One of the clearest lakes in the world fills much of the crater. As with anything like this, every site you visit has different measurements and statistics- read carefully. Highest Tides A long-simmering feud between Arctic Quebec and the Maritimes over who has the world's highest ocean tides has been settled by federal scientists, but neither side is happy with the outcome. Authorities at the Canadian Hydrographic Service, the agency responsible for mapping domestic waterways, have declared a tie between the famous tides of the Bay of Fundy and those of Ungava Bay on the northern coast of Quebec.

Selected Bibliography
French settlers had a difficult time taming the St. Lawrence region, the heartland of Nouvelle France. Most people lived a subsistence way of life until the 1720s and fur trade was an important aspect of the economy. In 1760, Nouvelle France would however fall to the British Empire.
Introduction
French settlement in Quebec was a long and slow process.
Nouvelle France (From Champlain 1613) French settlements in New France began quite slowly. It took almost one hundred years following the exploration of the region by Jacques Cartier in 1534-41, before any serious attempts to settle the land were made. Champlain started the first settlement in 1608 with only six families. By 1663, there were 3,000 people

The Provincial Flag
The Quebec provincial flag was adopted on January 21, 1948. The flag depicts a white cross and 4 'fleurs-de-lis' on a blue background. The fleurs-de-lis had been used as the royal seal on the banners of French kings since the 1100's.
The Provincial Flower
The blue flag iris is the flower native to Quebec that most closely resembles the fleur-de-lis. It replaced the Madonna Lily as Quebec's provincial flower in 1999.

During the American Revolution, Americans under Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold failed (1775–76) to capture the city, although Arnold briefly held the Lower Town. Quebec is Canada's largest province; it is three times the size of France and seven times the size of Great Britain. The Canadian (or Laurentian) Shield underlies the northern nine tenths of the province, which is relatively unexplored and uninhabited; the region has been planed by glacial action into a pattern of rounded hills (including the Laurentian Mts.), swiftly flowing rivers, and numerous lakes and bogs. Dense forests cover much of the land, and the region is rich in minerals. South of the Canadian Shield lies the great St. Lawrence River. On both sides of the river south of Quebec city are lowlands that are the centers of agriculture, commerce, and industry.
