Introduction to Quebec City
The duality of Canadian life has been called the "Twin Solitudes." One Canada, English and Calvinist in origin, is said to be staid, smug, and work-obsessed. The other, French and Catholic, is thought of as more creative, lighthearted, and inclined to see pleasure as the end purpose of labor. Or so go the stereotypes. To the west and north of downtown are Anglo commercial and residential neighborhoods, centered around Westmount. To the east and north are Francophone quartiers , notably Plateau Mont-Royal and Outremont. In between are the many dialects and skin tones of the immigrant rainbow.

http://www.wotif.com/Quebec CityHotels
Qu©bec City Hotels
Qu©bec City, the bilingual and utterly European capital of Qu©bec province, borrows some of its grandeur from a lofty cape and some from a broad river, and has a foundation that's older than that of any other city in North America (north of Mexico). The city divides between an Old Town bristling with historic ramparts, churches, narrow lanes and former battlefields, and districts revamped with museums, cafes, bars, restaurants and all the other mod-cons of international tourism. Qu©bec City is the compact capital of the sprawling geopolitical monster that is Canada's largest province, Qu©bec, which lies partly on the Atlantic seaboard in the far east of the USA's northern neighbour. Qu©bec City, located in the south of the province near the border with the US state of Maine, is pooled on top of and below the cliffs of Cape Diamond (Cap Diamant) at the confluence of the St Charles and St Lawrence rivers. In early 2002, its municipal limits were expanded a hundredfold to engulf all of the surrounding cities, including L©vis and Ste Foy, which is why some estimates of (Greater) Qu©bec City's population exceed 670,000 people. The bit of town up on the cape is called Upper Town (Haute Ville), while the bit that dribbled down to the base of the cliffs is called Lower Town (Basse Ville); both areas have old and new sections. The heart of this enigmatic provincial capital is its walled Old Town (Vieux Qu©bec), which takes up the northeastern end of Upper Town and was World Heritage-listed in 1985. The heart's main artery is Rue St Jean, clogged with bars, cafes, restaurants and drifting clots of tourists, while running along the cliff edge is a viewsome boardwalk called Terrasse Dufferin. Just north of busy Place Royal at the eastern end of Lower Town, and surrounded by the oldest network of streets in the city, is Old Port (Vieux Port) - a more apt name would be Not-So-Old Port, as the area has undergone significant redevelopment. West of the Old Town walls are the less touristy, more down-to-earth neighbourhoods of St Roch (in Lower Town) and St Jean Baptiste (in Upper Town). You'll find the long-distance bus terminal on Rue Abraham Martin in the northern section of Lower Town, while Jean Lesage International Airport is off Hwy 40 about 10km (6mi) west of town.

Introduction to Qu ébec
  • Location , Geography and Climate
Quebec [Québec] is a province in Canada, North America , bordered on the Southeast by the United States and New Brunswick, on it's Southwest by Ontario, on it's West and North by Hudson Bay, and on it's Northeast by Newfoundland. It has an area of 1 700 000 sq.km, and is three times as large as France. Population density is low, at 4.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. Northern Québec is sparsely populated with approximately 35 000 inhabitants. Approximately three fourths of Québecers live near the shores of the Saint Lawrence River.
In the south, the climate is mild. The extreme northern portion of the territory has an Arctic climate. Québec's four distinct seasons start with a mild spring followed by a hot summer which is ended by a colorful but chilly autumn. Winter brings on the freezing cold and snow.
Québec has more than 1 million lakes and waterways. The Saint Lawrence River, one of the most beautiful stretches of water in North America, crosses Québec from west to east, for 1000 km [600 miles]. It then flows into the Atlantic. Thus making both Montreal [Montréal] and Quebec City, which border the St. Lawrence, world trade ports.

During the American Revolution, Americans under Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold failed (1775–76) to capture the city, although Arnold briefly held the Lower Town. Quebec became the capital of Lower Canada in 1791. After the union (1841) of Upper and Lower Canada, it was twice the capital of the United Provinces of Canada (1851–55 and 1859–65). The Quebec Conference was held in the city in 1864. Historic old Quebec, much of which is preserved, was named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. There are many notable old structures, including the Ursuline Convent (1639); the Basilica of Notre Dame (1647); Quebec Seminary (1663); and parts of the fortifications enclosing Old Quebec. The surrounding area also has many notable sights, such as Montmorency Falls, the Žle d'Orl©ans, and the shrine of Ste Anne de Beaupr©. Laval Univ. is a center for the city's largely francophone culture.

Quebec City fashions itself the "national capital" of Quebec. Much of the business here is of the administrative and bureaucratic nature, which would normally make the city quite dull. Fortunately, the city has a remarkable history, as the fortress capital of New France since the 16th century. Although the town's day-to-day life leaves things a little yawn-y at times, the vibrant historical center makes for an incredible visit. edit

Quebec City, the capital of the province of Quebec, is located at the mouth of the St Lawrence, where it widens into the Gulf of St Lawrence. The Quebec City metropolitan area has a population of 671,000 though the city itself has 167,000 residents. Quebec City is the only fortified city in North America, and was the cradle of French civilization in North America. The port was the gateway to the interior for ocean-going ships up until the mid-19th century; primarily for exports of fur and later lumber. The city has expanded and modernized, but has chosen to maintain and restore the Old Town, both along the River and up near the Citadel (the Old City is now a UNESCO world heritage site).
The city has lots of recreational avenues for its residents. The Plains of Abraham Park and historical monument, at the site of the 1759 battle, is now one of the continent's largest urban parks, enjoyed by all. To the east of the city is the 83 metre Montmorency Falls (30 metres more than Niagara Falls) which can be seen close-up by a cable car. Residents also enjoy the annual Quebec City Winter Carnival, the celebration of winter in this northern city.
