dune systems are often a reflection of erosion pushing the sand into high mounds. Perhaps the first settlers we should think about seriously are the Scandinavians from 850AD onwards. Formby, Ainsdale, Birkdale and Ravenmeols are all of Scandinavian origin. There is evidence to suggest that the two cultures, Anglo Saxon and Scandinavian, mingled. By Domesday times both cultures coexisted.
