Skip all these words and go directly to my quilts or to my quilting bookmarks or to quilt shows I've attended or to the Quilts, Quilters, Quilting and Patchwork in Fiction lists The women in my family have always been needleworkers. As a small child I learned to sew from my mother, Kathryn Blakslee , to crochet and tat (well, OK, I can't remember how to tat!) from my Grandmother Emma Lang, and to knit from my Grandmother Katharine Blakslee. My Grandmother Blakslee and my Great Aunt Salome Lang were also quilters. Aunt Salome taught me that everything you make must have some mistake in it because only God can make something perfect.
Back about 1966 Grandma Blakslee was making a sunbonnet sue quilt and she let me help with the quilting. When it was completed she loaned me her quilting frame and I appliqued a crib quilt top with "Danish Modern" birds and hand quilted the top. That was it for the next 25 years.
Then along came my parents' 50th wedding anniversary in 1991 and I volunteered to put together a family quilt . Each family member decorated a 12" block of unbleached muslin. Some added cross stitch, others crochet, applique, and other needlework. Many of the children painted and glue gunned. Each block included the name and the birth year of the participant and represented who the person is. The quilt is 16 blocks square and is put together with blue calico borders and sashing. It currently resides in our parents home in Arizona.

Quilts, Quilters, Quilting, and Patchwork in Fiction
A Bibliography Maintained by Betty Reynolds
Join the Blue Ribbon Anti-Censorship Campaign! This list started in 1995 as a suggestion on rec.crafts.textiles.quilting that we should share information about fiction which includes quilts, quilters, quilting, or patchwork. Since that time, quilters on other discussion groups worldwide have added titles to the list. The list includes fiction for children (including easy picture books), young adults, and adults. Due to the length of the list, I've divided it into two parts: Adult Fiction and Children and Young Adult Fiction
If you have suggestions for additions to this list, please e-mail Betty Reynolds . Annotations are particularly welcome. The list is growing and will never be complete so long as you continue to send in new suggestions.

Everything today is made by machines - cold, impersonal, identical. Fifteen thousand other people are wearing the exact same shirt that you just bought from the Gap. Think about it: you'd probably be a lot happier if everything you owned were handmade specifically for you. If we don't fight this mechanization of society, humans will eventually become slaves to machines (although that is With visions of apocalyptic terror now running through your head, you can ease your pain by learning how to make a personal, homemade quilt. The art of quilting has seen a resurgence in recent years, and making a quilt not only allows you to participate in artistry, but also gives you a comfy warm blanket as an end result. Quilting is not that tough. Those pioneer women did it in the 1800s, and they didn't even have electricity. So hold on to your saddles, buckaroos, and (in bad Western accent), "let's larn us some quiltin'."

78. General Quilting Instructions
Learn the basic techniques including how to cut and piece shapes, create borders and bind a quilt.
http://www.kathkwilts.com/lessons/gendirs.html
General Quilting Instructions
For the Beginner
Read all directions carefully. Steps are given for several piecing and appliqué techniques. Refer to the sections which apply to your chosen project. Pre-wash all fabrics and iron. Do not use fabric softener, as it will make your fabrics limp and harder to work with. Fabric starch can be used to make the fabric easier to work with.
Cutting Shapes for Piecework
Pattern templates are prepared by tracing all shapes needed for piecework on template plastic or other stiff material. Accuracy is very important. Templates are traced without the 1/4" seam allowance for traditional hand piecing and with the seam allowance included for the machine piecing approach. When using a template, lines will be marked on to the wrong side of the fabric. The template is then removed and you will cut according to your chosen piecing method. For hand piecing you will be marking your SEWING lines on the fabric, and will cut 1/4" AWAY from these lines. For machine piecing your shapes will already include the seam allowance, and you will be marking your cutting lines. Cut directly on the lines drawn. "Template-Free" cutting is done by trimming out your required shapes, with an exact 1/4" seam allowance included, using rotary cutting tools. In many cases strips of fabric will be cut, from selvage edge to selvage edge, at a determined width and then "crosscut" into rectangles, squares and triangles. Fold fabric in half, matching salvage edges, for easier cutting. With this approach, you will not need to cut a template for most shapes. Lines may then be added 1/4" IN from the cut edge for hand piecing.
