Language Arts/English Philosophy Language Arts consists of the broad subject areas of reading, writing (which includes spelling, grammar, mechanics, language usage, and penmanship), listening and speaking. From the earliest days of life children are learning to use language to communicate and to make sense of the world. Our goal in literacy instruction is to give them the tools to communicate and effectively interpret the spoken and written word. In addition, lower, middle and high school teachers of English and language arts communicate their love of language and instill in their students a deep appreciation of both the beauty and practicality of carefully constructed stories, essays, poetry, novels, and speeches.
Nursery and Kindergarten Language Arts At the nursery level, we believe that an integrated language arts program in which children use language in order to communicate and learn about their world is the most effective way to develop skills in speaking, listening, and emergent reading and writing. Our program builds on young children's curiosity and enthusiasm and is based on the understanding that young children learn best when they can construct meaning in a context-rich environment. It is in this environment that children have many opportunities to engage in pretend play, look at books and be read to, listen to stories being told and on audiotape; use the classroom library; dictate and dramatize stories; see, create and use a wide variety of print in everyday classroom activities-signs, notes, lists, labels, etc.; express ideas and feelings, ask questions, play with language, and listen to the ideas, feelings and questions of others.

Arts through Literacy: People Who Have Made a Difference
An exhibit by the K-12 students of the SDSU/City Heights Educational Collaborative Schools on display in the SDSU library donor hall from July 7 to September 7, 2003. What is an Integrated Arts Curriculum? Dr. Nan L. McDonald, Faculty, SDSU School of Music and Dance
SDSU/ City Heights Educational Collaborative
K-12 Integrated Arts Curriculum Director
"Visual and performing arts are expressions of our culture and provide insights into other cultures. How could anyone debate our responsibility to make sure the arts are taught and integrated throughout each child's public school experience? For example, one of the most important ways we help improve literacy skills is to model the strategies that good readers use. When I read I visualize the scenes and characters and I hear each voice and sound the author presents me. In this way, when I read I make predictions, I get emotionally involved and I reflect. Integrating the arts into each subject area is not a diversion, quite the opposite it is one of our most powerful teaching strategies!" Dr. Ian Pumpian, SDSU College of Education

Language Arts Activities The following activities are suggested to help incorporate language skills into your study of shorebirds and the wetlands they depend on. An abbreviated code following the title of each activity gives a general guide to the grade levels for which the activity is likely to be appropriate. The abbreviations are: P = primary (grades K-3), UE = upper elementary (grades 4-6), JH = junior high (grades 7-9), HS = high school (grades 10-12). Wild Spellers (P,UE)
Prepare a set of shorebird and/or wetlands vocabulary word cards by writing each word and its definition on a separate index card. Or, hand out an index card to each student in the class and assign each student to write out a vocabulary word and its definition on his/her card. Have students study the vocabulary words before playing this game. Shuffle the cards and place them in a drawing pile at the front of the room. Divide the class into two teams and have them line up. The first student in Team 1 picks up a card and reads out the definition. Team 2 huddles to guess the word 15-second time limit. The first student in line announces the answer. If correct, the team wins one point. The first student then attempts to spell the word. If correct, the team wins one more point. This word is placed in a discard pile. The second member of Team 1 then must pick another word card and read the new definition aloud. Team 2 guesses again, and so on, until an incorrect answer is given.

Promoting Multilingualism on the Internet: Korean Experience

Since its birth, the Internet has been dominated by the English language and North-American culture. In a world of five to eight thousand different ethnic groups who reside in approximately 160 nations states speaking 5,000 distinct languages, some language must be the common language of the Internet. Many people believe that English must be default the standard language on the Internet. There are clear indications of English becoming a lingua franca in the cyberspace. The autor summarizes the advantages of multicultural and multilingual Internet. He argues that multilingualism on the Internet is a necessary, if not the sufficient, condition for transforming an ephemeral (=unstable and transitory) cybersociety into a robust one.
