Introduces the basics of the language to get you started.
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bay/5707/qbasic.html
This tutorial is also available in .TXT format TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION
In the early days of programming, it was usually the scientific elite doing the programming and they were usually trained above and beyond the average American to do their programming work. It was not until 1964 at Dartsmouth college that the Beginner' s All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code would be introduced more commonly known as BASIC. Using common English to perform processor tasks, BASIC became quickly popular, although it was disliked by programmers of more "low-level" languages such as assem bly and FORTRAN. In 1985 Microsoft released their own version of BASIC called QBasic with their MS-DOS 5.0 operating system. Since then, nearly every PC user owns their own copy of QBasic, making it a widely known language. QBasic is a very simple language to pick up, and yet it can accomplish a great deal. Granted you will probably never write Doom or Word Perfect with QBasic, but it has it's strong points. One of them is to introduce people to programming without having to worry about the internal workings of the computer. It's simple to create games, business applications, simple databases, and graphics. The best aspect of the language is it's close resemblance to English. This small tutorial introduces the simple concepts of programming to get you started, so if you already know another language or are already familiar with programming, you may want to skim through the first couple sections. Good luck!

Simple QBASIC to BASIC Stamp II Serial Communication
Home This page can be found at: http://www.pacifier.com/~mcginty For this application, I needed to send the numerals "0" through "999" to a laptop computer. Here is a solution for zero software cost (QBASIC and a shareware compiler called FIRSTBAS) and very low hardware cost (a serial cable and various pins and wire from my junk box). Requirements: QBASIC is a hidden little gem that Microsoft long ago would have killed if it had caught on in popularity. It is included with DOS, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 (If its not on your hard drive it is on you WIN95 CD). FIRSTBAS is the first one I tried of several shareware compilers out there, and it seems to work pretty well. The shareware version has a 30 day license and it seems the cut and paste editing has been disabled. The only caveat for first time users is that the default compile location is to memory. Change this to an EXE file and your MYNAME.BAS will be written to disk as MYNAME.EXE The BASIC Stamp II (http://www.parallaxinc.com) microcontroller can handle RS232 serial communications up to 9600 bps. This application uses the carrier board (available seperately) that has a female DB9 connector that can be used for both programming the Stamp itself and testing your QBASIC program, with an important Caveat I'll get to a little later.

All the computer programs are created with MS qbasic, a programming language Download a qbasic program to test your joystick with Download portest.bas
http://www.hilaroad.com/camp/projects/compeng1.html
Hila Research Centre Computer Engineering The Joystick Port as an Experimental Input This is the first in a series of pages supporting Hila's Computer Engineering program. We define computer engineering as a technology combining electronics with computers and programming. To attempt these activities on your own you will need some knowledge of electronics and an older computer. We recommend that you do not attempt these activities on your brand new multi-media, 200 Mhz, do everything machine - because it is possible to damage your computer! If you have a 286 or 386 sitting around, use it. These computers are very capable of doing everything in this program. Read waiver at bottom. Most "IBM-compatible" computers come equipped with a joystick port. Sound cards that are installed on many new computers have a joystick port. With a basic understanding of electronics and computer programming it is possible to use this port to time races, measure temperature, detect burglars or monitor anything that can be detected electronically. If your computer does not have a joystick port, inexpensive plug in cards are available at computer stores. You do not need a new, powerful computer to create the projects in this program. A 286 type computer is quite adequate. All the computer programs are created with MS QBASIC, a programming language that comes with most versions of DOS. If you are using WINDOWS 95, look under /Other/Oldmsdos on the Windows 95 CD, you will find Qbasic there.
