Almighty Allah has honored and blessed the Muslim Nation by entrusting to them the noble mission of His chosen prophets and messengers; the responsibility of inviting people to Islam. Allah said in His Book of Wisdom: “Say: This is my way; I invite to Allah with sure knowledge, I and whosoever follows me. May Allah be glorified and exalted, for I am not among the idolworshippers.” (12: 108) Furthermore, because it is the most dignified goal for any Muslim to embark on, Allah elevated those who undertake it saying: “Who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah, does righteous deeds and says that he is a Muslim?” On the other hand, the Prophet (pbuh) indicated that the abandonment of inviting people to Allah ( da‘wah ) will lead ultimately to the destruction of the Muslim Nation. Archaeologists have found some of the earliest sites in offshore islands like Merwah and Ghagha. Remains of small fishing communities have been found at the Ajman, Sharjah, Umm al Qaiwain, Jazirat Al Hamra and Islands of Dalma. Settlements in Jumeirah explains trading activity during period prior to Islamic era. With unmatched expertise in maritime activities people of emirates traveled to different parts of the world. According to Portugese writer Duart Barbarosa the people of Julfar were persons of worth, great navigators and traders. Portuguese navigators took tips from UAE navigators like Ahmed bin Majid regarding trade routes and winds of Indian ocean. Voyages of Vasco De Gama around the cape of Good hope in1498 spurred Gulf’s importance in the world trade. Rivalries in the Western World also reflected on the trade scene. When Europeans struggled for supremacy a new power grew almost unnoticed in emirates, the state of Qawasim or Qassimis whose descendants still rule the the emirate of sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah.

ISALC : ESL 382: Computer Applications - Spring 1998 Culture Capsules: People, Places, and Processes Doha Nasser Hi everybody!! I'm Nasser Al-Khalaf. I'm from Qatar in the Middle East. I was born in Doha. Doha is the capital of Qatar. It's a very nice city and has an old history. Also , anybody can see her history through the old houses that are still standing or through the museum of Qatar . People in Doha used to have a very difficult life; the young and the old people had to go away from their family to the sea for four months at least , searching for pearls and catching fish , but now after they found oil in Qatar , nobody does this hard work, only some people do it as their hobby. Doha has started to develop beautiful sights. One of the beautiful places in Doha is the seaside, which is called "The Cornish." Many people like to walk on the "Cornish" with the trees, flowers and the green grass on your left and the smooth blue sea, with a clear blue sky on your right. In front of the "Cornish" there are two palaces, the big old one, and the new palace of the President, which is shining there all night long. This palace is where the President, "Hammed bin khalifa Al Thani" lives with his son

BACKGROUND
Qatar is a progressive and beautiful nation in the Arabian Gulf. There is a very large expatriate community in Qatar and the Qatari government and its people take every opportunity to make them feel at home. Qatar allows the different communities the right to open their own schools, cater to their communal taste in cuisine and fashion, and celebrate their national festivals, while also welcoming them to participate in Qatari culture. As a result, Qatar has a vibrant, peaceful and friendly multi-cultural community that provides the ideal setting for the whole family. Qatar offers everyone the chance to live, learn, work and socialize with people from cultures they might never have otherwise known.

Qatar and Pittsburgh: a transformational enterprise
Now, more than ever, is the time to build links in the Middle East, say Jared L. Cohon and Charles Thorpe, explaining why Carnegie Mellon University has opened a campus in Qatar
Sunday, September 12, 2004 Carnegie Mellon University has taken the unprecedented step of opening a true branch campus in the Middle East, in the country of Qatar. Jared L. Cohon is president of Carnegie Mellon University. Charles Thorpe is dean of Carnegie Mellon's campus in Qatar. This initiative catches some of our friends by surprise. The media reports coming from the region focus on the trouble spots: chaos in Iraq, violence in Saudi Arabia, travel warnings in Bahrain, and conflicts in Israel. It is easy to forget that there are other parts of the Middle East that are stable, safe, forward-looking and eager to bring peace and progress to the region. We are especially fortunate to be partnering with Qatar. We welcomed our first undergraduate class of 44 students, mainly from Qatar and surrounding Arab nations, on Aug. 29 and look forward to their graduation in the spring of 2008. The class is a mix of business (53 percent) and computer science students (47 percent) 73 percent of the total population of students is female. In Qatar, cultural bridges are being built and the exchange of goods and ideas, the natural pursuit of all people, takes place on a regular basis.

Print Article Send Your Feedback One of the richest countries in the world in its per capita income, Qatar, a tiny Gulf emirate has been developing at an astonishing rate, thanks to its gas and oil reserves. Once an extremely poor and deserted territory, it is now a modern, developing state that is considered one of the more liberal Arab countries. Qatar is also home for the famous Arab news network Aljazeera and also to the US army's central command for the Middle East. Geography Qatar is on the Arab peninsula, bordering the Gulf and Saudi Arabia with Bahrain lying at its western shores. It has a land size of 11,437 sq km. Historical background Traces of Stone Age habitation dating back 50,000 years have been found in Qatar, as have those of the Babylonians and the Seleucids who passed through later in the first millennium BCE. By the mid seventh century the new religion of Islam had expanded throughout the Arabian Peninsula. Subsequently, Qatar has come under the dominion of Islamic dynasties such as the Umayyads, Abbasids, but also many centuries later, the Portuguese and the Iranians.
