Throughout history, the way people worked influenced their family and social lives as well as the political systems under which they lived. The social group has been central to human survival, from prehistoric times, through the agricultural economies and into the industrial era. Being a member of an extended family or organised social group assured survival of the individual. As the industrial age progressed, the nuclear family evolved and the size of the social group declined. The evolution and development of Quebec's distinct society follows this general trend, with some deviations that could affect the political future of the region. Distinct individuals
The lives of French-Canadians in the province of Quebec have historically revolved around family, church, and community. Their history revolves around quest of a distinct group of people securing a living through demanding physical labour and dealing with extreme hardships resulting from living in a harsh and unforgiving land. The teachings of their church praised the efforts of the pioneers who endured such extreme hardships and who succeeded in making a life for themselves, their families and their fellow pioneers in this challenging environment. Their cultural values included fluency in the French language, obedience to the teachings of the Catholic faith, a large number of siblings, being part of large extended families and close-knit communities, as well as co-operation and group solidarity during times of crisis. These common values became the foundation of what today is perceived as the distinctness of Quebec's cultural heritage.

64. QUEBEC, NEW FRANCE CULTURE
Early history of quebec with a focus on the beliefs and values imported into a Canadian culture.

NEW FRANCE
QUEBEC CULTURAL ROOTS
My early European ancestors are primarily French into Quebec in 1633 (possibly earlier),
Scottish into Hudson Bay in 1789, and Scottish into Antigonish, Acadia about 1790's.
The Hudson Bay's Scottish history is included in the Metis view because
the Hudson Bay Company had little cultural impact in the Northwest until the early 1800's.
My interest in Quebec and Acadia culture drops off rapidly after 1790 when
the Garneau's make the North West their permanent home.
My focus, therefore, shifts to the Metis view of Canadian history. TRANSLATE:

67. Maine Acadian Culture (National Park Service)
Information about the French ancestors settled during the 1600s in what is now the Maritime Provinces, quebec, and Maine.
http://www.nps.gov/maac/
Fee Information
Maine Acadians share beliefs and experiences tying them to a river, the land, their families, and to their common religion, languages, and history. The land borders the St. John River, flowing between the United States and Canada, and extends away from the river to the "back settlements." Here people speak Valley French, a mixture that includes old French, Quebecois, and English terms — sometimes mixed within a sentence. Maine Acadians' French ancestors settled during the 1600s in what is now the Maritime Provinces, Quebec, and Maine. Both France and England claimed this territory. In 1755 the English government deported thousands of French neutrals from present-day Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, then known as Acadia. Spurred by the Acadians' refusal to strengthen their pledge of allegiance to the British Crown, the authorities shipped most of them to British colonies. Some fled to Quebec. Others, today's Cajuns, sought a new start in Louisiana. The majority maintained their Acadian identity. During the 1780s Acadians settled Malecite homelands in the Saint John Valley, and here they were joined by settlers from the St. Lawrence River valley. The National Park Service aids local efforts at cultural conservation in the Saint John Valley via the Maine Acadian Heritage Council, an association of historical societies, cultural clubs, towns, and museums that work together to perpetuate Maine Acadian culture.

The Museum of Work and Culture
Click on the picture to see the full color version. Located in Woonsocket's historic Market Square , The Museum of Work and Culture tells the story of French Canadian immigrants who left Quebec to come to work in the mills and factories of Woonsocket. Visitors begin their tour at a rural Quebec farm house and journey through the work day world of Woonsocket's residents from the early twentieth century to the present. On the shop floor of a textile mill, from the front porch of a three family tenement, in church, in school, in the union hall, visitors are immersed in a narrative of the working class in America. Operated by the Rhode Island Historical Society , the museum includes six walk through displays, two movies, many interactive audio presentations and hundreds of photographs. A predominate theme of the museum is the transformation immigrants undergo in "becoming American". Major exhibits include:
  • Quebec Farm House (around 1870) - Life in rural Quebec.
  • Church of the Precious Blood Living and Working to New Rhythms - a film about the transition to wage labor.

Date: Subject: question about Quebec's culture Question Hi Josee, Im a first year student at Simon Fraser University in B.C. Im currently doing a reasearch for a paper on the cultural ties/bonds that have played a role in creating Quebec as a distinctive culture area/region. Ties or bonds would include kinship, tradition, religion, language and political. The paper has to be within a specific time frame and not a general all inclusive time frame from 1600's to present. I was wondering if you could recommend any specific resources or historical events that would point me in the right direction. Thank you so very much for your time Kyle Answer Hi Kyle!
