Crazy Quilting History: A Victorian Craze
The Birth of Crazy Quilts The 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition was a big event in Victorian society. One of the most popular exhibits was the Japanese pavilion with its fascinating crazed ceramics and asymmetrical art. Women were eager to incorporate this new look into their quilts and with the help of popular women's magazines the making of crazy quilts became quite the rage. Creativity was wide open with women sewing asymetrical pieces of fabric together in abstract arrangements. This enthusiasm for crazy quilting continued until about 1910. Crazy quilts were more show pieces than functional and were often made as smaller unquilted "lap robes" that were used to decorate the parlor. They were fitting showpieces for the lavish interior decoration of the day. These crazy quilts were made using velvet, silk and brocade fabric, cut and pieced in random shapes. What a perfect way for women to show off their needlework skills! Using silk thread, women placed lovely decorative stitches on each seam. Intriguing names like feather, herringbone, fly and chain describe just a few of the intricate stitches. The imagination and skill of the seamstress was the limit. To the Victorians the word "crazy" not only meant wild but also broken or crazed into splinters; a good description of the look the various triangles and other odd shapes gave to these quilts. Although crazy quilts may appear haphazard they were carefully planned. Hours were spent cutting shapes and trying out various arrangements of the pieces before sewing. The following quote from an 1883 article in "The Chester Times", Chester, PA. gives an idea of how they were made.

What is a Quilting Machine?
A quilting machine is an industrial sewing machine of special design that shares many features of domestic sewing machines. It also has some unique features such as an extended throat (American quilters call them "Longarms") and unlike it's domestic cousin is fully mobile. The machine rests on a movable platform fitted with wheels that ride along a track running the full length of a long narrow table. This provides "X" axis movement. The machine is also fitted with wheels that ride on a shorter track on the movable platform, at right angles to the main track allowing "Y" axis movement. Handles fitted to the machine allow the operator to move it in any direction in a horizontal plane. The table, up to 4.3 metres (14 ft) long is equipped with a number of full length rollers designed to hold the work in a fixed horizontal position inside the throat of the machine. The table dimensions allow quilting to be done on items ranging from the largest king size bed spreads down to tiny miniatures. The earliest "Longarm" quilting machines date back to at least the 1950's. Today there are several thousand machines located throughout the world, most of them in the U.S.A. where all are currently manufactured. There are about five major manufacturers and several smaller ones. Over 200 machines have found their way to Australia and the number is growing fast.

Suggested Quilting Patterns for Kids
Block Patterns
The following patterns all make good first blocks. Remember the more seam lines, the more time consuming it will be for the children who are sewing for the first time. Less seams means less frustration for first time sewers as a general rule. Directions for making these blocks can be found in books on the suggested reading list . You may also find directions for some of these block on the World Wide Web quilting page
Layout Patterns
Below are some possible layouts for your blocks. Don't limit yourself to the traditional alternate layout. If you find you are short one or two picture blocks, consider making one yourself or making a signature block or a title block for the front of the quilt.

    Teacher of the Year
Jenny Carr Kinney of Ventura, CA was named the National Quilting Association Teacher of the Year 2005 at the recent NQA Quilt Show held in Columbus, OH. As she accepted the honor Jenny said: "I am flattered to have been nominated by my students and colleagues and honored to have been chosen by the National Quilting Association as 'Teacher of the Year 2005'." Jenny has been making quilts since 1968 and in 1989 began professionally teaching quilt making. In addition to earning her teacher's certification from the National Quilting Association in 1999, she has a degree in textile science from the University of California, Davis and a California Teaching Credential in textiles and sewing. Jenny is a faculty member of her local community college and successfully convinced various committees that quilting is a part of our community and a source of employment and income. Today, Ventura College offers quilt making, quilt pattern drafting and American quilt history to students for college credit as they work towards an Associate Degree. Jenny also teaches for her neighborhood school district at the Adult and Continuing Education School, is a charter member of the large local quilt association, and has orchestrated many quilt demonstrations and exhibits.

    National Quilting Day
National Quilting Day ! Whether you observe the day alone, with a few friends, or with a large group, we invite you to join with quiltmakers and quilt enthusiasts across the country for this special celebration. National Quilting Day gives us the opportunity to reflect with pride on the traditions of quiltmaking and the contributions quiltmakers have made to their families and communities for many generations. NQA began sponsoring National Quilting Day with a resolution passed by members attending the 22nd Annual Show in Lincoln, Nebraska, in June 1991. The third Saturday in March is officially designated as National Quilting Day , but quilters are flexible and we love a celebration - especially when fabric is involved - so over the years, observance of National Quilting Day has unofficially been expanded to the whole month of March!
    History
How did we get our own holiday? In 1989, the Kentucky Heritage Quilt Society organized a "Quilters' Day Out" on the third Saturday of March to celebrate the rich tradition of quiltmaking in Kentucky. In 1991, the NQA officers were so enthused with the concept and success of "Quilters' Day Out" that they voted to take it to a national level. The first National Quilting Day was observed in 1992 and since then it has grown to a global celebration for all quiltmakers and quilt lovers. Helen Storbeck, a founder of
