INTREPRETER and RUNTIME-COMPILER First confusion to deal with: I will only cover the QB intrepreter that comes for free with older versions of DOS, is on the CD of win95, and can be obtained on the microsoft pages in a package called olddos.exe for everyone else. So let us start with a link for this olddos.exe package Also, to definitively get this compiler-thing-question to pieces, here is the link for the most QB-compatible shareware compiler on the net( called and a product of POWERBASIC) QBASIC
It is not simple to do this, you have to spawn QBASIC as a child process from your *.com file, which is not the easiest thing to do and the program still needs qbasic on disk.. Furthermore, when you can do that, you know of course already a dozen or more ways to write a standalone program with the same functionality in PB, or assembler. So in practice QBASIC is never used as creator of *.com programs, certainly not with the shareware compilers around. INCLUDING SUBS/ FUNCTIONS OF OTHER MODULES A rather serious problem with QB intrepreter that I will no longer support has to do with the impossibility to include functions from other modules in a program which you are building. Say you have developed functions for bitmanipulation and stored them together in one file, and you are developing say a program for direct screen read/write. It is possible that you discovered then that you need to read two bits of the PCinfo to determine where the screensegment is located. Now you have to first go the long way of manually copying the function from your bitoperation file to your projectfile, before you can go on. Though this might not seem lots of work, I can assure you that when lots of functions are concerned this becomes highly irritating. In fact this seems to be the reason you seldom looks at QBASIC librarys.

System Manufacturer: Homemade Comment: I'm trying to run an old Qbasic program under OS/2 on a DOS Full Screen. The program is Gorilla.bas (it came with MS DOS 5.0). On my current AMD Athelon 1200 MHz / ASUS mobo system, it runs ridiculously slow. The screen only seems to update about once every 3 to 4 seconds. Funny thing, when I was trying to run it at the same time as my Gamatech Utilities was backing up the desktop, the gorilla game seemed to speed up, but not really to a totally acceptable level. All the DOS settings were consistent on both systems. Does anybody have any similar experiences? Does the Athelon do a worse job running OS/2 than a Pentium?

What is QBasic?
Top QBasic is a DOS based programming language. It is used primarily by teaching instititions around the world to introduce students to programming languages, because of its simplicity. However it is a slow language, without some of the powerful functions available in languages such as C, which is why it is not used for profit today. Despite me saying this, there are a few programmers out there that still use QBasic where they think it is required for business purposes. Here are the comments made by one such person very recently: I think that Windows and Internet were the direct cause of QB becoming obsolete. But, there are a lot of small business that need to do some processing that can't afford all the bells and whistles that are offered today. Examples:

If you only want to use the SXBLITZ-protocol on a SXKEY (rev-E or -F, thus with encryption ) to READ and PROGRAM a SX28-chip, the recipe is very simple:
  • Create a program with SXKEY28L.exe and fill a with "Program" (your prototype)
  • Start the QBASIC-program
  • In the DOS-directory you will find now the files:
    • READ_KEY.TXT (with the content of the in readable form) You can rename that file and use this name for programming -chips in the field.
    • DISDEBM.TXT (disassembled content of ). (Also the still "unknown" DEBUG-codes)
  • Program a new
  • You can write your own VERIFY-command in QBASIC if you like.
If you like to use the DEBUG-facility:
  • Fill the -chip with the DEBUG-command in SXKEY28L.exe and QUIT

Advice on running QBasic programs
If you do not have QBasic available, but you do have PKware's PKZIP available, then you can download, unzip and run the ZIP versions of each program. It is possible to streamline the operation of PKZIP, as described here.
Advice on running ZIP programs in unzip-and-go mode
If you have Microsoft QuickBasic 4.5 or Visual Basic for DOS, then you can install it as an interpreter like QBasic. Look at the instructions for QBasic above to see how to do this. Alternatively, you can install the batch compiler (BC.EXE) so that the BAS program is compiled and then run. You might want to do this if you are short on memory, or if you want a better version of the relativistic flight simulator.

This is the quantum mechanics measurement problem looked at from the point of view of computer simulation. This website contains a variety of QBasic programs which you can download and run. We must warn you at once that an exponential-time algorithm may be the best we can do, and this means that you are possibly looking at an esoteric subject.
You can find un-esoteric polynomial-time QBasic programs on other topics, such as relativity, gravity, the Van Allen Belt, the Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability and the Von Karman vortex street. The relativistic flight simulator can be run in interpreted QBasic with QBasic installed as a viewer, or better still, in compiled object code with PKZIP installed in unzip-and-go mode.
There is an experimental prediction which you may read about before looking at the rest of this website, which otherwise may be heavy going.

I have a number of qbasic programs I developed to use in my hobbies and lo and behold, I can't print to my usb port. The programs run okay. I should think this is a problem that has been solved many times but I haven't run acrossed the answer. Perhaps print-to-file then open and print the file with notepad or something. Any ideas?

We are testing whether umlauts and other features will download and run properly. All these programs are merely a short working test program. Please download them and let me know if they worked .     Learn German via Free Software
    This page Describes Original Software to Tutor you in German This site is designed to help everyone learn German. Harold Eddleman has written software to help himself learn German and other subjects. He is making most of those programs available free to the public. Some of the programs are special for a particular page. For example: ger230e.bas goes with lesson ger230e.htm Such programs are listed at the top of the specific lesson page and also on this page. Others are more general or tutor sentences or phrases. The programs are written in QBASIC which was a part of DOS 5.0 and later DOS. Most of them run on the Original IBM PC and many were written on that machine. Kids can now buy those computers for $5 to $25 complete with disk drives and monitor (try a dealer or computer/ham fest). See my Computer Science site for ideas on using these old machines. While many of my programs run under Dos 3.3, I suggest you install DOS 5.0 on such machines. All the educational material of each program is in DATA statements at the bottom of the program. I suggest you add your own statements, or remove all my DATA statements and enter your own for studying biology, French, Business Law, etc. I also suggest you modify the main program to learn programming or meet your special needs.

For some reason (which is still not understandable) her community college is teaching Qbasic as a Introduction to Programming. Geez. Why don't you just teach her Assembly if you're at it. Qbasic is very antiquated, and I don't even see one or two single programs that is written in Qbasic that are still in existance today. You, of course, are welcome to correct me, and badger me with comparsion of Visual Basic (which I have no clue as to what it is). I am from a school of old time BASIC... 10 print "Spam! Spam! Spam! Assume that each gallon of paint covers 250 square feet and the cost is $20.00 a gallon. Your program should assign the dimensions of a room to variables and then display these values along with the cost of the paint and gallons needed. For example:
