MATHWORLD - IN PRINT Order book from Amazon Algebra Algebraic Equations Quadratic Equation A quadratic equation is a second-order polynomial equation in a single variable with . Because it is a second-order polynomial equation , the fundamental theorem of algebra guarantees that it has two solutions. These solutions may be both real , or both complex The roots can be found by completing the square Solving for then gives This equation is known as the quadratic formula The first known solution of a quadratic equation is the one given in the Berlin papyrus from the Middle Kingdom (ca. 2160-1700 BC) in Egypt. This problem reduces to solving (Smith 1953, p. 443). The Greeks were able to solve the quadratic equation by geometric methods, and Euclid's (ca. 325-270 BC) Data contains three problems involving quadratics. In his work Arithmetica , the Greek mathematician Diophantus (ca. 210-290) solved the quadratic equation, but giving only one root, even when both roots were positive (Smith 1951, p. 134).

This article is about basic algebra in mathematics. For other uses of the term "algebra" see algebra (disambiguation)
Elementary algebra is the most basic form of algebra taught to students who are presumed to have no knowledge of mathematics beyond the basic principles of arithmetic . While in arithmetic only numbers and their arithmetical operations (such as +, −, —, ·) occur, in algebra one also uses symbols (such as a x y ) to denote numbers. This is useful because:
    • It allows the general formulation of arithmetical laws (such as a b b a for all a and b ), and thus is the first step to a systematic exploration of the properties of the real number system It allows the reference to "unknown" numbers, the formulation of equations and the study of how to solve these (for instance "find a number x such that x It allows the formulation of functional relationships (such as "if you sell x tickets, then your profit will be x dollars").
These three are the main strands of elementary algebra, which should be distinguished from abstract algebra , a much more advanced topic generally taught to college seniors.

    Number Theory:
First we must cover some aspects of number theory, That is, how numbers are defined in general and how they are manipulated. Algebra mostly concerns itself with signed real numbers. A signed real number can be represented as a point on a line stretching infinitely both ways from the zero point. A number has magnitude which is denoted by the distance of its point from zero. It also has a sign which is denoted by the direction the point lies from zero. Points to the right of zero represent positive numbers, while points to the left of zero represent negative numbers. A positive number is indicated by a + sign before the number (e. g.. +5, +4.35) or more often by the absence of a sign(5, 4.35). Negative numbers are indicated by a - sign before the number (-3, -7.8). The Number Line
Here are some things you must know about signed real numbers:
    1. Multiplying a number by -1 negates it, i. e. changes its sign:

Grades Eight Through Twelve - Mathematics Content Standards. This discipline complements and expands the mathematical content and concepts of algebra I and geometry. Students who master algebra II will gain experience with algebraic solutions of problems in various content areas, including the solution of systems of quadratic equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, the binomial theorem, and the complex number system. Students solve equations and inequalities involving absolute value.
Students solve systems of linear equations and inequalities (in two or three variables) by substitution, with graphs, or with matrices. Students are adept at operations on polynomials, including long division.
Students factor polynomials representing the difference of squares, perfect square trinomials, and the sum and difference of two cubes. Students demonstrate knowledge of how real and complex numbers are related both arithmetically and graphically. In particular, they can plot complex numbers as points in the plane.

When reorganization moves a term from one side of an equality to another, then the sing of the term must be changed. The following is a simple example of reorganization. All the equations convey the same information. Regrouping: The process of regrouping involves the gathering of term with common factors together. This process frequently involves reorganization, expansion of term and factoring of common expressions. The following is a simple example of regrouping of terms.
