HISTORY OF BEER IN QUEBEC
from Salut! The Quebec Microbrewery Beer Cookbook
The first beer in Canada
The Vikings first set foot on Newfoundland about one thousand years ago. Leif Ericsson actually named the place Vinland, but surely not for the grape. These Norse sea-kings were inveterate imbibers, who never left their native Iceland without ale, which they called "aul," onboard. The Vikings would have been the first Europeans to drink beer in North America, almost six hundred years before the "lost colony" in Virginia or before the Mayflower struck rock because its captain got thirsty. The Vikings left in 1347 before they could make a lasting impression on either the history or culture of North America, never mind our beer drinking. So we jump ahead half a millennium.
The crowds gathered at the quay as the noble voyagers prepare to embark. "Where are you off to, sir?" "The Indies, perhaps China," the sailor replied. "Don't drink the water!" Water, the French knew, caused illness aboard ship and could become putrid and undrinkable. Beer, whose alcohol kills off pesky bacteria, has more staying power. But the British, French, and other Euro-peans, three and four hundred years ago, didn't know bacteria from back-gammon. Because some of the water of their own creeks, brooks, rivers, and lakes had become polluted and disease-ridden, they assumed all water was that way, not realizing that it was the boiling of water during the brewing process that did away with most impurities in their beer.

(QUEBECENSIS) Jesuits (1625), depended directly on the Holy See . The Jesuits having returned alone in 1632, the Archbishop of Rouen extended his jurisdiction over the country. According to the Bull of erection (1674), the See of Quebec comprehended all the possessions of France in North America: Newfoundland, Cape Breton, Acadia, Ile St. Jean, all New France from the Atlantic to the plains of the far West, the valley of the Mississippi and Louisiana, a territory much larger than Europe. After the treaty of Paris (1783), the Bishop of Quebec kept Newfoundland and what now forms the Dominion of Canada. That immense diocese was successively diminished by the erection of new sees until by the formation of Chicoutimi (1878) it was reduced to its present boundaries (see CATHOLICITY IN CANADA). Bishops Archbishop of Rouen, set about the organization of his diocese. His first report to the Holy See (1660) states that there were only twenty-six priests, of whom sixteen were

G ET I N T OUCH W ITH F RENCH C ANADA'S P ERSPECTIVE In 1995, Geoffrey Simpson in a column in the called the unity crisis the "world's most boring debate." Early in 1996, he retracted the statement. The perspective underlying his statement typifies English Canadian blindness to the viewpoint of French Canadians inside and outside Québec. It is paramount that Canadians who wish Canada to continue as a country come to understand the different perspectives in the unity debate. It is easy for English Canadians to muster up an arsenal of reasons why Québec should not separate. But the threat imminently looms with us still. The more difficult task is to take a look at the other side of the debate. The powers are only the end-game. What citizens concerned about Canadian unity must understand is what underlies the strategy of the separatists, for it is shared by a vast majority of French Canadians. The real challenge and one that each English Canadian must meet is for English Canadians to understand clearly the perspective of French Canadians. F ACTORS U NDERLYING T HE P ERSPECTIVE The perspective of French Canadians lies in two factors: 1) the French language and its preservation 2) the French Canadian culture and its protection A minority in Canada and North America, French Canadians have always feared assimilation. It is a natural impulse, and it flavours many aspects of their society. The perspective, and the fear, manifests itself in a view of Canadian history that is distinctly different from that which English Canadians learn.

Welcome to the Tourist Guide of quebec, Canada, The Portal, Accommodation, The St.Lawrence played a fundamental role in Canada s and quebec s history.

Saint Lawrence River Quebec City 's founding father, that imposed the name of St.Lawrence to identify the waterway that constitutes the St.Lawrence River, even though the name could already be found in traveller's tales dating back to the XVIIth century, and in many writings and maps from the mid-XVIth century.
Nevertheless, this large river has been called many names, like: France Prime, Canada River, Mayne River [...] before finally being named St.Lawrence. Some history
The St.Lawrence played a fundamental role in Canada's and Quebec's history. From the XVIIth century, the establishment of the fur trade marked a turning point in North-America's history. Contrary to fishing which is praticed from the shore line, the fur trade involved deep penetration inside the territory and its sedentary occupation. The American Indians saw their lifestyle change drastically. The French, drawn by the prospect of gains, advanced deeper and deeper into the Laurentian Valley in search of new trading grounds.
In the explorer's mind, who still dreamed of discovering the road to India west of the big river, Kebec has a bright future...In fact, it's largely due to the big river that Quebec has played many strategic roles across the centuries.
