Department of Geography 38:283 CANADA: A REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY
Dr. D. Eberts
ASSIGNMENT 2:
Comparing Canada’s Regions Using Census Data
This assignment is designed to familiarize you with ways of describing and making comparisons among the regions of Canada using readily available statistics. We will focus on growth and the characteristics of the population, specifically age/sex structure. You will compare two regions . To analyze your regions’ age/sex structures you will construct population pyramids for 2001 for the two regions you are comparing. To facilitate direct comparison, you should use percentages to construct the pyramids rather than the raw population counts provided by E-stat (so some calculations will be required - you may do these by hand or using a computer spreadsheet program, such as Microsoft Excel). One region will be the Territorial North, and the other will depend on your student number:
Last digit of student number Region or 1 British Columbia 2 or 3 Western Canada 4 or 5 Ontario 6 or 7 Quebec 8 or 9 Atlantic Canada http://estat.statcan.ca

Ask: Is North America in the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere or both? (northern) What countries make up the continent of North America? GEOGRAPHY (HUMAN)
HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES LIBRARY, 2003 - Revision - Liaison Librarian - Tatiana Bedjanian History of the Collection Traditionally there has been a conscious division in geography between the physical and human aspects of the subject. This is reflected in the collection which emphasizes the human geography of North America, western Europe and the Third World, especially the Caribbean. Membership of the Shastri Institute has resulted in a representative collection of South Asian material. In addition there has been a fairly high level of acquisition of major monographic series and key geographical journals, including many European journals of narrow regional focus which are unique within Quebec. The development of collections pertaining to South American human geography has been superficial, excepting the Caribbean area and the Library's reference resources; neither are the collections strong for Asian material, excepting South Asia. African materials are spotty except for the economic geography of the area. The methodology and history of geography and historical geography is very good. Historians and classicists share an interest in the last.

English Mr. Werner Schmidt (Kelowna—Lake Country, CPC): Madam Speaker, I was really rather surprised that the hon. member who just spoke in answer to another question said that Quebec is a “nation”. I wonder if the member could define what he means by nation. There are different ways, I suppose, in which we can define nation, but I thought Quebec was a province of Canada and I thought Canada was a federation of all the provinces working together. He also made the observation that Quebec takes nothing from the rest of Canada. I would like to ask him, then, about what has happened over the years where that cooperative element has in fact worked, where indeed the tax structure has created situations where there may have been a fiscal imbalance, and I am sure there is, but the fact still remains that Quebec was a beneficiary of certain financial agreements and arrangements that exist within Canada. Could the member explain a little more clearly exactly what he means by Quebec being a nation? Translation Mr. Réal Ménard:

SOCIAL STUDIES GRADE 4 FOCUS: ALBERTA TOPIC A ALBERTA: ITS GEOGRAPHY AND PEOPLE This study focuses on the geography of Alberta; the regions and natural resources. Throughout the unit, emphasis is placed on the interrelationships between people and their environment, as well as the impact people have on their environment. How natural resources are used and the resulting impact on Albertans and the environment are examined. Choose two natural resources; e.g., oil, water, forests, coal, land; one renewable and one non-renewable resource, for an in-depth study. The intent of the unit is to develop an increased sensitivity to the importance of using natural resources wisely. QUESTIONS AND ISSUES FOR INQUIRY Questions and issues can provide a focus for teachers to organize knowledge, skill and attitude objectives for instructional purposes. Several questions and/or issues must be addressed in each topic, using appropriate inquiry strategies. Teachers are encouraged to adapt these, and to develop other questions and issues for inquiry. Questions
How do Albertans make use of their natural resources?
