A Timeline of Quilting History in America
Pre-colonial Europe The concept of patchwork, to make efficient or frugal use of valuable woven textiles is known in various parts of the world. Applique is practiced for decorative purposes on clothing and home furnishings. Padded and quilted (stitched) garments are worn for warmth, geometric stitching patterns on linings can be construed as decorative, but most quilted garments were either worn as underwear or were covered with an outer layer of fashionable (and unquilted) silk. The techniques have not yet been combined into what we recognize as a quilt. 1600's and the American Colonial Era Home furnishings such as draperies and bed covers, when not made from fancy tapestry or printed panels, are embroidered or have applique designs similar to the embroidery. Trapunto comes into use, both as block work, and as whole-cloth work. Quilted counterpanes are either made in the whole-cloth style from both plain and printed fabrics, or are applique works centered around a large medallion. Colonial American cloth is woven from flax or wool, or combined to make linsey-wolsey. Much fabric is imported from Europe, most quilts are imported commercially due to lack of industry in the colonies. early 1700's Earliest Amish settlements in Pennsylvania. Floral fabrics from France are popular imports for broderie perse. Mosaic style quilts featuring the Tree of Life and Flowers in an Urn are popular.

    SABER's TOUR TO JAPAN
Qualification for these Japanese tours began in 1980 when Jerry was assiged to the US Embassy in Japan. He met Carol in a flea market (also called a shrine sale) in 1989 while she was on a tour to Japan. These markets provide opportunities to liberate wonderous treasures including: TEXTILES DOLLS ANTIQUES OB I, WOMEN'S KIMONO BOY'S DAY BANNERS WEDDING KIMONO CHILDREN'S KIMONO and BASKETS ! Within a short time, they were married. Carol, having already lived for several months in Kyoto, adapted quickly to her new surroundings. While in Japan, they traveled extensively. Much of this travel was with family, friends and folks associated with Jerry's employeer. Little did they know that these "tours" would lead to more after they returned to the United States in January 1995. Many requests from personal friends, attendees at Carol's lectures and students in Carol's classes led to their first Japan tour in November 1997. Since then they have led many additional tours. Some guests have gone with them more than once. Others were planning to go again. Needless to say, many were very disappointed when the tours were discontinued in 2003. However, they have restarted the tours with one leaving on 19 November 2005 and another on 19 March 2006. Since there is a limit on the number of guests on each tour, we need to hear from you before both are sold out. Also, we are taking reservations for a fall tour departing on 19 November 2006.
