  • Quilting From " What's Your Hobby " episode DWH-119 advertisement This quilt was created with the help of a quilting kit. Patterns and kilts can help beginners learn design and color combinations. Quilter Vicki Casagrande learned quilting from her grandmother, who gave quilts to family members to mark important rites of passage such as weddings or graduations. Casagrande is carrying on her grandmother's traditions in her own quilting projects. She has family members sign quilt squares that become part of larger keepsake quilts for other family members. The family even includes quilting and quilt signings as part of bridal- and baby-shower activities making Casagrande's hobby an inclusive, family affair. Casagrande says beginners who are intimidated by the hobby should think of quilting as putting together a large jigsaw puzzle cutting pieces apart and sewing them back together and advises beginners to take classes for basic instruction.

    167. Quilting
The quilting effect is very much controlled by the radius of the Gaussian Blur applied. For sharp edges, use low numbers. The left side of the graphic below
    http://www.state-of-entropy.com/quilting.htm
This technique gives a nice "quilted" effect to any text or drawn shape that you choose. To start, open a new file, with a white background and 16 million colors. Add some text in black or draw some shapes or designs. I think antialiased graphics work best. For colorizing purposes, you may want to save your text selection to an alpha channel (Selections: Save to Alpha Channel). If you're working with a shape, use the magic wand to select the black areas and then save that to the alpha channel. When you're done, deselect everything (Selections: None).
Next, we're going to duplicate our background layer for later use (Layers:Duplicate). After the layer is duplicated, return to the background layer by selecting it in the Layers pallette or menu. To avoid confusion, choose Layers: View Current Only, so that we can see what we're doing in the next few steps. Now apply a gaussian blur (Image, Blur: Gaussian Blur) Set the radius to about 3.00.
After the blur, apply the Embossing filter (Image, Other:Emboss.) Your image should look something like the shot below. Depending on your graphic, you may need to smooth out the grays at this point. If necessary, you can add 6% uniform noise to remove any gradient patterns that appear (Image, Noise: Add . Check the Uniform box and set the slider to 6.)
Now we return to our second layer by selecting it in the Layers pallette or menu. In the layers menu, select Properties. Change the blend mode from Normal to Difference. This gives the basic quilted effect shown.

    HISTORY OF QUILTING
Julie Johnson Random House Dictionary defines a quilt as "a coverlet for a bed, made of two layers of fabric with some soft substance, as wool or down, between them and stitched in patterns or tufted through all thicknesses in order to prevent the filling from shifting." The word quilt comes from the Latin culcita meaning a stuffed sack, but it came into the English language from the French word cuilte The origins of quilting remain unknown, but historians do know that quilting, piecing, and applique were used for clothing and furnishings in diverse parts of the world in early times. The earliest known quilted garment is on the carved ivory figure of a Pharaoh of the Egyptian First Dynasty about 3400 B.C. In 1924 archaeologists discovered a quilted floor covering in Mongolia. They estimated that it dates from somewhere between the first century B.C. to the second century A.D. There are also numerous references to quilts in literature and also inventories of estates.

Today's Featured Quilting Tips Tip: Support Your Quilt When planning for a quilt to be hung on the wall, be sure to include extra fabric for a hanging sleeve. This tube of fabric should run the entire width of the quilt and be deep enough to accept the dowel or rod that will be attached to the wall. Tip: Keep Sandpaper Handy Place a piece of find sandpaper under your fabric when using a template and pencil to marking your stitching or cutting lines by hand. The fabric will stick to the sandpaper and lessen the chance of inaccuracy due to stretching. Tip: Beeswax Beeswax aids in strengthening your hand sewing thread and eliminating knots. Check your local fabric store for this handy product. A special holder is provided to contain the beeswax and prevent breakage.

Let's use Ellen Howard's new book The Log Cabin Quilt with illustrations by Ronald Himler (Holiday House, 1996 ISBN 0823412474. Library Binding Paperback .) as the inspiration for a quilt theme. From there we can go to art, history, or math and that's just for starters.
