Québec, Canada
Welcomes you
Content
Canada's largest province is unlike the rest of Canada and North America. Not only that the majority of the population is French, but the unique culture, architecture, music, food, and religion make a visit a truly experience for itself. Its modern cities and charming rural towns offer a wealth of diversity. 'Kebec' - meaning 'where the river narrows' - is an Algonkian Indian word.
Montréal, the province's largest city, where English is still widely used, is noted for its nightlife, food and museums. After Toronto, ON, Montréal is Canada's second largest city.
English and French culture is somehow mixed and results in an unique blend. It's a friendly and romantic place where couples kiss on the street and strangers talk to each other. The Montréal Museum of Fine Arts and the Notre Dame Basilica are some of the must-see if you visit Montréal. Québec City shouldn't be missed out, if you visit the province. It is the heart of French Canada, with a rich history, culture and beauty. Its European appearance and atmosphere and the charm of an old-world city make a visit to an unique experience nowhere else found in North America. The entire old section of town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don't miss the historic battlements on the Plains of Abraham, which is one of the most important historic places in French and British history.
Québec in Figures
The country's largest province covers an area of 1,540,680 sq. km and is in many ways a country for its own. It is twice the size of Texas and seven times the size of the United Kingdom. It stretches approx. 2,000 km from north to south, and 1,500 km from east to west. It extends from the fertile St. Lawrence Lowlands bordering four US states (New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine), to the vast expanse of Baffin Island and the northern boreal seas. Québec borders Ontario on the west and New Brunswick on the east.

Quebec City City Guide
QUEBEC CITY City Overview
The ‘cradle of New France’ and the bastion of French culture in North America today, Quebec City is the most charming city on the continent. Nowhere else is the past so well preserved in an ensemble of 17th- to 19th-century buildings, wrapped tight in the fortifications of the only walled city north of Mexico. A popular destination for visitors, with its horse-drawn calèches rattling down cobblestone streets between grey-stone buildings, Old Quebec also won recognition from UNESCO and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985. Located in the eastern portion of massive Canada, the city’s fortunes are largely due to its geography and history. The walled Upper Town sits atop the strategic Cap Diamant, overlooking the spot where the St Lawrence River narrows (known as the kebec to the original Algonquin inhabitants). The view from the river is dominated by the towering copper-roofed Chateau Frontenac; the wide wooden boardwalk known as Dufferin Terrace running along in front of it is often the first place visitors head to when they enter the Upper Town. At the foot of Cap Diamant and linked by a funicular, the Lower Town was the spot where Samuel de Champlain founded the city in 1608, some 73 years after Jacques Cartier was the first European to ‘discover’ the area. Today, the buildings in the Lower Town’s Place Royale have been restored to their original appearance – at a cost of around one million Canadian Dollars per house.

Quebec City Travel Guide
Quebec City Perched on top of Cap Diamant, overlooking the St. Lawrence River, Quebec City was first settled by the French in 1608, named from a native Algonquin word meaning 'where the river narrows'. Despite having been ceded to the British in 1759, the city's population of more than half a million are today 95 percent French-speaking, lending a definite 'joie de vivre' and culture to the atmosphere. About four million visitors are drawn to Quebec City each year, to savour this French charm, the famed Quebec gourmet scene, and the beauty of the historic Old City where winding cobbled streets are lined with 17th and 18th century stone houses and churches, bewitching parks, elegant squares, and numerous monuments. The city is included on Unesco's World Heritage List and is the only fortified city in the Americas, north of Mexico. Just a few kilometres from downtown this lively city presents numerous opportunities for outdoor activities and recreation, like horseback riding, canoeing, hiking and skiing.

Repertory of commemorative
monuments of Quebec city
As Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in North America, it is easy to imagine all the history that has unfolded there over the centuries. The city has also retained a European character unique in North America. So it is not surprising that it is a World Heritage Site.
A city for tourists, rich in history, where succeeding generations of great men and women worked to build a colony and then a countrywe could not talk about the history of Quebec City without knowing all these historical characters. And in a sense, that is the purpose of this collection: to get to know various historical characters important in the history of Quebec City and Canada by presenting a number of monuments commemorating Quebec City, the historical characters and events represented, and the creators and sponsors of the monuments themselves. Of course, there are so many of these men and women that it is not possible to name them all, but you will find most of them here. They will take you back in time to gain a better understanding of our origins and the foundations of our country.
This site was made possible through the co-operation of the Quebec City archives department, which provided many of the documents we used to present information available only in certain contemporary records. We hope you will experience all the rich history evoked by the existence of these monuments in the very heart of Quebec City, cradle of French America.

Quebec City offers indisputable proof that
North America has a secular history
and an ancestral culture.
Three centuries of colonial conquests, a French, English and finally Quebec regime, are at the origins of the unusual architectural aspect of Quebec City.
The juxtaposition of French, English, North-American, modern and secular constructions in the same urban scenery, gives the city a very interesting anachronic character, and is at the very least unexpected... you either like it or don't like, but you can't remain indifferent...
The capital of New France under the French regime (1608-1759), then the fortress-city of the english colony and capital of lower-Canada under the English regime (1763-1867), Quebec became the provincial capital at the time as the canadian Confederation in 1867 (creation of Canada into federated provinces).
